I lived in Austin though, the most liberal place you can find in that vast ocean of republicans, though I have still met my fair share of homophobic twats there. Most are open and accepting, and fond of the cross dressing hobo who runs for mayor every year.

Two things to keep in mind: (1) at some point, a number of gay marriage-related cases will reach the Supreme Court. If they issue a ruling that has impact at the federal government level, it won't much matter how backward any individual state is. The same thing happened with civil rights cases: eventually, things became a matter of federal policy. (2) The surveys on gay marriage show a generational divide. Younger people are far more supportive. Eventually, the will be the majority in the U.S.

I think it is beyond cruel and unusual punishment to make "Gays" pay the same taxes,and follow the same rules, and yet deny them the BASIC rights of being able to love whom they wish.
