the speed test is just one of 3 ( or 4 ) diciplines the horse must pass in the working equitation. There is also a dressage test, a maneability/ease of handling test + an optional cow test. The rider can not compete in just 1 dicipline. usually the competition is done in several days. like eventing/military.
wow, this kind of sport could be something that the horses themselves could really learn to enjoy since it involves speed and everything seems to have a purpose :)
As a showjumper who probably does more dressage than the DQ's at my barn, I can partially understand that. But the problem is, the dressage queens at the place I board are afraid to trot their horses much less leave the security of their circle-so I can't really judge the sport as whole.
Out of sheer curiousity, are you referring to modern vs. classical, or traditional Portugese/hispanic training methods compared to those of the more eastern nations(but then I think of the school in Vienna)?
I'm thinking more on the lines of the "Escuadra Equestre Argentina". The Argentinian School of Wholistic Horsemanship. This is where my instructor came from, and they teach Doma Vaquera, Doma Classica, they break in their own horses amongst other things. To answer your question though, im referring to modern vs. classical/vaquera which are two different styles but taught under the one roof.
At first I wanted to contradict becuz I am headed the direction of this picture above, and I don´t consider myself "Spanish".
But I think you´re right, MrHappy, good comment! I guess using nowadays techniques and standarts, this is not possible to reach for the riders you mentioned.
BUT if a horse is ridden in the right way and there is no longing for a "short term goal", every good rider should be able to do this.
But riders don´t have time and patience. And the horses have to pay for that.
what is this judged on?

This is the first exhibition work I have ever seen that actually looks like a working cow horse.

That type of balance that they portrayed and have is something that people who learn under the German/French style of dressage will NEVER have.
