@Azereiah Lets see, the double bass is an instrument with qualities of every instrument, you can take violin pieces and play them slow. and because the nature of the bass, when you play that. you get a gorgeous sound. with cello, its easier to learn and you get to play some cool stuff. do some research on both of them, maybe start with the piano to get some musical experience then move on to double bass or cello.
@muzicboy99 - He's playing using harmonics, which is what happens when you just place your finger very gently on the string instead of depressing it all the way. What an absolutely beautiful instrument.
i think this was the video that when i was in 4th grade made me want to play the double bass i am in 8th grade and it has become one of my favorite things to do during my 4th period (my orch period) is what gets me through my day i hope one of these days i can have half the skill this man has
@Collin6981 fuck football and sports. dont break a finger. maintain social life. and practice ur ass off. 2 hrs a dayin the summer. get a teacher for christmas also.

@Collin6981 - It takes strength to play, and to carry one around. My son has just started on a 3/4 size and I wouldn't want to be lugging a full-size around! Hopefully by the time my son needs one he will be big enough to help transport it. But I'd suggest looking for a male tutor. I know that's not politically correct, and I'm sure there are women who play beautifully but I ultimately see it as more a man's instrument just due to its size.
@thomidog i play a full size and carry it with one hand on my shoulder once you get used to it is second nature. if i may make a suggestion if you hook you forearms under the curves next to the f hole or place the scroll on the side of your head and grab the bottom of the fret board you can carry it with one hand, but until he becomes strong enough to carry it on the shoulder be sure not to be reckless. The search still continues, and tell your son i wish him luck and to stick with it
I started playing the bass when I was in fifth grade. I ended up quitting when I entered Middle school and I DEEPLY REGRET IT :( I want to play again! I need to convince my parents to at least let me rent a bass for a couple of months. These last two years without playing the bass has been miserable. :'( I LOVE THE PERFORMANCE! :D
@MrPcGames2 I'm Hungarian. Csárdás is our word, you can't just ignore the two century usage of the word csárdás by coming up with this recent anglified blasphemy.
im goin for my 5th year of playing bass and ive been through some tough solos but i gt through it next school year in orchestra i will be trying out for all region for the 3rd year in a row i have made it only twice all region is hard thumbs up if u hav tried out foe all region =)
i have a hard time telling difference between cello and double bass (when listening)....is there any way of telling other than on the extreme low notes?
I was playing for only two years and my teacher had me play Revenge of the Double Bass. I nearly cut off my hands after playing that. It's overly fast, all sixteenth notes, shifting constantly. It's like a toned down flight of the bumblebee.
@McPhersonBassMaster Well, it depends on what you're playing really, some notes can be really hard if they are shifting very much, btw, did you have like stripes on your bass so you could see where you could put your fingers? I had it for almost two years, now i now every tone almost exactly!
I only had stripes on it for the first couple of months, but now I play without any. I also play Cello, Bass Guitar, and Mandolin. Fret markers are very helpful, I have learned.
i've played double-bass for more than 4 years now, i must say its the most beautiful instrument ever made, its nlt a little horrible violin that make slunds
@SWEDISHnFINNISH What i like about the double bass is though its hard to play fast.Anything you play with it sounds good, unless you are terrible with a bow.But without a bow it sounds even more amazing.
@MrGadzhiyev Well the orchestral strings group of instruments have a massive range you know. A professional violinist's highest note is well above most instruments range.
What is the size of that bass? It looks a lot smaller than the ones that are in my teachers room. (I am a freshman, so forgive me if I got something wrong) So even if the spike is completely retracted the scroll of his double basses are still above my eyes
and I am rather tall (about 1.95 meters). So I wonder if I was playing a 4/4 bass today without noticing it your bass is just smaller than the other ones. :D Doesn't mean that I don't like your performance/bass etc. You do a great performance
This might seem like an odd question, WinnieThePoep, but is 18 years too old to start learning classical music on a stringed instrument? As stereotype would have it, stringed instruments seem suited to those who have practiced relentlessly from childhood. If that's not true, I'd love to begin learning the double bass or cello. They just have such a rich sound, it's great.
@Colorfulspheres I'm not WinnieThePoep but damn if you want to do something don't hold back. When your 60 you wont think of 18 as being so young. You learn faster as you get older (I have found) so you could cover many child-years of practice in fewer adult-years.
@Colorfulspheres My fiance is 23 and is just starting the double bass, and it is his first stringed instrument... well, he played piano his whole life (self-taught), and I know that is a stringed instrument, but you get it. He's only been playing the double bass a few months now, and he is taught at the local conservatoire. In five years he's going to join the orchestra... I don't think it's ever too late, but you need to put your soul into it to succeed! My fiance practices 2 hours a day!

Nah bro I listen to ludacris and I am a jazz musician as well as a classical one. @BASSiclyBASSable And I know some people would say (because I've heard it) that plenty of people thought the world was flat and that didn't make it true.
