I have made shots from half court, 3/4 court, even opposite end of the court from the baseline. For the life of me, i have never, never, ever been able to duplicate sean's motion from coming across the lane, receiving the pass that near the sideline, take a dribble to settle myself while keeping from falling out of bounds, and keep both heels off the sideline, elevating and making that shot. And all those attempts were with no one on me and no playoff, team, arena, or city pressure on my back!!!
How is it that when espn, tnt, or nbatv goes over their lists for greatest shots in league history, sean's final three is either way near the bottom of the list, or not on the list at all?! If that was number 23 (either mj or lbj), number 8/24 (kobe), or number 33 (larry legend), that shot would be ranked 1, 2, or 3 all-time. But because its ONLY a san antonio player (not high enough tv ratings, apparently), that memorial day miracle shot never receives the credit it deserves.
If this was Marv Albert, it'll be like this: "Here's Elliot for the lead...YES!! The Spurs lead by one with 9 seconds left, timeout Portland!! What a shot by Sean Elliot as the Spurs get their first lead ever of the game!!"
I'm from SA, and I was living in Portland during this series. I watched this game at a sports bar in Portland, and I caught a LOT of sh!t after this shot, but this shot was the clincher for the Spurs championship!!!!! HELL YEAHHH!!!!!
I'm not even a Spurs fan,but this is one of the greatest moments in NBA history. What a shot by Elliot. One of those moments that I can say I'll never forget where I was when I saw Elliot hit this shot.
Hearing those 50,000 fans chant Go Spurs Go and then go out of their minds touches my spurs loving soul and nearly brings tears to my eyes. I mean seriously that amount of people going insane all at once for our guys was the hands down most amazing Spurs moment I've witnessed in person. God I miss that Dome!
@ryankxlu I agree, those were the good days when all the real fans would sit it in the lower level. Now the lower level of the AT&T center is filled with corporate snobs that treat the game like a social event. The Alamodome was the loudest arena in the league.
Two of the biggest 3 pointers in Spurs history have been made over Rasheed Wallace.
This one and Robert Horry's 3 pointer in Game 5 of the 2005 Finals against the Pistons. and Rasheed was a great defender, it just happened to be against him.
I remember where I was at when this happened. I was in my brothers room using his VCR to switch in between the game and a porno. I would switch it over to the game when I thought I heard my mom coming down the hall. Turns out I switched it over at the right moment and I happened to catch this great shot. Man, the summer of 99, what a great time...
greater moment than LJ's 4 point play? I always thought that was an interesting debate, which one of these was better? And also interesting that both finalists, the Spurs and Knicks had a comeback win spearheaded by a miracle three pointer in the conference finals that defined their entire playoff run. Even the fact that both teams needed one last nerve-wracking stop after the miracle shot is mirrored. I do think tho that Elliot's shot was harder than LJ's albeit more ill-advised as well.
Man o man I will never forget this game! Not only did all of San Antonio blow up in an uproar but all of Texas watching it did I knew people out of state going crazy over this win, 1999 spurs was a true dynasty.
But this is 2011 so let's hear it for our boys now!!! Another dynasty!!!
My favorite sports moment ever, a shot that could have gone wrong in so many ways went all right. I think the Trailblazers were so shocked that they could not recover. There will never be another team like our 1999 Spurs.
I was working at the MadHatter in Windsor Park Mall when I was listening to this game. I Was surprised when the Tre' fell. Then again if you recall Sean was knocking them down all 4th quarter so it was going to to happen. Not a Spurs fan, but the game was memorable.
I will always cherish this moment in Spurs history. This was Game 2. If Portland wins, series tied 1-1 going back to Portland. This killed the Blazers' hope and catapulted the Spurs to an easy Finals win over the surprise Knicks for the first title. Greatest moment ever....and on Memorial Day....I will surely remember this one!
Sean Elliott showed so much heart during this playoff run. Nobody, except his close friend and teammate Steve Kerr knew about him needing a kidney transplant. He knew his body was failing him but yet kept playing because he wanted to help the Spurs win their 1st championship. Sean gave his body, heart, and soul for that championship. I am so glad the Spurs retired his #32, he truly deserves to be the last person to wear that number for San Antonio. He is such a class act!
5 Blazers fans must of saw this video. Elliot was just a great player, took that one dribble to avoid the travel and to gather himself. The NINJA boiiiiii!
San Antonio has so much class, we've never let things get out of control. We just enjoy and appreciate our awesome team everytime. Poor Sean and he was already ill. God bless him.
That had to be the loudest place in the world at that shot lol the Alamo Dome held so many people i would have a headache after every game i went too lol GO SPURS GO!
I was there and went to every playoff home game that year ... I stood in line fir 8 hours for tickets to the finals! What a year! And what a GREAT city that knows how to celebrate their CHAMPIONS peacefully!!!!
I cleared my eyes and looked next to me at my friend Mark and we were both balling like babies. Everyone in the Dome that night was crying. We all knew that our time was finally here and the Spurs would take it all this year. The amount of elation is inexplicable to anyone who hadn't been through the heartache of all the previous seasons. I have never cried at any other sporting event. It wasn't just the game, the moment, the shot, it was finally our time. Thank you for everything Sean.
I WAS THERE THAT NIGHT. I was there every night...year after year of heartache. Still we returned hopeful. This night appeared as though the spurs would blow it again. Trailing the entire game, with only nine seconds left, Sean Elliot, who we later find out is severely sick and desperately needing a kidney transplant, not only hits the near impossible shot, but pushes back at the tide, and gives the spurs the momentum to redeem themselves forever.MONSTROUS ROAR and not a dry eye in the building

