  • How many slots does your makbook have?

Or do you have to take out your ram and put in the new one?

  • my macbook has a 2.13 GHz intel core duo and on crucials web site it doesnt have an option for that?

  • Hey mate,

Thanks for the video, it was a huge help. I've just ordered the same RAM chips as you from Crucial, I put your email address in as you technically referred me to them. Maybe you'll get a discount on something....

I'm wanting to upgrade my HDD also, I don't suppose you know if it's possible to find a 1Tb to fit the Macbook? The ones I've found so far are 12.5mm deep instead of the 9mm required for this model.

    Thanks again!

    Andy

  • @EngineerAn Hi, thanks for the recommendation, not sure what will happen with that. As for the HDD I'm not too sure, I've had a google round and I think the largest drive you can get is a 500GB. They seem to range from £50 onwards, so I'm sure you'll find a good deal.

    Jon

  • i love ur hair.

  • what are the specs on your mac? i heard when they say you can only upgrade to

2 gb of ram you can really do 4gb is this true?

  • Cheers dude, great vid you are the only one on you tube who turns the macbook on at the end. Confidence dude, confidence

  • will upgrading from 2GB to 4GB cause any overheating when gaming?

  • so you can only install 2g's in each slot? no more than 2? for sure?!?!

  • i bought the exact same ram upgrade as you just the other day - still waiting for it in the mail

glad to see it went all ok!

  • wait you can only put 2 ram sticks in it not just 4 separate sticks

  • Will your mac notice that you have install 4GB or do you have to do something so that your mac nows that you've installed more RAM?

  • If you have installed the RAM correctly then the computer should see it straight away.

If neither stick is working after you have installed them then you should get a strange beeping noise from the computer.

However, if one stick is working then the computer will boot, so it is a good idea to check that it is recognising the right amount of RAM that you put in.

Hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, do ask.

    Jon

  • Ok thank you for the help. I understand now I haven't done this yet but was thinking of getting more memory soon.

  • What? Oh Thas how you open a bag.

  • will this make my framerate go up if i play games?

  • Sorry for the late reply, it would certainly help make the game run faster yes, but it wouldn't improve on the graphics, just how fast the game run.

    Jon

  • OMFG! You are Jake from two and a half men!

  • in what episode does jake become this guy

  • And if I buy this Memory/RAM thing can i go the apple store and ask them 2 install it instead of me (scared i might mess up my macbook)? And if thats possible how much would that cost me? plz answer bk. Thank you

  • I'm not too sure on this. I don't think so. It really is simple to do yourself. you won't mess it up. But if you have a local computer repair shop you might be able to take it to them see if they can have a go for you.

  • Sorry, i'm new to this upgrade thing. But isn't he increasing the memory? Or can you increase the memory by increasing RAM ?

  • Memory = RAM.

  • RAM stands for Random Access Memory

    so yeah

  • Hey can you link me to where you bought this it would be greatly appreciated

  • hi I've got the new generation of macbook 13". it has got 2GB RAM and i want it to have 4 GB is that possible?

  • it is...

  • doesn't the macbook need a 64 processor or something in order to use all 4 gigs of ram? Im not sure if the macbook does have a 64 processor

  • Well it made a difference, it all showed up and it was all used when performing certain tasks.

    Jon

  • does it make a huge speed difference

  • I wouldn't say huge, but you will notice a difference.

    :D

  • well it does if you're running data intensive software

  • i just ordered the white one, "OLD ONE" with 4gb ram because I do not like the new grey or the price. But I am hoping with 4gb it is really nice. it is on its way from China though?? What the hell? My last one came from tennessee

  • I've got the 2G DDR2 RAM upgrades; I put them in my macbook, but my computer won't reboot. If I put the original RAM in, my computer works just fine. What's the deal? I know its compatible, I just cant get it to turn on.

  • I had the exact same problem. the thing is, when you insert the memory "chip" you have to apply enough force, make sure the force is even. You will probably hear a small tick sound but that require you to be in a silent sorrounding . I did the same thing and it wouldn't reboot. You posted this a week ago, i am sure youhave done it :)

  • Superjon - thanks for the vid and I laughed when you read the paperwork before opening the box. If you hadn't been ill, i'd be calling you a geek for doing that. A mate bought a brand new BMW and before he drove it away from the sales room, he leaned over, opened the glove box, got out the handbook and started reading. We pissed ourselves because he won't do anything without reading the instructions. But even though he's a geek, he's a very rich geek!

  • Hey thanks for the comment. That is pretty funny. I also know someone thats like that! I don't normally read instuctions, but not buying from crucial before I thought it best, again I was also ill. The only other time I read them is when I know nothing about the product. But thanks again for the cool comment.

    Jon

  • I'd like to ask your advice. I'm considering adding RAM to my macbook. What differences would doing so make? I would like to make a comparison between what I currently have and with a Macbook which has extra RAM.

