  • I remember having this on cassette when I was a kid. Maybe about 3-4... I'm still only 22 now :)

  • I just picked up this single by Eddie Moses, The Tunettes, The Toppers with instrumental accompaniment by The Band-Its - I wonder when this was released? Any clues?

    Thanks for sharing.

  • huggin and a kissin with fred

  • awesome memories:)

  • I loved loved this song when I was little.....

  • Written by Bob Hilliard, who has been dead for 40 years, and Lee Pockriss, who passed away on November 14, aged 87. He had also written "Johnny Angel" for Shelley Fabares and "Itsy Witsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" for Brian Hyland. I hope he's got a few bikini-clad angels in his back seat now!

  • awesoe!!! hey, one of those girls looks like Lucille Ball. cute, love it. thanks.

  • yes you all wanna be fred but you aint iam freddie a prince, and the girls just cant get enough of me...fred

  • "Wish that I could be like Fred."

    Doesn't everybody?

  • OMG my mother used to sing this way back in the 1960's lol...

  • theres only 6 little girls anf fred :D

  • theres only 6 little girls anf fred :D

  • I wonder what the censorship rules were back then. I know they were a lot stricter about smutty content, but evidently this got by them, despite its overtones.

  • That missing 7th puppet is why "Fred" has such a smile on his face...just sayin'...lol

  • @Johnk662561 khahahaha, I get it!

  • is this spam? I gave you people time :D <3

And im playing this to FRED :D

  • "I said why dont one of you come up and sit beside me and this is what the 7 girls said" :P

  • Back again :D

  • haha, Im putting this on everytime i visit youtube, its so catchy :D

  • @Maffy234

    Glad you liked!

  • Who doesnt think this is creepy?

  • 7 little girls, lying in my trunk...

  • There's only 6 girls in the backseat

  • I remember this one. I was a little kid in the sixties when this was popular. My father's name was Fred so he took a lot of teasing from everyone about this song. It was on the radio quite frequently back then.

  • As I remember it- there were only three girls who actually recorded the song. They appeared with Perry Como doing this song on his show in the Fall of 1959

  • @ishky94

Pretty good memory! But I actually did have the single. I recorded the tune as Paul Evans and the Curls. The Curls, Sue Singleton and Sue Terry, were part of the great TV choral, the Ray Charles Singers (No, no, not THAT Ray Charles).

The Avons covered the song in England and had a hit with it there.

I hope that stirred the memory cells. :-)

    Paul Evans

  • @cd1mp3 Ha ha Paul, you sure got 'em there ! At age 73 your "sense of humor" cells are still sparklin'.

  • Kissin' and Huggin' with Fred? I don't remember this....

  • Those dolls are creepy!

  • @mattanddi62 the whole thing is creepy!!!

  • OMG i am soooo old

  • gotta make my mind up which seat can i take

  • hmm 7 girls but only 6 are seen and "fred" had a strangly happy look

  • theres only six girls

  • looks like michael buble

  • Not quite the Doors version but.........

  • kickin' in the front seat, sittin' in the back seat

  • I always thought that puppets were scary....or do I just think that now? I loved this

record when I was a kid - which feels like it was back in 1843 - but life surely was

    simple then.

  • Thanks for posting this. Has bought back some very happy memorys of when i was young playing vinyls at my grandparents house. :)

  • @snosslehop How old Am I? :-)

  • I'm not sure I want to know what the seventh girl puppet (the one you can't see) is doing during this video.

  • @alamanderflash Good catch.

  • AWESOME THANK YOU :)

  • @nightgrooveruk Thanks for the comment, Paul

  • The version by the Avons is much better

  • @tim60s321

    I humbly disagree. :-)

    Paul Evans

  • @cd1mp3 Having listened to both versions again I concede they are equally good-this US version is more lilting and slower -The Avons version submitted by RomanceAndReflection is faster and snappier-it got to no 3 in UK in 59 and its the one I grew up with which probably explains why in my opinion it slightly better

  • i used to make a cone out of the paper - and put a pin through it , and used the pencil in the middle of the record to make it go round, and use the cone like an old style record player :)

  • wow. thx for the upload. this was one of my faves growing up

  • @MrDjc1970

    Glad you enjoyed!

    Evans

  • man brings back memories of when i was a boy , playing this on a pencil and a rolled up piece of parer with apin in it lol

  • @mjvceramics

I can't picture how you played "Seven Little Girls" with a pencil, paper and a pin - but glad you enjoyed it,

  • Thanks for your note. Glad you enjoyed the post.

  • WOW.... I'd forgotten all about this song... The first time I heard it, there was about 8 of us in a car meant for 4...lol... Its a wonder ANY of us lived long enough to grow up... (physically, at least..as some NEVER do any other way) Thanks for the memory!

  • OK, so my teen days were in the latter 1970s but I still remember getting my first car..and a night taking out 5 girls, one of which became my girlfriend (for a while anyway) back in 1978. Heard this song on Sirius 50s and does it jar memories. From a child of the 1970s...great song Paul. Sincerely, Hank.

