OCR is in Acrobat 9 about 300$, I.R.I.S Is one of the best for production. And there are very good scan on the fly OCR programs such as Kodak Capture. I don't know the price ranges for those last too but, def not for the average user.

Try SimpleOCR; its free; it has worked great for me... TIP: when scanning, make sure the text on the image is as streight as possible (horizontally align)

I used to wash my hands like every 5 minutes, and went to the bathroom like every 30 minutes, and I HAD to put my socks on JUST right, and HAD to (still have to) put my right shoe on first.. And i HAD to tie them really tight, and just right or i would have to redo. My mom told me that she was 30 mins late to somewhere once because of me and my shoes =p. lost pretty much all of it, i was scared i should get it back if i cleaned me room... OCR is a maturing technology. We are a provider of these services. The best stuff out there is AABBY. They have a product called Fine Reader. Its good stuff but costs around $500. We, or other service providers can also perform these serveices a for a per page charge.
