its a very common misconception and lie that the bombings in japan ended the war with less casualties than if we had not bombed them, japan was already reaching their breaking point, a more likely scenario is less deaths had we not bombed them. But of course america doesn't want to seem like a dick so that was put forth as a reason for the bombing, when in truth we just wanted to use it to end it quickly and show our strength. People will disagree, but there will never be any proof either way.

Actually, the bomb didn't end the war. Germany, Italy and Japan (and probably also other countries) had already lost the war but Japan had not yet surrendered (in Japan pride is an important value, when Japan lost the war there were mass suicides). Pretty much what this bomb did was for the U.S. to make clear that they were the most powerful nation at that point and (inofficially) to test the atomic bomb.
