I learned at the Atlanta zoo that otters hold on to each other and logs of wood/debris, etc. to ensure they don't go out to sea when sleeping. They form "docks" this way to stay close to the shallow and warmer, safer waters. It is SO CUTE, though!

OMG!! They're not holding hands/paws!! They're sharing body heat. There's mothing really loving about it, in fact, it's quite selfish.. even though it benefits them both.

Then how do you explain where they separate, join together, and OBVIOUSLY reach out to hold each other's paws. The coat of an otter and the preening they do is all they need to retain body heat, they don't require each other. How much body heat do you think they're sharing by floating next to each other. Time for a little otter education! You can share body heat without holding hands. Humans do it all the time, and it looks like the otters have one up'd the humans..you killjoy.