  • @hanktank77

Thanks for the note. Well, 7 is better than 5 - but -LUCKY YOU! :-)

  • @hanktank77

Well, 7 is better than 5 - but still; Lucky You!

  • Hanktank,

Well, 7 IS better than 5 - but still - LUCKY YOU!

    Paul

  • one of the dolls has a lazy eye....lmao

  • @bajanmicey BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • The person singing - and "driving" is Paul Evans. He wrote several songs in the 50's & 60's, such as "When" , a hit for the Kalin Twins in 1958, and "Roses Are Red", a 1962 hit for Bobby Vinton. This song on the video he performed himself , and was a hit in 1959.

  • this is creepy! i have to sing this song randomly in music class!

  • So this is how Barbie & Ken got their start on the road to fame?

Another one to add to the sing-a-long on the retirement village bus?

    Thank you for sharing.

  • @msfyn LOL

  • @byrdsmaniac actually the one in the front {oops in the back seat} looks like Lucille Ball.

  • who's the guy called who sings?

  • hee hee :)

  • I'm sure Sheriff John Bunnell wouldn't be impressed if he pulled over a car with 8 people in the back seat lol

  • Six puppets, well I don't think they expected people to watch this 50 years later, especially from a 35 year old like myself who happens to be a fan early rock/doo wop :)

  • @bauble24

It took a fan to point out that there were just 6 puppets in"The Back Seat" to me. :-)

    Thanks for the note.

  • @bauble24 There's actually 7 puppets, only 6 girls, though.

  • So good...my first 45...wow!

  • @em8trix

Whoops. Giving your age away. Whoops. Giving MY age away.

    Paul

  • @cd1mp3 Hell, I'd love to give my age away... :)

  • @cd1mp3 you can't imagine the joy my mom and I shared when I found this song you posted this was so awsome to hear this after almost 30 years thank you again ;^)

  • HOLY CRAP!!! cd1mp3 I'm 37 years old and this is oneof my moms fav songs, see I heard this song when I was about 7or 8 years old when my mom had 100's of 45 records around the house, well as the years went on we lost all the records and I it's been almost 28 years since we heard this song, I have bee searching for this song fo over 20 of those years, and almost gave up untill I stumbled upon it here on youtube, ty so much for posting this, my mom almost crapped her pants when I played it for her

  • Had a different version of this on a "Wacky Winners" cover compilation, didn't think anything about it at the time but this was a very strange song for a young child to listen to.

  • I love this song. When I was young, my cousins and I sang this at

a birthday party for my grandpa, using chairs for the back seat and

driver's seat. We used some kind of wheel for the steering wheel.

Later, I sang to my own kids.

  • for u phil

  • one of the dolls is a dude

  • @jradetzky that is Fred

  • my best friends mother who used to babysit me used to listen to this song all the time. she died of lukemia a couple years ago. she was such a fun person, i cant even begin to try and express how great she was, i miss her. thanks for uploading this! it really brought back some great memories. :)

  • Wonderful! Thanks for posting this great trip down memory lane.

  • "Sitting In The Backseat" made my boyfriend very jealous (he's my husband now). In 1960, I was in the front seat, riding around with my boyfriend; my best friend & his best buddy were in the back seat. "Sitting In The Back Seat" came on the radio, and I climbed over the seat to the back. My friend & I took turns hugging & kissing "Fred" (actually, his name was John)... just friendly kisses, but boy, did my boyfriend get angry. He married me anyway. A great memory to go with a fun song. ♫♥♫

  • ahhh, days before seatbelts and bucket seats. The good old days.

  • love it, classic ,cute and sweet

  • @ollydarlo I agree!

  • ha ha. i remember my mom playing this for us. but there's only 6 girls here and fred. one of them has a goofy eye. LOL

  • Thanks - I thought I was the only one who remembered this song!

  • This is creepy. What show is this from?

  • friends gettin some

  • very cute.

The puppet in the middle front has one of her eyes closed in the first minute but, it is open later on so, the puppeteer must have opened it while, there was a close up to the singer..

  • Kinky back-seat group sex FTW.

  • Ahhh, i love it. I was singing it in the car today, none of my friends new what song i was on about. Lol.

All together now, one, two, three

Keep your mind on your driving

Keep your hands on the wheel

Keep your snoopy eyes on the road ahead

We're having fun, sitting in the backseat

Kissing and a hugging with Fred. Hahaha!

  • someone should kick fred in the nuts, lol i heard this on a k-tel compilation album as well but it was called '10 Nutty Numbers'

  • happy days........when drugs weren't easily accessible, when you could walk home without getting stabbed and when immigration wasn't a problem. Shame I'm 25 and wasn't born in this era. Good song

  • i love this song we had to sing this at school yesterday lol so i know all the lyrics

  • Wow. I actually heard this on the radio today when scanning up and down the dial! Paul, your voice to me sounds very much like Paul Petersen of "She Can't Find Her Keys" fame.

