If the concept of Cash for Clunkers (giving people govt cash incentives to buy stuff) is so damned good, why not do it on a MUCH larger scale?

The answer is we don't do it because there's that pesky little detail of where the $3B came from...and how it gets paid for. Cash for Clunkers got put on the credit card; added to the deficit. Just a niggling little detail the Obama team never mentions.

A mountain of debt and nothing but a bunch of crappy, inefficient, govt programs to show for it.

How can a decent economist call the cash for clunkers program successful? Take perfectly good cars, destroy them, and subsidize, with tax-payer money, the purchasing of new cars on borrowed money that the buyers can't afford. Do I hear predatory lending? Hurt the used car market, auto repair industry, used parts industry for what?  To artificially elevate demand? What about in 2 years when demand plummits because of the current cash for clunkers plan? What then? Subsidize even more?
