  • Yes indeedy, feed tha needy... Tell All Of the Mighty Dinosaur!!!JR!!

  • The weird thing about living in boston is that everyone and their brother seems to know 1. Aerosmith and 2. J mascis, but somehow i doubt no. 2

  • Is that Dropped D tuning with major thumb action!??!

  • J used an alternate tuning in this one thats surprising.

  • The best part start at 2:21. tettettenewnewnew....

  • Mind Field Tee!

  • Sooooooo goooooooood

  • Even when he's soloing his balls off, it doesn't look like J Mascis' heart rate goes past 15 beats per minute.

  • 2:20 to 2:32, best part of any Dinosaur Jr song, so fucking powerful, god these guys are great

  • I LIKED this video , and I LIKED it hard! I hope he never stops rocking. To me he's right up there with the ZZ Top guys. Different style of rock, but both rock hard into their late years.

  • i love how j's guitar and murfs drums match!

  • when people ask, "what happened to your face?'" I show them this video

  • Honestly. the man flat out is --howyousay-- THE MAN. doi.

    UPUPUPUPUP!

  • HOLY FUCK!!!

    J just melted my face!!!

    1:58 - 2:22

  • Hard to believe ole J has broken the tradition of an artist writing an album later in life that competes well with until now would say "his prime"....Go J, you will always be my favorite guitarist who brings a manipulation of sound that brings emotion to your style.....

  • I've seen them live twice, and both times i paid more for the train ticket than i did for the dinosaur jr ticket. they're so underrated it hurts

  • listen to this song when ur really sleepy, its interesting, it dosnt jolt you awake more just clears your mind and makes u pass out at your computer, it makes me sad when it ends and i wake up, i wish it wouldn't stop.

  • to the 12 people that 'thumbed down' this video:

    you suck.

go watch lady gaga or some bullshit.

    this is REAL FOOKIN ROCK!!!

  • Jowea, I would like to thank you for this upload and I was wondering where you got this awesome footage. Also to anyone dissin' J he may not be the best vocalist alive but it's about the message he's talking about anyways, look at his guitar skills he makes it seem like nothing but it sounds awesome. Also he's rocking on his own fender model which is another sign of awesomeness, and they'll continue to be awesome. MAY DINO JR BE WITH YOU.

  • @13KeY37 Hey there, there were three videos on pitchfork media a few months before Farm came out, they don't seem to be there anymore which is a shame because there was a pretty good interview on there which i didn't bother to download, I did get them playing Tarpit though. If you come across the interview please let me know!

  • @Jowea if you google "dinosaur jr pitchfork in studio" a little way down the page there will be a result from clicker.com that has it

  • @Jowea the video is up on pitchfork's facebook page.

  • this song is the tits

  • fucking GENIUS

  • J is a god how dare any of you talk shit about him.

  • this is amazingly immense!!

  • what albums does murph do with the lemon heads?

  • like that driving guitar riff at the intro and between the verses

  • 3:20 . THAT is how you start a guitar solo!!!

  • @jessesetsfire that whole solo is just unbelievable. and j makes it look so easy.

  • Going to see them this Thursday in Glasgow, loved them since 1992 and if it's anything like their gig in Edinburgh a few years back I'm not expecting to be able to hear much for a few days after. Fantastic band.

  • @CheRevolution76 Was Murph drumming in Glasgow? I was at the Liverpool show and they had a replacement drummer in.

  • Joe Mascis es una maldita macana con todo y venas en la guitarra....

  • Farm is a fucking CLASSIC. I can't even begin to explain how much this band means to me..

  • @aselfishimpulse

I am new to Dinosaur jr, but I have loved it ever since. I had the chance to see them live at the Troubadour for free and that was one of the best shows I have seen. These guys have grown on me so much, that the music and band mean so much to me now. Just wanted to share this with you.

  • best song off farm, top 5 of all time. Great to see them get a kickass song after playing for so long. Good hope for the future too!