    Thanks

  • Did it a day or 2 ago, from 1 gb to 4 gb. I can notice a significant difference too! Thanks once more Jon.

p.s cost me around $50 for the lot! Not bad

  • Thanks for saving me a ton of money...really helpful.

  • Hi Jon

    Thanks for the info ...

  • Hi Jon, I have macbook 2ghz core 2 duo and when on crucial website it says max total memory is 2gb. I would love to upgrade to 4gb but concerned whether 4gb will be too much. Will my macbook accept 4gb? I would appreciate your advice

  • As far as I know, that is your maximum amount of RAM you will be able to put into your computer. A way to check it to find the model number of your mac and then go back to the site and make sure you choose the correct model number from the list it gives.

    Thanks

    Jon

  • Yeah, you can't get a 4 gb ram card, you'll need to buy 2 2gb cards, in the macbook ram slots are 2x1gb ram cards. Take out, the 2 1gb's and replace each slot with a 2gb ram card.

  • yeh thats pretty sick eh

  • Ive just upgraded to 4GB RAM too and its definitely snappier. I record my own tracks (see my channel) and its a lot better for Garageband.

I also put in a 320GB HDD and that was just as easy to fit, although the cloning process took a little while.

    Nice vid.

  • i cant watch this video

someone smart please help me in

  • bonnie job, sir. you have my accolades.

  • I just also install 4GB of memory on my macbook, and I don't see any difference, I thought it supose to be faster, I had only 1GB before and it feels the same, why??

  • I defiantly noticed a difference when upgrading, this is because I have been using pro apps, you will notice when using these apps.

    Jon

  • hi.

hey i was wondering if you can help me..

i tried to upgrade my girlfriend macbook. but when i putted the 4 gb ram. it didnt turn on... why is that?

    thanks

    Luis

    hope you can answer

  • Just make sure the RAM is compatible. Another thing to try is try turning it on with the original RAM in, also make sure when putting the RAM in that it clicks when going in.

    Jon

  • you have to put heaps of pressure on the ram when you install

  • Cheers mate...one more thing i want to run word documument for my school work whats the best software to purchase???

  • I personally used iWork from Apple. It is fully compatible with Microsoft Office and I think it works really well. Then again, if you don't want to be spending money then Open Office and Neo Office are great and are also fully compatible with Microsoft Office and iWork. These are great to see whether you need to pay for the software or not. Let me know what you go for.

    Jon

  • Cheers Jon...just to let you now comet are retailing macbook at £586 check out there web site...i purchased one and haggled instore and got mac works & mighty mouse free. Its a buyers market plus i got the new VAT rate as well...Mac.

    dave

  • Hi, if you google crucial and then search Mac on the site. It will give you a list of Apple computers, you can then choose from a list of different Macs. Once you have chosen your Mac it will give you the different types of RAM you can get, and it will be the correct type for your computer.

    Jon

  • Hi superjohn...good video. Whats the cost of RAM for 4gb? The reason is i can get kingston 4gb ram for £46 is this ok...

    Mac.

  • Yeah that is a very good price for RAM.

    Jon

  • Ok thanks.

  • Thanks, and what RAM is considered fast RAM?

  • The RAM it tells you on the site will be a fast brand.

    John

  • where did you order your RAM from? Please amswer.

  • This question is answered above, but I got the RAM from crucial (just google crucial)

    John

  • Very helpful video! Got a question for ya Jon. Right now im using Black Macbook 2GHz with 1GB Memory and i need major upgrading to 4GB lol. I cant find any 4GB kit available on CRUCIAL. Only the 2GB but I could be just blind. I appreciate your help. Thanks!

  • Sorry for the long wait you have had, If you go to the crucial home page you should be able to find a mac page and you will be able to pick your mac out of the list. If not then message me back if you need more help.

    John

  • Thank you very much !! Your video taught me the do how to upgrade my Mac Book from mere 1 GB to awesome 3 GB RAM.

  • Hi, i just bought 2 2gb of ram (4gb total) and i put them in properly and when i turned it on it would turn on then off, and wen i stick a 2gb and a 512mb in, it works fine!!

any ideas how or what i can do??

    thanks,

    Bradley

  • Is there any way to upgrade the graphics card in a mac book??

  • The MacBook doesn't have a graphics card, it has on board graphics.

    John

  • hey, i have a macbook and well, at the end of your video i saw that u have MAc OX version 10.5.3 and i just have vrsion 10.4.11 why do i have a older version than you? :(

  • Hi, It depends on when you bought the MacBook.

    John

  • hi great video I just need to know one more thing. I went to the store and they showed me something like 100 series something like that what kind do I need?

  • 100 series???

  • hye I just want to know where did you buy him and how much did you pay for 1 or 2Go ? I would like to know what is the name or adress of the web thank

  • Hi, if you type crucial into google it will come up with the website I got my RAM from. You can get all the prices for RAM you need.

    Hope this helps you.

    John

  • Can i use any brand of RAM as long as it fits the specifications that you listed?

    thanks

  • Yeah you can use any brand of RAM you like just like you said, as along as it fits the requirements.

