ShootingOutside - The selection is actually of the sky, not the windmill. One way you can tell is by the fact that the "marching ants" display is shown along the edge of the image itself. But if you had the opposite selection of what you wanted, you could always choose Select > Inverse from the menu...
You say that you have created only a selection of the sky, yet it appears that you have created a selection of the windmill. How then did you create the selection of the sky? Explaining that would be helpful.
