"Alas, his worst fears were justified, as the heavens roar and great hailstones beat down upon the proudly standing corn." - from sonnet added to Four Seasons -
@edvard1970 Another great thing about this performance: Vivaldi was born in Venice in 1678, lived, taught and composed in Venice, his whole life. And this performance is by a Venetian orchestra and soloist, in Venice. Such a thing, I have never heard or seen. The sound is incredibly beautiful, and the place is, also.
hello everybody, im trying to get into classical music and i could use some suggestion. vivaldi's 4 seasons is the first piece ive been blown away by if thats any help.
Well the one thing about music that is still relevant centuries after its creation is that there is an incredible variety to choose from. I got hooked by baroque music specifically. In my case, George Fredrick Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks. To this day I'll start whistling it spontaneously. That being said, I own several Carmignola recordings, his interpretations of Vivaldi and Tartini are exquisite listening.
The very best ever ! Super speed Bravo MR Carmignola ! What you seem to demonstrate is the extend of theabilities of the baroque bow. It is just fantastic and breathtaking what speed one can reach with this type of bow...
@Cathain78 maybe... I'm italian, and i think that THIS is what Vivladi had in his mind... Probably the Maestra felt the summer as somewhat that rushes away... the idea of the "running away" is the theme of the piece... vivaldi would be proud of this... sorry if i made mistakes =))))
Interesting interpretation, I hadn't thought of it in that way.
I prefered the interpretation of people like Alberto Lizzio, and depicting the slower rumbling power of a summer storm, with faster streaks of lightening coming through the sky. I guess the genius of great art is that it means different things to different people.
@Cathain78 I'm sorry but this presto is the symbol of a summer storm, this is not about nuances and savour. The big savour of this piece is foundend in it's rythm, in the big harmonic tension that Vivaldi has created. If you want to "taste" then listen to Karajan's vivaldi...
I appreciate your sentiments. I suppose it is subjective in how it is best enjoyed.
For me, a storm is about it's rumbling power & majesty, and not it's speed.
I do indeed prefer to savour the intricacy and craftmanship of this piece.
I feel to rush through it is a disservice. But I agree, different people appreciate different things. I'm not saying this is bad (hardly!) just that it's not to my particular taste.
@Cathain78 Yes I understand what you mean.. And I see that you are british, so you know what a real storm coming from the ocean actually is. But what if you imagine Venice during a 1700 summer day [something like a 1700 Las Vegas maybe], with all the people going away from a summer storm? Maybe Vivaldi was more interested in the chaos than the storm itself, as an italian summer storm it's not so majestic... it's particularly uncool actually, because it's very hot and very humid ehehe...
Seen this guy play live three times - blows my mind - no-one plays Vivaldi like Giuliano Carmignola! I think he has the spirit of the Red Priest inside him! PHEW!!!!
At the beginning of this movement Vivaldi wrote "Presto- Tempo Impetuoso d'estate". This is more like "Presto- Tempo Supersonico! If the piece had have been any longer I would have been watching for first the smoke, and then the flames to begin leaping forth from his instrument. While Giuliano seems to be comfortable at that speed, the orchestra seems a bit ragged at that speed. Our band recorded this twice: Once for Decca, and once for Harmonia-Mundi.I think both of our recordings were cleaner.
Yes. He gave me a comp copy. He plays quite well, wouldn't you say? The only criticism I have regarding Venice Baroque is that they (or more precisely their conductor) tends to push the tempos of the more virtuosic pieces a bit beyond their abilities to play it cleanly and accurately. As a result faster pieces tend to sound a bit ragged around the edges. They sound fantastic on slow and medium tempo movements, so if they'd slow down just a hair's width they'd be touching perfection there too.
I might add that I am a big Carmignola/Venice Baroque Orchestra fan and I'd encourage you all to check out their Vivaldi recordings. They have recorded many of his late violin concerti, some of which never before recorded, and these are the ones written for private patrons and some are pretty wild. Proof Vivaldi didn't just write "wallpaper music," and even the 4 Seasons can all sound pretty "hot" if performed well by a period orchestra and a soloist with Carmignola's technique!
Yeah, and it's not so much that they are super tight but that the stick is made to curve slightly outward instead of inward. I own a snakewood baroque viola bow and it is just beautiful. I use it for contemporary church music too as it is quite responsive (but not really suited to the long lines of late Romantic music of course)
this is the revolution! A new way, a new vision: there is a before and an after in history. A have the cd: musicology new basement, listen to the last seconds: so fluent!
è impressionante!!!molto bello, certo che la venice baroque è conosciuta parecchio da tutto il mondo,in effetti suonano molto bene e conosco anche un paio di persone!!!
Exactly. I mean, when he and that orchestra plays they focus on the music as a whole, but if I hear Mutter's version it's like the focus is on her and that's a shame.

Too fast, presto is supposed to be quick but this feels rushed.
They should go slightly slower - enjoy and feel every nuance of the music.
This is an extremely beautiful masterpiece and should be savoured.
This sounds like they are rushing to get to the end.

@Cathain78 then you know nothing about how vivaldi has intended it to play. Try analysing the original scores :)
