I'm assuming if you want to do tapping, thinner strings are need because i have tried it with my medium grade strings and no success so far

hit harder I can tap on my low B and e and it sounds fine u really gotta have some force thats why most people put one finger on top of the other.

but the pickups count as much as the force of your fingers .. because if you have a 150$ bass your pickups are shit and if you have a 400 $ one that one hase better pickups

A bit true I am working with a $350 Ibanez SR-304 Sound Gear with 2 double humbuckers with 5 strings but then again I play through a 15 watt guitar amp and I can still hear what little tapping I do.

even though this is 6 months later, you don't need thinner strings, not to insult you but you might just need stronger fingers you could use a finger strengthener