I played basketball in highschool in Tucson, Sean Elliott went to Cholla High school, the court is named after him and signed. We blew them out of their gym every game we played there.
@davd1986 The Blazers are the worst choke artists in the history of sports. You should see some of the big games they blew in the early 90s.
In 1990 they had a 10 point lead against the Pistons in game 1 with 3 minutes remaining and lost. They had a 7 point lead in game 5 with 2 minutes remaining and lost.
In 1992, they had a 15 point lead against the Bulls to start the 4th quarter of game 6 and lost.
And those are just the ones I'm most familiar with.
This was a football stadium but everyone and there grandma could go and cheap too.. Not like the at$t center(sux). Aaahhh memories, it was when I was most happiest!!!!!!
@flacov i here you. there is nothing like seeing a clutch 3 or seeing Robinson posterize someone in the Alamodome. hearing 70,000+ cheering with you. it just sends goosebumps thru you because you couldnt even hear yourself, but in the noise bleeds you really got a noise bleed. lol. but yea like what $5-$10 bucks a person to see the game. back then a Spurs game could be a last minute thing to do like a movie is today. now its like $20-$25 bucks a person & like $4-$8 for a drink thats mostly ice.
Wow, can't believe this was over 10 years ago. I remember watching this whole entire game in my family room. I was 14 at the time. Those were tha days.
@lilrp76 They got a new arena now, this place sucked. It's a football stadium (even though san antonio doesn't have an NFL team), so they cut it in half with that big blue curtain and put like 20 rows of bleachers on that side. HUGE waste of money for san antonio was the alamodome.
@fatsomamacheese its because we had a football team for like 1 season in the NFL in what the 80's(lol the san antonio gunslingers) then i think the owner went bankrupt or something and we were stuck with a huge football stadium. at least they made it usefull till the Spurs got there own place.
@SAtownZ28 I lived in san antonio my whole life until 2002, they did not build the alamodome in the 80s, they built it for the spurs and arena football in the 90s (the texans or something like that), and it's like 20 thousand seats short of hosting a superbowl. Gigantic waste of money for the people of san antonio.
@fatsomamacheese i think it was late 80's when they started planning to build the alamodome. we had a Pro football team for like 1 or 2 seasons. they were gonna plan on using it for both sports but the owner of gunslingers went bankrupt. thats why its has so many seats. if was only going to be for the spurs then it would have been the size of the at&t center. i wouldnt say the alamodome is a complete waste. it holds records NBA Finals and it brings stuff like monter jam and motocross to the city
@SAtownZ28 They never had an NFL team, it was arena football or something. My problem with it was they made it like 10 thousand seats short of hosting a superbowl...wtf!
@fatsomamacheese there was gonna be a NFL team but the guy only had millions and not the Billions required. in there first season he went bankrupt. arena football fields are like half the size of what the alamodome floor. i just wish that the saints would have stayed in san antonio. i went to one of the games when they were n town. spent like 2 hours tailgating then i went to the game.
Sheed has seen two threes said over him now against the Spurs that lost a series lol, he has to hate them... First this and then his missed rotation on Horry in 05.
Man, I remember that game like it was yesterday. Remember, they played that game in the Alamo Dome.... with live 41,000 fans.... Can you imagine how loud it was in there... WOW. And as he's running away after the shot he's point to Mario Ellie saying "I told you... I told you!!!" Mario later stated that Sean had told him that he still had one more 3 in him. Awesome!
Also, it's amazing how Robinson and Duncan utterly dominated every Spurs opposition team that year in the playoffs. Swept the Lakers and Blazers like they were dog shit, and it was only the 8th seeded Knicks who finally won 1 game against the Spurs, and without Patrick Ewing and Larry Johnson.
@wannathrowdown11 I ran around the room to the bathroom and remember it all, I just ran all over like a nut when it hit lol! I remember it all and where I watched it from and what I did!
porland never won in the western conference finals in 1999 and 2000 they were killed bay sean elliot there in the video 1999 wahhaha and 2000 BRYANT TO SHAQ!
i think this is a forgotten shot. its one of the best plays ever, and it came in the playoffs. the fact that he stands on his toes to not go out of bounds shows awareness out of this world. nobody else would do that in such a moment in the game when all you can think about is making the shot
...My ass. Michael Jordan, Magic, Bird etc...please. Great play though but don't make it seem like it was Magic playing all 5 positions or Jordan dropping 55.
umm i never said anything like that. my first sentence even specified that i am talking about this SHOT. i didnt say elliot had a legendary game. i just said it is a great play and a great shot. i am not stupid enough to say sean elliot is as great as jordan lol. i duno where you got that from
i will NEVER EVER EVER EVER forget this game!!! i was there!!! behind the goal!!!!!!!!!! one of the most memorable days of my life!!! and hey whaddya know, it happened on MEMORIAL DAY!!!!!!!! go spurs!! im ready for the season!!!
Thats because the NBA game was much better back then. Also, 1999 for being a lockout yr produced one of the best Playoffs ever. Alan Houston gamewinner in Miami, LJs 4-pt play, this shot for ELliot, Avery Johnson clinching the NBA Title for the SPurs. Great playoffs.
I love my SPURS! Great ambassadors for the city San Antonio, nothing but a class-act and these guys never have embarrassed San Antonio or the Game!

