I saw Virgil with Vai I think on one of the first G-3 tours, man the guy is absolutely awesome.Very musical!Dream Theater held auditions for a new drummer with the departure of Portney and Virgil was one, of only seven, to audition for the incredable prog band. They were only looking for the very best and Virgil was on the list for sure.
Where can we find talents like that these days! Real good music, can't believe they were so young. See how spontaneous they were on stage shredding their guitars away.
Does anyone know if there are any old Cutters video footage out there ? Live or Clips? ~ cmon Phil dig some out and upload em for us - :) must have some from the ol studio in Ringwood days ?
Man - I never knew Phil Buckle wa a shredder! That was awesome! He's must have been one seriously together dude to let his ego take a backseat so that Jack could take all the leasd workk. I always incorrectly assumed that Jack must have been the better lead player - Phil is obviously every bit as good - maybe better
Oh man I used to go to see Phil play at the Grainstore in Melbourne every week. Great player and better than most people know. Always just on the edge and often over!!
It used to frustrate me the way he stopped playing when Jack joined. I love Jack's playing but I missed the out of control stuff.
@Raytamar dude, Phil is great but he don't hold a candle to Jacks playing and hence, he was shut up on that side to let Jack shine. But anyway, best Oz band in a long long time. Now on the Electric Mary bandwagon.... more Jack tearin up Les Pauls and the like. LOL
@TheSook45 ~ you have no idea what youre saying until you can say you saw him playing live week in week out around melbourne ~ Jacks great, but lacks the soul Phil wrenched out of his guitars
@weedoman1971 ~ Phil was playing in a band called the Cutters in Melbourne before they became the Sons ~ nearly every song featured his playing which was awesome ~ I never understood why he stepped aside for Jack ~ Phil still to this day is one of the best players Ive ever seen live
It's simple anyone that knows what they're talking about re guitar players will say he moved aside coz he had nothin on Jacks playing.....any GOOD guitarist will tell you this. I have seen Phil play and he didn't NOT do any solo's with Sons, some of MTV basement songs he shredded in solo's........ doesn't make him a great player. In saying that, if Phil does it for you, then that's great, everyone will do something for someone more so than another player. Otherwise there's only ever be one.
I was at the recording for this at channel 9 studios in Richmond. Was a HUGE Southern Sons Fan! I won tickets on Triple MMM to go & see the MTV Basement tapes. It was Southern Sons & Baby Animals, Awesome Night!!
damn this is great-this is a new find for me also-heard of Virgil Donati here in the states with Soul Sirkus-but this here band was a monster-wonder why they were'nt bigger worldwide ?...
@tonfan Australia doesn't realise or is so naive, blind, deaf or plainly hooked up by these bogan footy/sport stars that they have some of the best musicians in the world right on their door step! Virgil Donati is flooring people overseas yet apart from musicians no one knows or cares about their own (Virgil Donati) doing amazing things overseas.
I think they are all great.love the style & energy.jack jones and southern sons are new to me.Ive been a tommy emmanuel fan for a while and saw tommy and jack do Imagine.I loved it.Thanks! Tommy. Jack. southern sons & my new hero youtube!for bring in all this right in to my home.
@rorysdick I have seen Jack and Tommy live together doing a whole show, it was awesome. You can see Tommy and Jack doing another song on my video's if you like. "Nothin to lose" Tommy is a freak and together..... game over. Haha
Ulrich, this is where Virgil started off, it pretty much launched him. Both he and the singer/guitarist (Jack) are awesome. Check Jack out playing guitar in the Hans Valen gigs with Viorgil, was about 17y/o or something. FREAK.

haha Virgil plays witht he weirdest people ...let's get THE BEST drummer we can summon up in here to play some 4/4 snare drum on two and four , bass drum on 1 and 3 rock beats! XD he should have taken over the band! at least the dudes shred...

I think they tried to get to the us in the mid 90's but for some reason they broke apart. Then Virgil choosed to leave Oz on hes own.