  • got tix to see them 8th may!

  • Now THIS is music! A three piece with fenders, there is nothing better!

  • @JeromeKillsFascists fender is the absolute leader, there is no other brand that makes so hot instruments, don't you think?

  • Comment removed

  • well asonjaryg a better band would beat a 3 piece band. but true, not much can beat this one :D

  • This is so authentic. I love it. Nothing beats an awesome 3 piece band.

  • this song puts me into such a nirvana

  • Oh, their songs have a tendency to do that.

  • these guys are so amazing. this is music with talent and passion. much better than all the bullshit mainstream we hear today.

  • i think its their best song

  • the best music gear...fender fender and fender...great sound this jazzmaster and this precision 51

  • YES. YES YES. FENDER. FENDER. FENDER.

  • @Thebowlshitawards yes man, but lou uses some strange NO FENDER pick ups, oh lou lou, whatz are you doing there lou? :D

  • this is awesome...such a beautiful sound..x

  • J's Jazzmaster is great!

  • GREAT!!!! GREAT!!!!

  • this song is hypnotic, every time i listen to it i'm just gone

  • you are so right

  • one of the best grunge bands ever, and they're not even from seattle!

  • @ih8japscraps Grunge isnt how I would word that, sir.

  • @D0oD0oBrain thats your opinion and you're entitled to it, sir

  • What a guitarist !!! I love this rock band. I love this LP.

  • I love this song, maybe my favorite song by this band. I have a Fender Jaguar, I love the guitar.

  • maybe u need a fender with humbucker and a good distortion pedal and a marshall amp

  • Or, you know, a fender with p-90's.

  • Anybody got ideas on how to emulate his guitar tone? Gear etc?

  • Gear:

    ElectroHarmonix Big Muff Fuzz

    Fender Jazzmaster/Telecaster/Les Paul Jr

Marshall Plexi Amps (though here he is using a Fender Reverb of some sort--any cranked Fender/Vox/Marshall will get you close)

    Technique:

Rhythm: Open chords and open string hammer on/pull offs

Lead: G major (Em) and C major (Am) scales, focusing on the majVII-->I and III-->IV intervals

Sick, perversely awesome vibrato to add at all times.

  • It's a lot more than a big muff. He's got a vintage rams head one on his latest pedalboard, but he's also got a superfuzz, a frazz dazzler & some other strange fuzz pedal i'm not sure of (and a fuzz factory from time to time). When i saw em he had a hiwatt amp and a JCM2000 along with the plexi too.

  • Well, yeah, J uses alot more, but for the average joe, especially this one, a Big Muff is gonna have to do it, and it accounts for most of the classic Dino Jr tones. Heck, I don't even use a Muff...my Rat is close enough for my ears.

  • I don't know i was pretty dissapointed when i got a big muff, the tone control is literally usable in like one position. any different & it's either too fizzy or way too bassy. wouldn't really advise buying a standard usa one. the russian one is a better bet

  • Big thanks!

  • check out a youtube dude called sreymind ... he gets a passable mascis sound with a jazzmaster and a sansamp and no effects

  • Thanks, I`ll do. Currently saving up for a Jazz =)

  • who doesnt like dinosaur jr?

  • Deaf people.

  • @HarrySackthatsme many people... fortunately I'm not one of those I love dinosaur xD

  • @HarrySackthatsme 12 dumbass people. I think they thought the thumbsdown button was a 'Love" button or somethin.

  • Is he playin a Jaguar?

  • @SICKSxNINE He has a signature model Jazzmaster..Beautiful guitar, sounds great. I'm not one for artist signature guitars usually, but damn, I love that one.

  • @chuckmastazero nice, thanks dude!

  • I think i heard this on some college station the other day, awesome song.

  • I discovered these guys from reading about Kurt Cobains influences. without knowing it I had already seen this exact video on HBO I believe. They showed it in between movies or something. I thought to myself "this guy doesnt look like he knows how to rip on the guitar, but he sure does."

