Now, I love Gretz and Mario,, but Roy, to be fair, was at a disadvantage here, LOL....however, make it a clutch playoff absolute must-win game situation...think about it: who better to put in nets to stop either of those guys? Roy's gotta be your first pick or at the very least, close to the top of that list. These 3 were the absolute cream of the crop at their game. 3 of the very best, legendary HOF'ers.
There were still great goalies back then, Grant Fuhr, Roy, Belfour, Richter, Vernon, and of course Hasek. Ken Dryden was probably one of the best overall goalie in the past century and he only wore skinny pads and skater paddings. It got easier for goalies when they got heavier and thicker paddings going into the 1990's, the game was still steady paced with the 2-line pass rule and players like Wayne, Mario, Jagr, Bure and Yzerman dominated until New Jersey adapted the trap defense.
@sookster54 dryden is the most overrated goalie. the dude was huge and he played for the habs back when they were ridiculously good. look at 72 series. dryden got crushed.
@ULTRAINFINITEJUSTICE Dryden's size was part of what made him great. In '72, Dryden and the entire team got crushed in game 1. Other than that, Dryden let in 5 in game 4's 5-3 loss, and then won in games 6 and 8 (the latter two being must-win games of the highest pressure possible). The Habs in '71 were huge underdogs. Yes the Habs were great in their 4 dynasty years (and in '73 also). But everyone acknowledged then that part of their greatness was having a great goalie.
@torontario1 back in the day it was easy to score, are you fucking me? goalies now have advanced gear and they didnt as much and those goalies back then would still shit down these "new goalies" throats. old hockey is the shit
@jeffhardy009wwe hockey back in the day was great but it still doesn't justify how easy it was to score...hybrid butterfly styles were not introduced and goalies weren't nearly as athletic as these days
@torontario1 because now a days, the qualifications to get into sports is more advanced, u gotta train everyday and if u sprain one part of your body its a problem. back then u didnt have to be fit and extremely athletic you just needed to be good. now a days u gotta be good overall in everything, thats why these players have to train more often then back then. but if we had those players from back then doings the stuff we do now...
@jeffhardy009wwe funny tim thomas couldnt make the nhl back then and is now the best goalie, dwayne roloson couldnt keep a steady job in the nineties and is playing fine now at 42, khabibulin pushin 40 was the best goalie in the early part of the season.
Roy,Brodeur and Hasek all in their prime at the same time in the nineties goaltending is inferior today actually. Luogno considered one of the best routinely lit up...
@wovokanarchy The onlt reasion Canada didn't win at Nagano was Hasek, he is the reason why the Czech won. Hasek allowed six goals in total, with only two of them coming in the medal round. Gretzky even called him the best player in the game after the Olympics. Crawford couldn't do anything to prevent that. Canada had one of the two goals scored in 6 games...
Would love to see how many goals Mario posted in his career vs Roy. I know Gretzky scored 5, and assisted on countless others. Nice to see the best vs the best here.
That wasnt fair
