How does the Pyr do with water? I live in Newfoundland and the dogs are always dipping in the ocean, which is probably why we bred them to be swimmers :)
I don't know about all Pyr, but mine hates water :) He hates to get dirty, he hates rain, he hates to swim. Pyr are opposite to Newfie's. Pyr loves only snow.
could great pyrenees sleep outside in this kind of weather if they have a dog house? i live in the mountains and i have a german shepherd who guards inside the house and i want a dog to guard the yard and it gets really cold in the mountains these dogs look like they have more fur and would be ok outside all the time
Maybe it looks diffrent, but in this herd Pyr is dominant dog, and Newfie is under him. Pyr just allowing to play with him. If it would be to much for Pyr he will just shows his teeth. They are friends, and those are normal dogs relations. Have You ever seen dogs playin?
mine to thors 121 lbs and nine months old hes the bigest lap dog around here but dont just walk in the house if your not me haha man he go crazy if someone comes nere the house we have to of them him and his sis
when my4 month old grandson comes over, my Pyr cannot settle down until she inspects the baby. She has to smell him and give him kisses and she lays down by him to protect him. I guess that is in the Pyr nature to protect. My grandchild is so safe with my Pry around.
I'm stuck between deciding on getting a Newfie or a Great Pyrenees! Love Newfs but don't think I can stand their drooling and heard that Great Pyrenees are more of a serious dog than a playful one like a Newfie. Which would you recommend seeing as you have both?
@SwiftRyder2 - I remember my Pyr as a puppie and no toes were safe. LOL Pyrs can be playful but when it is time to protect, they will. They really are gentle giants. I would think a Newfie would be similar. Both seem to be great choices for a family dog.
@SwiftRyder2 Pyrs can drool too, but not a lot. Newfies will be bigger than a Pyr if that makes a difference in your decision. What a tough choice for you to make.
@SwiftRyder2 If you live near water get a Newfie. A Newfie without water to swim is tough on dog. We had Newfie/Shep mix. If I did not experience his love, smarts and devotion I would think it was not true. He was runt of 17 pups. He had Newfie paws, tail, demeaner. Seem him dive 15 feet deep in water. We live near school. He would break up fights always siding with kid getting bullied. Ultimate baby sitter. The list goes on.......

Why not teach that Newf some manners-obviously bugging the Pyr-the Pyr is NOt as dominant a player as that newf is-shame on you.

Love it when the Newfie pulls the Pyr by the tail. Pretty tolerant Pry. Mine is pretty protective of her tail.