  • Always wished I could be like Fred also, but it never happened ! Anyway I love this tune, I grew up with this music ! Thanks..

  • That's so creepy and goofy at the same time *-*

  • the best song

  • ma granda always plays aht song ;L aye love iht =]

  • Im 45 and GOD I miss really clean music you can just listen to and have with knowing how innocent things were back then.Sucks to grow old. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

  • clean music? sounds more like an orgy to me... seven girl kissing and "hugging" with fred...

  • Man I love this song and I'm 18,

never saw the 50 year-old music video though XD

  • I used to listen to this when I was a kid. It was on that K-tel "Goofy Greats" album back in the 70's and my parents were shocked to hear me listening to it because they said it was their "necking" song when they were teenagers.

  • I am happy to hear that I contributed to your mother and father's relationship - and your arrival on the planet.

    :-)

    P.Evans

  • Yes . Thank you Mr. Evans. Without you, I may not have existed.

  • covered in the uk by the Avons

  • My older Brother and Sister bought the 45

in the early 60's that had all of them , Alley Oop,

Itsy Bitsy Bikini, One eyed purple, Seven Little Girls, Beep Beep and the rest, guess it must of been a big seller because we had it. Great memories for a little kid.

  • This song was recently used in the movie "Summer Palace" which is about two young Chinese university students who fall in love during the time of the Tianamen Square protests. When they first meet, they dance to this song.

  • A gem from my very early childhood. I used to sing this to my cat named Fred. Love this so much! Thank you for posting it. <3

  • Hi,

Thanks for your good words - and also to Fred the cat.

Glad my video (Seven Little Girls) helped stir up good memories. If you're interested, I've got a career video on my site that might further stir the memory pot - and a video for the Christmas season. Happy Holidays.

    michael

  • In the 1986 movie version of this song, William Hurt played the role of Fred.

  • xanadu1795, i live next door to one of them, and at her 50th wedding anniversary they all went round there and sung.

  • My Nan used to sing this to me when I was little!! Such a great car song!!

  • OMG I forgot this song existed. I had a version of it on tape about 5 years ago mind you i was only 12 at the time.

    Great memories, great song.

  • There is so seven girls...you just cant see one ;) Lucky Fred

  • lol

  • We had an album with this song on it when I was a kid. Too cute! Thanks for posting. Sure brings back memories.

  • This is awesome!

  • My dad had this on a record called Dumb Ditties which I was obsessed with when I was little and I liked this song.

Never knew this footage existed. I love it : )

  • Lol 0:29-0:32 his driving is so...lol!

  • dick has dies in 1974 , 1988 and 1999 and was replaced with a doll. no0one noticed , ratings soard and even his wife only realised when he seemed to move more than usual.lol.

  • i love this video, so funny, i have the avons version but i do like this version. I WONDER WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DOLLS AND FRED ARE THEY STILL IN EXISTENCE CAN ANYONE TELL ME

  • My dad had this on tape with when I was little, I used to "dance" to it when I was a toddler :)

  • I don't suppose anyone knows the chords to this do they? :) being able to play it would be fun.

  • One of the great songs of all time, and how nice to see footage like this. Animation technology has come a long way hasn't it?

Is it my old eyes, or are there only 6 "dolls" back there with the Dick Clark look alike? Check out at :35, 1:28 and the closeup at 1:50 to count. I don't think much was going to happen as the girls look like they are dressed for church!

And if the seat belt laws we have today existed then, Paul Evans would have been pulled over, and they all would have gone to jail.

  • Heavenly Hash! I DISTINCTLY saw this when it was on The Dick Clark Show.

Anyone who remembers 'Flavor-Ific'.....RAISE YOUR HAND.

    Here's wishing you a HAPPY HALLOWE'EN.

DON'T FORGET TO VOTE ON NOVEMBER 4.

  • This is so silly! I especially like the silent but ever-smiling Fred doll.

  • CYOOOTE!!!!

  • He also wrote my favorite Elvis song "next step is love" One of the puppets is the Dick Clark Doll" I never noticed that before. I remember Dick Clark Saturday night show. The guy in the back seat was Bobby Rydell before he was famous.

  • This song is way older than I am. It is still one of my favorites. Love the oldies. You can't go wrong.

  • The puppet in the back seat looks like Dick Clark

  • I think so, too

  • Awesome !

  • GREAT! I had never seen any live footage of Paul Evans. This goes to my favorites and *****!

  • I just loved this song way back when. I haven't heard this in such a long time. Thanks so much for posting this. It is very special to me.

  • This is one of the most endearing songs of the 1950's rock era - and Paul Evans has the perfect

voice to make it a classic.

I wish he had had more hits, but he was a good songwriter (Remember - "Roses are Red" by Bobby Vinton.