  • Happy birthday J!

  • I could listen to J's solos all day long. Genius...

  • where's the interview where lou says that murph was stressed out/having anxiety over duplicating the drums to sound like the way j wants them?

  • i think it was J being a bit dry, 'drummer' joke basically

  • I think I read that on Wikipedia. J was a drummer before Dinosaur Jr, and only later on learned to play guitar. During the second album "You're living all over me" J had the drums in his mind and demanded Murph to play exactly as he wanted.

Murph drummed on the first 3 albums, by the time the 4th was released (Green Mind) J was doing the drums on almost all of the tracks himself.

If they said it recently, it must have been a joke, because arguments over drums was what made murph leave in 1993

  • Check out a band called Witch, stoner rock band J plays drums for ;)

  • @girlie347 , J started as drummer in hardcore punk band Deep Wound -> watch?v=cWWUajHw9sc

Murph is a monster drummer BTW

  • what for an amp does J play ?

  • to record I think he uses a Fender Tweed and a Berklee Super Champ, which is like a Vox Ac-15 but made in America. Live he uses giant marshall stacks :)

He has lots of other amps though, Hi Watt, Orange etc

  • Man, why can't J be my neighbor? I'd knock on his door and tell him to turn it up.

  • @JasonOliverGoodman lol i've did that to a roofer next dour listening to the raidio

  • @JasonOliverGoodman

    It would be awesome!

  • I love when it hits 3:27.

    They just absolutely kill it.

  • agreed!

  • i'm really digging these instrumentals

though i'm not into the vocals as much

just a random question--anyone know if they recorded in different locations or just different rooms in a building?

  • It was all recorded in J's house

  • different rooms. same house.

  • The fact that Blink 182 is even mentioned on this comment thread is a slap in the face to DJ. I grew up with blink 182, and just discovered this band a couple of years ago. Blink is not even close to the quality of this band in terms of musicianship and songwriting ability......or quality for that matter. BTW, Blink 182 is not punk. They are crap.

  • Thank god. Someone with common sense.

  • Saw DJ four days ago. Absurdly loud, but perfect with ear plugs firmly in. I noticed that even the hip college kids down in front had neon ear plugs. Did not expect to see that.

Thing is, if you want to enjoy the music for a long time, better protect the ol' ear drums. Once you lose hearing, you don't get it back.

Yes, Mascis played extraordinarily well. The vocals were turned down to inaudible levels and Mascis only said 4 words all night: "Vocals down, guitar up."

  • The volume is a bit of a problem, after I saw them support jesus and mary chain i could not hear my car engine start and kept turning the key. But I have tried earplugs and I couldnt hear the treble, I suppose its down to quality of earplugs. Isnt this version better than the album version which goes on too long and ends as if they too are bored with it.? I think so.

  • Treble suffers a bit with ear plugs, but yes, you can get good ear plugs that do a better job. The drummer had some good ear plugs in while he was playing.

If you go to a lot of concerts, that would be a good investment. I had cheap ones and was willing to deal with the diminished treble. My buddy's ears are still ringing from the DJ show and he is really worried. We love music and the treble will suffer ALL THE TIME if we don't care for our ears.

    Take care and be well.

  • I imagine they all have ear plugs altho its probably quieter where they are behind the pa. Mind you J's amps must be still blowing his ears off

  • I heard them few weeks ago. they played this song as the ender during which i almost passed out out of orgasm during that long guitar fucking solo. pure trance

  • Well be fair, we all grow old. They are all in their 40s now I believe. And I don't think anyone ever said they were a punk band even 20 years ago. Post grunge maybe, but labels are futile.

  • i didn't know they were that old. plus, green day and the offspring are in their 40's, they still look pretty young, its not as much of a label as it is how my brain works. i think of things and make images to associate them with through prior knowledge. i keep the made up image until i find a replacement. thats what i meant, no harm done

  • Yeh but Green Day die their hair! Have a look at JMascis on you tube from a few years back, he's as thin as a stick. Hard to grow old gracefully, you'll see.

