i would meditate to this tune ... lay back in my car seat during lunch, put on a cassette, close my eyes and slip into another world and return refreshed. started listening to structures from silence back in 1983
I remember when I got copy of this on cassette in 1988. I would sit in my room enduring deep transient meditations. I would set the stereo to loop, so this would play over and over all night.
I got hooked to Steve Roaches music in 1986 on a radio show called Hearts Of Space bought my first cd back in the early 90's rest is history, this man makes awesome music! That track relaxes me and will put me to sleep if I let it. Great Job!
@OublianLeSang I love alot of thrash metal, prog metal, power metal, some doom metal, a little death, and tonnes of other stuff but i also love a lot of ambient too - Steve Roach, Jonn Serrie, Michael Stearns, etc..
I'm the same as you. Power metal, thrash, heavy metal, industrial, folk metal lol loads but I also love the music at the other side of the spectrum, that, to me at least, being ambient music.
Steve Roach, Biosphere, Brian Eno, Pete Namlook etc...all excellent stuff :)
@fistpounder - yeah...great artists! ...i like being eclectic in my tastes - metal and electronic are my 2 fav styles in general though...(I hate rap and country though)
Same here. just can't get most rap and country music. I can respect some of the guitar styles in country music, the finger picking stuff is brilliant if you're watching the right guy playing it.
I do love East Bound & Down by Jerry Reed though...due to the Smokey & The Bandit film obviously ;)
Hey "Bierreisender" (from the highest rated comments section above),
I can help you with that. I live 20 miles east of Philly and still go to the gatherings concerts every once in a while. I went to the one just a few weeks ago with Chuck Van Zyl and Ombient (Mike Hunter). I still listen to Stars End but now I record all 5 hours of EVERY show. Here's how I do it.
This particular composition has been on my Walkman, on my CD player, now it plays from my iPod. It has been with me on every long distance flight, and reassures me, along with some works of Klaus Schulze and a few others, that I will find peace and serenity. Whatever the environment. Thanks for posting so that others can discover.

My CD player died so I downloaded "Structures From Silence" to my laptop, I use it as background music when I am doing research with Google or whatever.
How does Youtube monitor audience attention? The best part of this track is definitely the ending. The synth pads used on this album sound so dated, but I love them. I love all Steve Roach, but there's just something particularly inspired sounding about his 80's and 90's work.
"My suspicions were proven: YT's hotspot insight shows audience attention shoots up around 6:50 and lasts to the end. The part I always fast forward to."
For me it's the opposite, I enjoy the first five minutes better than what follows, especially from 6:50 onwards, when the melodic phrase starts to annoy me.
I had the pleasure of meeting and seeing this guy and I've enjoyed this music for years. Being newly married I had my wife listen to this and she loves it. Amazing that this would still have the dream like feel after all these years. A true electronic music classic.
In 1988, I was a nervous wreck trying to become a better husband, dad, and provider. I asked God for help because I didn't think I had the character to be those things. I was nearly beside myself, and then I found Steve Roach's music. It calmed me, my spirit, and helped put me in touch with the spirit in me that was the peace I'd wanted for a long time.
amazing upload. i love that tune so much, i used to sleep with that tune in my headphones for so many times... its one of the best space songs made ever, and its from 1984 .... speechless, perfect. this song must be an angel theme far above in heaven :)
Yeah just read about his. Steve Roach was inspired to make this music after the music he heard in a near death experience. He wanted to recreate what he heard.
This is fantastic. I used to listen and tape his music about 15 years ago on a Philly program called, "Star's End." I used to have to stay up from 1-5am just to hear it. Imagine trying to stay awake at 1am to THIS!
How ironic in this 21st century of technological evolution that I actually have this track on an audio cassette tape from sometime in the early mid 1990's. Thanks for posting!
Nearly 20 years gone in a blink. This music however is timeless for sure. Every once in awhile its nice to stop what you are doing and listen to Steve Roach. The time we have here is pure luck and in the end the only thing that matters is what we did.
@upuautiii its supposed to sound like music people experience from near death experiences. after a bike crash steve roach heard "the most intensely beautiful music you could ever imagine" and decided "to dedicate my life to re-creating the exact same sound." this album is his attempt to do that, recreate the music he heard from his experience. essentially, this is the music of death and i cant wait to die to experience whatever comes next
Steve Roach had a near death experience, as he headed towards the light
he heard the most amazing music he had ever heard in his life..
This very song is the closest replication of that music,
don't believe me? Look up NDE's go to the first page,
look for the "music" link and it will tell you the story.

Funny that you say that,
many people who have had near death experiences have recognized this music and claimed it to be the closest thing they heard on the other side..
