porque hablaban en ese idioma q solo se habla ahi me refiero al catalan el español es UNIVERSAL pero los otros idiomas no tenia sentido hacerlo en aquellos.
@Guiu65 it is the poem collection "Romiosuni" by left poet Giannis Ritsos. In Greece you can find the omonymous CD (romiosuni) by other voices (George Dalaras, Gregory Bithikotsis the original). I think it is EMI records. I doubt if there is a recording of Baltsa though. Good luck.
who could expect it: the poetry of Ritsos, a hudge Greek communist patriot (Lenin Prize winner) ,in greek, sung by a great Greek singer (Baltsa) and composed - conducted by an even greater Greek (Theodorakis), in the Barcelona opening Ceremony, in front of Reyna Sofia. Ironic pages of history, or simply proof that art and athletics can unite the opposite.
GREAT AND MAGNIFICENT GREECE AND GREEK SPIRIT! ΝΥΝ ΚΑΙ ΑΕΙ ΚΑΙ ΕΙΣ ΤΟΥΣ ΑΙΩΝΑΣ ΤΩΝ ΑΙΩΝΩΝ ΑΜΗΝ! FOR THE PAST CENTURIES AND ALL THE CENTURIES THAT WILL COME!!!!!!!
I absolutely love Agnes Baltsa and I mean no offense when I say this, but does anyone else think if she added a gray streak to her hair she might look like a certain character of the Frankenstein variety? I just can't get over the hairdo lol
I wonder whether all those thousands in the stadium and millions throughout the globe had realised that a song entitled "Greek-hood" and all about the Greek people was sung during the ceremony; I mean, yes, the commentator said so, but it's not just about a song written and sung by two Greek people; this song is modern Greece itself
ena apo ta koryfaia kommatia tou mikh, na to akouei olh h gh kai na tous ponaei to gegonos oti h Ellada tous edwse olympiakous agwnes, filosofia, episthmes kai genika lo ton politismo....
@amet1980 I don't think this is what the words refer to even though it's an interesting approach. "theirs" stands for the dead, the ancestors, the heroes, the imprisoned fighters and "ours" stands for all of us, the Greeks/Rwmious/Hellines who inherit the responsibility to continue their legacy and keep fighting for our identity to remain alive and strong.

Seriously great segment! A fabulous Agni Baltsa, and a powerful Mikis Theodorakis (who also composed the music when the flag enters the stadium in Athens 2004).
There is nothing more stupid than identifying a glorious moment of poetry and music with one certain political party, especially when this poem was made to symbolize the fights of an entire nation within all history. Please, show respect.

Agree with that :) Beijing may have been high on spectacle but it left little impression on me - just one troop of 2008 costumed performers after another. Mistaking scale for substance, I think. Barcelona was art.
Que emocion y orgullo me daba escuchar mi idioma y leerlo oficilaente en unos juegos olimpicos, auqnue yo soy mexicano, me enorgullecieron mucho los juegos organizados en Barcelona. VIVA HISPANOAMERICA¡
I will remember that olympic games with special feelings, because my country took the first golden medal there, and it was our first performance! Proud of you, Croatia:)!
We understand pretty well.the poet is ritsos. This song talks about the communist-led guerrillas of ELLAS during the WW2 and their heroic fight against fascism.Ellas had managed to liberate the biggest part of the country before the withdraw of Nazis.
Barcelona's Games were for the time being the best. But, some years later, a small country gave once more the world its pure and sacred values and principles; Simplicity, Ethos, Dignity, Human Brain and Power. Despite the unfair criticism and ironic comments, the Olympic Games of Athens 2004 were by far the best Games ever. These "dream" Games will remain unforgetable in our hearts. Thank you Greece for one more time!
Please don't take this the wrong way, for I adore the great Baltsa! With her hair in that particular style, wearing that dress.....it reminded me of Bride of Frankenstein. All she needed was the grey streak in her hair. Please forgive me for this. I just had to say it. I adore Baltsa! I adore Baltsa! I adore Baltsa!!!!!

The music of Theodorakis is based on the sourealistic poetry of the great greek novelist Odisseas Elitis.
Even the greeks understand the meaning of the words, but not the whole meaning of the song, actually !
So, don't worry spanish friends !
We all hear to a great music and we understand the same !
