My sifu always said "Soft on hard, Hard on soft" meaning palm strike the head and knee the body. Unless you like making the bones in your hand crunch.
Peace
nice video but that is the striking principle of boxing as well. The body always has to be ahead of the punch. Either its a straigh a hook or an uppercut
im surprised because ive read all of Bruce Lees Jeet Kune do Technique books and through practiced have developed a punching technique that combines this with punching, in some situations you slap in others you punch. And this is the first time ive heard of this Silat training. It amazes me that others have developed this technique also. Just goes to show like Bruce Lee says JKD is not a set Art it is an ever evolving form that is to be expressed by each individual in his own unique form.
hello guys , im turkish and this is a technique ottoman empire used for hundred of years in the battlefield its called '' Ottoman Slap'' you can check for it , it is a very natural movement and let you use your full strength and ottomans were great wrestlers with big body mass so this move fit them very well on the other hand i dont think we should compare this with a punch becuz the reason we punch dont slap is not becuz its stronger its becuz easier to find the target
this man speaks the truth!!! clenched fist fighting isn't the best for a street fight, opened hands move faster and have more uses you can parry slap and eyegouge and open handed smacks will daze you, people need to stop thinking of ring fighting
Man you've taught me so much about self-protection it's un-real i'm like the smallest guy in my school and ever since 1 guy bullied me after watching your videos i used a few of your tips and he stopped forever, your brilliant mate. :)
Read some bruce lee books he explains how you should have your hands open when you start to throw a punch and only close and tense at the very moment of impact so that you dont have that tension restriction in your hand its a hard technique to master but makes for a more powerful punch. Theres nothing wrong with open hand techniques as i see it theres little difference its all about how good you are at that technique.
I think Bas Rutten is a great example of what kind of damage and open hand strike can do. I have seen him devastate opponents time and again with them.
See, it's not how powerful a punch should be but how accurate it is. You could throw a right cross with full force but it won't guarantee a K.O. or bust your own knuckles. Street-fight & ring-fights are VERY different.
That was very interesting.. Bruce Lee taught the use of a loose hand then snapping at the moment of contact in Jeet Kune Do.Do you tell people "my pimp hands strong biotch!" when you do that open hand technique on them? LOL! Sorry I had to ask..
good video...... btu the way he slaps down the fist from above ..... im pretty sure u could hurt your hand doing that.... its not a good idea to do at all
Neither is kicking with your toes pointed but Karate-ka train to do it and thus often dont hurt themselves. I have use open handed strikes (such as the one you mention) to save my arse in many incidents working security. Its MUCH better as a professional to use an open hand (for obvious reasons). Its what you train for man... I was palming through Tiles when I was in a kid because thats what we trained for you know.. so im fine with it..
@TeamWuJin For real in most cases it's more effective and safer to strike with open hand rather than closed fist. Even in mma that's how Bas Rutten hit and it worked for him. Like one good technique I saw in a Paul Vunak video is the ear slap and it works a hell of a lot better than just punching them in the ear because the force disperses over and through the whole ear and surrounding areas rather than being concentrated in one area. Great way to disorient or even ko and deafen your opponent.
I must retract my last comments about the karateka toe kick. I also sincerely say Sorry to TeamWuJin for my own ignorance. Take care, we live and make mistakes and learn.
good video. A slap with the open hand is a powerful strike and it is a quite safe movement. You can slap against a wall and this will not injure your hand. It will dizzle a little bit but thats all. If you try this with an fist strike, you will severly injure your hand.
@bakiiza22 The idea is that is resonates through the hand. Now this is more of a concussive shot than a knockout shot. It has a stun factor as opposed to real damage, not to say it wont hurt the person or even knock them out but it is the not way is it designed scientifically. Basically a punch is smaller area for energy to pass, which can cause the brain to bounce in the skull (KO). this damages the nerves, causing an influx of signals (jarring the person, stunning them).
@bakiiza22 your more likely to hurt your hand in a fist than in an open palm. Slaps deal more damage and hurt the body more, when done right open palms are lethal. most killing strikes are done with an open palm or start with it.
@bakiiza22 Actually Tai Chi practitioners do this too. There is no damage to the palms you stated above. When you strike there is less of a recoil thus saving your palms from the damage. In fact, I rarely strike with my fists in a real fight. I only hit with my fists when I am playing.
The basics of every other martial art done properly, wing chun, tai chi, karate whatever in the end we all got 2 arms, 2 legs, 1 head etc... there are only so many different ways to deliver good power so of course eventually a good strike is a good strike no matter where it comes from.
Go Luke, GO !!! Fantastic videos and great soundtracks whenever you do put them in
I am surprised to see how internal Silat really is. Relaxed and power through proper structure...impressive. I figured the body connection you display when executing your patterns was mainly due to your Taichi or perhaps advanced Northern Gungfu experience. I am always pleased to find the similarities of the arts. Thanks for what you do.
I have been lucky enough to personally feel just how much energy this guy has... Sifu Luke really has so much to give the martial arts community. If he is ever in your area, you should absolutely check him out ---> oh yeah... ...love the part when the kid walks across while you're saying, "when you're aiming for the face" LOL... awesome :)

not exactly ofcourse, but the idea is the same, relaxation in arm with the weight of the punch in the hand.
