they came here for religious freedom--then proceeded to pursecute natives for their faith. what's so proud about that??/ I wish they'd stayed in England. The commonwealth of Mass. owes their native people apologies and free state land for those terrible times!!!
700 men, women and children of the Pequot Tribe had gathered for their annual Green Corn Festival.
In predawn hours, the sleeping Indians were surrounded by English and Dutch mercenaries who Shot and Clubbed them to death while the terrified women and children inside the longhouse were Burned alive. The next day the governor of the MA Bay Colony declared "A Day Of Thanksgiving" as 700 unarmed men, women and children had been Murdered.
@StSimonMartyr You have one of the few true comments regarding this era. That is exactly the way it happened and the majority of Americans are clueless. And John mason the leader of this murder has a fine monument over his body in conn. What's wrong with that? And, yes, our 'Thanksgiving' is partially based on these repetitive 'thanksgivings' to 'God (leave God out of it, please) for massacreing tribes and getting fat and rich off the land!!
@KisameKat The pilgrims lived in England, originally, and fled to Holland, where the Dutch helped them. The Dutch also later helped America in its Revolutionary war of independence from Britain by the way. We have them to thank for a lot of things. The original pilgrims were jailed for being against the official church of England, the Anglican church, the king was angry with them.
@SuperStarsNStripes ....and then, the puritans proceeded to terrorize the native population. nothing to be proud of. they should have stayed in England and everyone would have been better off!!
@windstorm1000 That isn't QUITE how it happened. They formed an alliance with the Wampanoag tribe to mutual benefit. But it is PC to blame everything on that one group of settlers for what strangers came along and did later.
If you want to see a settlement reminiscent of Plimoth Plantation, but with people actually living there and not pretending it's 400 years ago, check out Siasconset Village on Nantucket. Tiny cottages, many with thatched roofs, slightly crooked, built close together on winding dirt footpaths. The rose bushes and hydrangeas planted everywhere add additional charm to an already beautifully anachronistic scene.
Thank you for the trip down memory lane...I did a museum practicum coarse at Plymouth Plantation while at college in the 70's. I was Goodie Warren and cooked 4 meals a day over the open hearth. It was hard work, but very fun and rewarding.
Let us not forget the people who were already here, the native Americans who had their land stolen from them and were not welcome. Let us never forget.
Let us not forget that some of those natives were cannibals. Also, let us not forget that
when the engaged in war, they exterminated all without regard to their victims age or sex.
Let us not forget that they took their greatest pleasure in torturing their captives. The men tortured men, but the women were left to torture children and other women. These natives also conducted the first successful genocide in North America when they wiped out the race of the Kennewick man. Let's not forget that.
@Sigolet yes, but think now...whose land was it again? Who got robbed of everything they had and driven out their homes? Yes, I agree, the natives were not perfect, but they were not killing for greed, like the settlers were. Some even tried to make peace with the english at first, or welcomed them. And who said they tortured women and children?
As a boy we would always travel miles to visit the town of which had the rock and would see the village set up and go to the candy store and get liquorice and taffy, with that and the ocean air never forget the experience of the area of the memorial set up to recall the earliest of our New England Heritage, thanks be to those brave ones that roughed the great waters to begin anew in the journey that lied ahead for us all. Great photography and thank you for the visit!
Beautifully done!.Am researching the Pilgrims, Puritans, and early NE Colonies. I found that the Mayflower was just the first of many ships bringing 10's of thousands - establishing educated English "dissenters"(Pilgrims) and Puritans (reformers of the Anglican Church) as the dominant culture in America until the 19th C second wave of European migration. The Great Migration 1620 - 1645. If the Plymouth reconstruction could afford the salaries, by 1630, the streets would have teamed with activity.

You are here because:
You're religious and you are looking at this video to see and learn about your religious ancestors.
Or you're here because:
You was bored, try to be creative when you wrote something in the search bar and wrote "pilgrims".

Why did the men wear long sleeves shirts on hot summer days???????????
PublicRoyalty100 4 months ago
@PublicRoyalty100 It kept them from being dirty. They only took baths like, once a month.

@PublicRoyalty100 Probably to keep from getting burnt really bad, because they didn't have sunscreen.
