Tarja on the other hand is pretty sub-par as far as opera singers go. I don't see any reason to think she's unique or amazing. SHE is nothing without Nightwish and they're better off without her.

That doesn't make her exceptional, it only makes her different. That being said, Tarja is also not THAT amazing at it either, it's just that she sings Metal. There are many other amazing Lyric Singers out there... Emma Shapplin, for instance...

I've been following Lacuna Coil since 2003, and they're in my top 10 favorites, maybe top 5. Have all their albums, except that short early one prior to Unleashed Memories. Every album has a different feel and sound to it, but never have I been disappointed. The sound, the lyrics, the emotion, Cristina, and even Andrea are awesome! The only person that can stand up to Cristina is Maria Brink. If you don't know about In This Moment, search them right now!