  • @guitarbass95, it's still a stupid remark. Dinosaur Jr. were never energetic jumpy pop punks, they always were lazy unfashionable slackers. They're the same they always were. Green Day and Offspring are fake posers.

  • "Post grunge maybe, but labels are futile." - They came before grunge! Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Pixies, Husker Du were the originals; Nirvana etc. came 3-5 years after.

  • dino didnt really make any impact til nirvana made that style of sound more mainstream by watering it down. . Id not call husker du or pixies or sonic youth grunge, they were much better than that.

  • @sunbeam11, I wouldn't call any of them grunge, but what became known as grunge took their inspiration from those bands. Dinosaur Jr. made an impact on me in 1985 with Repulsion. And then again with Little Fury Things ('87) and Freakscene in ('88). Nirvana's debut came out in '89.

  • Yeh Dino came first before they were even Jr, but nirvana made the sales, then after they broke thru, dino jr started to make some headway, dino jr are post grunge for me in that nirvana popularised the term. Not i hasten to add, that I ever liked nirvana

  • You are such a douche

  • yep,

  • Your gonna be 60 one day.

  • yea, i just hope im as cool as that guy. skateboarding and in a punk band? thats fucken awsome!

  • yeh but he's sticking it to the man who cares if he's 50 or 100!

  • J mascis had like 6 records out before you were born (95) haha...you probably consider blink 182 punk...

  • you're right about the age but blink 182 is more pop. i really only like their joke songs like "i want to f**k a dog in the a**" i like the ramones and early green day (not the new emo crap)

  • SO GOUDA!

  • sounds like neil young

  • YEEEAH YOURE RIGHT!

  • numbskull - i saw them two yrs ago for the first time. conservatory in okla city. i should have bought the earplugs. the speaker started smoking (seriously though) and my ears rang for three days! it was awesome

  • Excellent !!!

  • Comment removed

  • Gotta love that guitar. I saw their show last night and it was everything I hoped it would be. I might have permanent hearing damage though, shoulda bought those earplugs I guess. 8-)

  • trouble with earplugs, as I've found through trying them at dino/fog/mascis gigs over the last 10 years, is that they knock out all the treble and make the sound woolly. Unless they are the fancy sort people use for shotgun shooting, but they cost a lot.

  • just saw them in concert last night. this song closed the main set with a signature J Mascis kickass solo.

  • Still the greatest Band in the world...

  • word

  • oh yes

  • amazing the perfect mix of vinyl and new age

  • the note Mascis hits at 3:28 is what pure awesome is made of

  • Actually it's the only cliched part of the song, but it impresses the kids obviously. J normally avoids the obvious.

  • Awesome! Good to know they are on tour.

  • Old guys gettin it done. I can say that, 'm one too.

  • wow!!dude thats some decent guitar

  • They are so pure

  • Bass lines are so undistinct on Dinosaur songs. Really need to strain your ears to hear it at all.

  • @roreyhoeg77, that's because a lot of times he doesn't do lines, but plays chords, that righteous noise bottom. And every now and then he plays high notes. A lot of what he does merges with what J does. I've been paying more attention recently with all these videos and the new record. Lou Barlow is essential to the Dinosaur Jr. sound. Glad he's back.

Check out Repulsion for a clearer and classic example of Lou's role.

  • it's true. still overall, i like their mix, as heavy as it may be on guitar

  • It's true these days but not on older albums like Bug or You're living all over me.

  • i have his signature guitar....it's awesome to see him playing it lol

  • I'm gone going not hearing this on the radio

  • what are the headphones used for??

  • so you can here what u r playing

  • To not go deaf from a drummer 2 feet away and J's loud amp set-up.

  • yeah!! nice song!!