    John

  • Don't use Ebuyer ram, I put some in my G5 and I just got a tone of sheer disgust from the machine. Kind of like how dare you!

Stick to Crucial or Kingston, it's a bit pricier but it will please your machine!

  • Thank

  • is there a noticeable difference between upgrading to 3 gig rather than 4 gig? my main reason would be for games on bootcamp/Windows and serious photo editing.

  • I don't think there would be, but Apple recomend that you always upgrade your RAm in pairs of say 2 x 512MB or like me 2 x 2GB sticks. and You will get games to run and they should run fine on 3GB but like I said it would be better for you to put in pairs.

    John

  • I have the MacBook 1,1.

    Can I upgrade 2 x 2GB?

  • As far as I know that should be fine to upgrade to 4GB of RAM.

    John

  • hey john do you have to do anything before you put new RAM in. Like save docs etc. do you need to backup??? i am dumb lol.

    jai

  • Well thats up to you, if you have time machine setup then you don't have to bother, but if not you could just incase the system fails.

    John

  • cheers mate, jus what i was after

  • what kind of ram do you have to buy for a macbook?

  • 667Mhz DDR2 SDRAM

    :) hope this helps you.

    John

  • Im contemplating buying a macbook and was wondering, does this break the warrenty?

  • I personally think its a good idea to buy it and no it doesn't break the warranty on the Mac, Apple allow you to upgrade the RAM and HDD. But if you get in the guts of the computer, then that voids the warranty.

    John

  • what size screw driver are you using, it needs to be a really small one.

    John

  • I just bought 4 gb ram in a macforum store, but i cant get the screws out :(((((

  • you look very tired dude

  • Yeah I was, lol. I've been having problems sleeping, And I think this is when they started.

    john

  • i've just bought a macbook.^^ 1 hour ago! I'm so excited^^

  • I remember buying mine, I didn't know I was going to get till my mum said lets get it now,

    haha

    I hope you enjoy it.

    john

  • obviously ;)

    thx dude

  • I know cant wait till i get mines 2 but I'm gonna wait until Apple releases their new MacBooks in a few weeks :)

  • nice i get my 2GB today.. i heard our macbooks only support 3GB RAM, but im guessing you'd have to install 4GB so it would be even and therefore work..

  • search on wiki for MacBooks, it tells you all about the different models they did and how much RAM they can handle, if its a 2007/2008 model then it will take 4GB

  • Thanks man and thanks for the subscription too.

    John

  • can you direct link me to the page to buy it please mate?

  • crucial(DOT)com/UK and just search for the computer you have. Hope that helps you.

    John

  • how much was the RAM dude just so when i get mine i can upgrade

    cheers jai

  • It cost me £63 I think.

    John

  • is it like completely safe to do that? haha

im nervous cuz im getting a macbook for christmas and i wanna 4 GB of ram but.. apple's pre-installed one is very expensive. so im starting to see if maybe i can buy ram separetely and install it myself but im scared i'll mess my macbook up haha

  • I'm assuming you've got the Santa Rosa chipset in your MacBook. I'm thinking about upgrading my MacBook to 4GB as well, but do you think it will still be sweet because I got my MacBook in September of '07.

  • God yeah, more RAM will always help!!

    John

  • What does ram do? Does it make it faster?

  • Yeah, it 'talks' to the processor and the more RAM you have the faster it 'talks'. For a proper explanation google 'RAM wiki'.

    John

  • Hi John!

I just ordered a MacBook and four gigs of RAM.

Have you tested it out any more with 4GB?

    Gustav

  • Yeah, after having it there for more than a week, it defiantly makes a difference. Did you order the MacBook form Apple with 4GB?

    John

  • No, I ordered both the computer and 2x2GB ram sticks from another online store.

  • How much did it cost you, and what spec is the MacBook?

  • It cost 11000 SEK, but 9100 without taxes, so I pay about £767 for it all.

It's the cheapest MacBook so the specs are:

    2.1GHz

    1GB RAM installed

    120GB HD 5400 rpm

  • That sounds like a nice system.

have you owned a Mac before?

    John

  • I thought so too.

    No, actually I haven't, so I'm a bit excited!

Is it easy to learn and getting used to?

    Gustav

  • Yeah its really easy to get used to. I bought my Mac and had no clue how to use it and you just pick things up so quickly, you should start watching some videos on tips for mac users.

    John

  • I've watched some tips vids, and I think I'm starting to get a clue about how it works.

Do you have any favorite ones that you can share with me?

    Thanks for the help!

    Gustav

  • You should go check out Ramin's channel search for raminsmactasticshow he has some brilliant videos on tips and apps for the Mac.

Plus if you need any help once you have got it just message me one here.

    John

  • Thanks man!

  • No worries man, anytime.

    John

  • yay its better now. still cripples me to watch it though XD xxxxxxxx

  • I know it does baby, as you have just pointed out =]