Here's the formula - more dead soldiers (tools) = more profits for the corporate interests investing in war!!
So all you tools just keep firing those bullets and missiles. Uncle Sam will be happy to send your family and friends
a hugely inflated bill for the costs! And they can pay for the funeral when your dead ass comes home in a casket!
FYI- No matter what they tell ya-the US has no plans to end the war-NONE! They're counting on a lot more of you

great shot. Bad move by the defender. Why would you even risk on stealing the ball when you are up by two points with 12 secs remaining? D:

The most amazing part is that his kidney was deteriorating during the playoffs. You can tell during the interview he's in pain.

Crazy Trail Blazers! Choking away back to back Conference Finals, freakin lame. Credit the Spurs, but man oh golly!
davd1986 1 year ago
@davd1986 The Blazers are the worst choke artists in the history of sports. You should see some of the big games they blew in the early 90s.
In 1990 they had a 10 point lead against the Pistons in game 1 with 3 minutes remaining and lost. They had a 7 point lead in game 5 with 2 minutes remaining and lost.
In 1992, they had a 15 point lead against the Bulls to start the 4th quarter of game 6 and lost.
And those are just the ones I'm most familiar with.

LOL at Elliott, they were easy shots for me! Well that last one was a 10 outta 10 0n difficulty! WOW what a miracle shot on Memorial day.

This was a football stadium but everyone and there grandma could go and cheap too.. Not like the at$t center(sux). Aaahhh memories, it was when I was most happiest!!!!!!
flacov 1 year ago
@flacov i here you. there is nothing like seeing a clutch 3 or seeing Robinson posterize someone in the Alamodome. hearing 70,000+ cheering with you. it just sends goosebumps thru you because you couldnt even hear yourself, but in the noise bleeds you really got a noise bleed. lol. but yea like what $5-$10 bucks a person to see the game. back then a Spurs game could be a last minute thing to do like a movie is today. now its like $20-$25 bucks a person & like $4-$8 for a drink thats mostly ice.

