The problem with air source heat pump noise is that they can emit sub bass frequencies (around 20 - 100 Hz.) The pump doesnt send out much in the mid range (as with human speech) which is why your voice is louder than the pump in this clip. I've just installed a heat pump and the bass frequencies that are travelling up through the frame of the building are a major problem. I'm looking into getting the pump re-positioned as far away from the house as possible, around 20 metres. Fingers crossed!
@gibbzthegreat I decided against positioning the pump further away as it would decrease the effieciency of the unit. I'm still having problems with the low frequences travelling through my timerframed house but have slightly changed the angle which has improved the acoustics. My house is a new build and we should've taken more consideration to the placement of the pump i.e away from the bedroom areas of the house.
@gibbzthegreat Hi, are your neighbours planning on putting one near your property? If so as long as it is at least a few meters away from the actual building it shouldn't pose too much of a problem. Remember that in the summer the pump will hardly be functioning so won't be a problem with sound travelling through open windows etc. Your fence should actually help to reflect soundwaves away from your property slightly too

Shame they don't mention that air source heat pumps do not have permitted development rights so require planning permission. The consulation document, which seeks to add ASHP's to the list of technologies with permitted development rights, has thrown up two significant hurdles for residential applications - noise and visual impact. Not that anybody at ICS would care about this!
