This honestly has to be one of the worst songs I've ever heard. And I'm not judging that based on genre preference but on song & lyric quality. I understand it was the '80s but so many other bands in that time were able to produce timeless, unforgettable songs. This is just, disappointing.
unfortunately they didn't get much airplay in the US...except for "If you leave" but only because that came from the movie "Pretty in Pink" and maybe "forever live and die" The only way I really heard them was because they opened for Thompson Twins (or was it Howard Jones?)
FYI, OMD roots: Founders Andy McCluskey (from Meols) and Paul Humphreys (from Meols) met at primary school in Meols, Wirral, Merseyside, in the early 1960s, and in the mid-1970s, as teenagers, they were involved in different local groups.
Like "lukeweatherlike" I wasn't even born when they released this. I discovered OMD when I was about 12 and that how my love to "synth Britannia" started. It still lasts :)
I thought it was '83, i've just checked the 7" single and in the UK it was released by 'Virgin records' in '84. But like you said it doesn't matter, timeless music, great memories.
I'm 21 years old. I wasn't born when this came out. I just picked up some old cassettes my dad made back in his college days, and found this song on one of them. Instantly looked up the lyrics to learn who performed it. AMAZING!
@lukesweatherlight There's nothing f*cked up about anything when it comes to taste in music. You like what you like. I loooOOOooove OMD and Iron Maiden.
I enjouy this song it also reminds me of my brother's train set. A Also my brother likes trains and stations I htink I shold recomend this song to him so whenever he visits stations etc he will problably remember this song.
Does anyone else know what is going on? I hit 16 and -boom- OMD disappeared! Where is the fun in the Spleen? Or the Liver? No mention of the rain-drops that stomped all over my Lollipop - which is worse than it sounds in about 1985 I think? Someone who doesn't know 'Locomotion' and 'Enola Gay' told me to go away the other day - not a good sign - they should tune-in to my Gerbil's sack more often. Don't knock the 80s - correct me, daddy.
i love OMD.....haven't seen them live but have seen Duran Duran live 3 times now in the last 5 years and wow what a huge concert it was with around 54,000 watching them in Sydney AND YES they were awesome the crowd loved em.
I seen OMD live. The band members all wore black pants and white dress shirts and ties. It was remembrance of watching Kraftwerk in concert, but a little more lively.Great show!!!
They have reunited for a major tour and a new album after 17 years...have a look at their official website or the new Souvenir DVD which shows them rehearsing for the new dates.

@SaveUsMavis I think the steel drums and the sax gives the tune a carribean feel. They should have had a video to suit.

Their music went so "popish" after this song.
Doteatsurpants 2 years ago
but not so popish as pop artists today.
peterhopqk 2 years ago
@Doteatsurpants There were a lot of songs/artists back in the 80's who you can give the lable of "pop" music.
OMD for one thing is after this song little bit more poppy but not too much.

This is a great track by a great band. But have to say that most of 80's pop was meaningless pretentious crap!
RobDeManc 3 years ago
Please learn what the word "pretentious" means before you use it...
pashedmotatos 3 years ago
It means to claim great merit or importance. And that summs up the attitude of the 80's very nicely!