What's the max occupancy for a Spurs game at this place?
lilrp76 1 year ago
@lilrp76 This was played in the Alamodome, San Antonio's football stadium. The attendance for this game was somewhere between 35,000 and 40,000
patient451 1 year ago
@lilrp76 They got a new arena now, this place sucked. It's a football stadium (even though san antonio doesn't have an NFL team), so they cut it in half with that big blue curtain and put like 20 rows of bleachers on that side. HUGE waste of money for san antonio was the alamodome.
fatsomamacheese 1 year ago
@fatsomamacheese its because we had a football team for like 1 season in the NFL in what the 80's(lol the san antonio gunslingers) then i think the owner went bankrupt or something and we were stuck with a huge football stadium. at least they made it usefull till the Spurs got there own place.
SAtownZ28 1 year ago
@SAtownZ28 I lived in san antonio my whole life until 2002, they did not build the alamodome in the 80s, they built it for the spurs and arena football in the 90s (the texans or something like that), and it's like 20 thousand seats short of hosting a superbowl. Gigantic waste of money for the people of san antonio.
fatsomamacheese 1 year ago
@fatsomamacheese i think it was late 80's when they started planning to build the alamodome. we had a Pro football team for like 1 or 2 seasons. they were gonna plan on using it for both sports but the owner of gunslingers went bankrupt. thats why its has so many seats. if was only going to be for the spurs then it would have been the size of the at&t center. i wouldnt say the alamodome is a complete waste. it holds records NBA Finals and it brings stuff like monter jam and motocross to the city
SAtownZ28 1 year ago
@SAtownZ28 They never had an NFL team, it was arena football or something. My problem with it was they made it like 10 thousand seats short of hosting a superbowl...wtf!
fatsomamacheese 1 year ago
@fatsomamacheese there was gonna be a NFL team but the guy only had millions and not the Billions required. in there first season he went bankrupt. arena football fields are like half the size of what the alamodome floor. i just wish that the saints would have stayed in san antonio. i went to one of the games when they were n town. spent like 2 hours tailgating then i went to the game.
SAtownZ28 1 year ago
Sheed has seen two threes said over him now against the Spurs that lost a series lol, he has to hate them... First this and then his missed rotation on Horry in 05.
onblock7 1 year ago
Man, I remember that game like it was yesterday. Remember, they played that game in the Alamo Dome.... with live 41,000 fans.... Can you imagine how loud it was in there... WOW. And as he's running away after the shot he's point to Mario Ellie saying "I told you... I told you!!!" Mario later stated that Sean had told him that he still had one more 3 in him. Awesome!

Agreed, I was 13 when this happened.
Also, it's amazing how Robinson and Duncan utterly dominated every Spurs opposition team that year in the playoffs. Swept the Lakers and Blazers like they were dog shit, and it was only the 8th seeded Knicks who finally won 1 game against the Spurs, and without Patrick Ewing and Larry Johnson.

i think this is a forgotten shot. its one of the best plays ever, and it came in the playoffs. the fact that he stands on his toes to not go out of bounds shows awareness out of this world. nobody else would do that in such a moment in the game when all you can think about is making the shot
aberjan21 2 years ago 4
...My ass. Michael Jordan, Magic, Bird etc...please. Great play though but don't make it seem like it was Magic playing all 5 positions or Jordan dropping 55.
thesportsdude09 2 years ago
umm i never said anything like that. my first sentence even specified that i am talking about this SHOT. i didnt say elliot had a legendary game. i just said it is a great play and a great shot. i am not stupid enough to say sean elliot is as great as jordan lol. i duno where you got that from

is it me or were all nba arenas more wild during the 90's?
belevdisrightere 2 years ago 8
Thats because the NBA game was much better back then. Also, 1999 for being a lockout yr produced one of the best Playoffs ever. Alan Houston gamewinner in Miami, LJs 4-pt play, this shot for ELliot, Avery Johnson clinching the NBA Title for the SPurs. Great playoffs.
