how can you compare the grandson of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) with us? Believe me that we are nothing like Imam Hussain (as). Neither you nor I nor anyone collectively can compare to him. You don't have to agree with what some people do, but you should never say what you did. It's not right. Believe whatever you want about these people but you shouldn't lower the status of the awliya-Allah because of the actions of others. Plus we all do things (including you) that the Prophet never said to do.

they do matam for the Prophet (pbuh) also on the night of his matyrdom. It's not just senseless hitting as you may think it is. It is a memory of the pains that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) and his family suffered for the sake of all muslims. In Karbala, after all the men were killed, the enemies trampled the dead bodies with their horses. Matam (or hitting of the chest) can be a reminder of that. There are of course some ppl who take it too far and you must know that not everyone agrees with it...

Most ppl don't even understand why they are doing it. Moreover, beating the chest when one mourns is not something that the shias invented as some may believe. It was something which happened long before Islam. It was just a natural sign of grief. If you believe this is not true, you can watch many videos of children in Iraq today who are sitting by parents' grave and beating their chest as they wail. It was something that was seen by all kinds of people around the world. There is even a play...

The individual is essentially beating his/her heart which is in pain

The main thing that I wanted to point out to you that one is directly insulting Imam Hussain (as) when they compare him to us, saying things like he was just regular human being. It is more insulting when someone says this about the Holy Prophet (pbuh) also. They may have had a human body like us in this world, but their noor, their soul is beyond ours. oh and I forgot to mention one more thing. There are many things that they Holy Prophet (pbuh) didn't do that is okay for us to do. Just because Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) didn't do something doesn't mean he didn't do it because it was haraam or wrong. For example, he never drove a car. Does that mean driving a car is bida? Instead, he rode on horses, so does that mean we are not fulfilling the sunnat by not riding on horses also? This probably isn't the best example but you get my point.
