Well, the other have already pointed out what that "thing" in the jar is so I'll tell you the rest. The picture could be a Mass Effect reference of the head of a volus. And the crystal could be a fragment from the original one which was salvaged. These are just guesses. Remember, I did cay could.
oo the "thing" in the jar is a combine cremator head. they run around with flamethrowers schorching the bodies of rebels. though you never see one, you do see the charred corpses throughout the game.

that alien thing is a head of a crimator (cut combine from original hl2) , and the other is a xen crystal

The Head in the Jar is a combine Cremator and was cut out the game. It's in raising the bar
