  • Luv the vid and song what was the story with the old lady appearing thru the vid i wonder?

  • I love aztec camera! Wonderful guitar playing.

  • thanks for posting luv da song heard it today on direct tv alternative music channel 839

  • Video filmed in Hythe, but this is a little love letter to East Kilbride which is Roddy's home town and remains bloody baltic every winter to this day. Good for the snow.

  • This is a classic song in 'THE CANON'. No doubt.

    This is life.

A wee Scottish bloke. A Socialist. Dressed like an old American Buccaneer in a fringe jacket singing about the most optimistic song anyone could be fortunate enough to hear.

A video which is pointedly anti-glam. Featuring an old woman following a young man to a beach which I love to imagine is in Leith.

And the sentiment is just to BE STRONG and TRUE.

AND. He wrote the song and is a great guitarist too. Take that X factor!

  • Where can I find a better quality version of this? The album version is nothing when you compare

  • This song brings back so many memories. Going out on a Friday night after "The Tube" with Jools Holland and the late great Paula Yates. Blimey, where has the time gone............

  • One of the songs that brings back a million memories... fab

  • Was Craig Gannon involved in Highland hard rain?

  • Camer/ic/a

  • Hythe has changed a bit since 1983

  • I believe Roddy wrote this when he was 17...talk about bieng a genius.

  • @ThePetepiper Tears for Fears guy wrote "Suffer the children" at 18.

  • I am happy that a quirky and cool musician named Roddy Frame exists in this world. I am just saddened by the fact he did not get the recognition he deserved..My favorite song from the 80s !!

  • Highland Hard Rain - get it and discover genius of Roddy Frame. Blagged our way into Shepherds Bush in 1989, claiming we were Scottish, despite my East london accent. Roddy - the man

  • Roddy Frame is the man

  • one of THE BEST EIGHTY songs.... this band was so jazz/pop/new wave they were cool....listened to this all through high school too bad my school was full of rockers...lol thanks whoever posted this... if only we had u tube when we were in high school....

  • I was 7 when I saw this on Max Headroom on channel 13 way back in '85!

  • I heard this on "Old Grey Whistle Test" back in 1983; I was captivated by it, and couldn't believe when I found out that this amazingly talented guy was just a teenager like me! Wonderful lyrics and guitar work - still sounds just as great :)

  • Fantastic track - strange to think that if Roddy had not have written this, then Johnny Marr may not have written This Charming Man.

  • great.........

  • great sound; poignant lyric. Fab. xxx

  • Hehe I got high land hard rain cd

  • the album is High Land Hard Rain. You can still get it but expensive.

  • Fab. I think the more frantic, less-produced album version is better (no keyboards, guitars sooo fast! - and female backing singers). I have this track on album (High Land, Hard Rain), 7-inch, 12" (actually bought in the 1980s!) and I've even used CD decks to fuse the album track with the 12" extended version which I may post here..... Roddy is a star!!!!

  • I miss 80's music. This is so good, reminds me of going to high school in Canada.

  • Great song!

On a xmas cd I once bought. Don't know wether they pretended this song to be one. But during these old-skool-xmas-day song time a relief

  • Roddy is my guitar god.

  • This is amazing. WherecanIgetit.

  • Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!

  • a fabulously simple tune but so affecting in the minor key, feels like it should be a sad song but i'm always uplifted when i hear it. It was one Terry Wogan who got me hooked on this about 3 years back. Thanks Terry ...and Roddy of course

  • maravillosa cancion .muchos recuerdos.d(._.)b

  • There's something about the vhs quality of this video that makes it that much better

  • YOU MAY RETURN TO TOP OF THIS WONDERFUL VIDEOCLIP IN HQ?

    Would be eternally grateful

  • The "walk out to winter" single version. A completely different recording to the album track of the same name.

  • this is the catchiest song ever, although i like the album version better. i dunno what version this is.

  • I saw them open for someone back in 83 or 84. Liked them so much I bought their album (vinyl, still have it). What ever happened to them? This was a great band.

  • I think it's about growing up and having a soulmate to "walk out to winter" with you. I love the line about how they breathlessly talked in tongues -- when they talked together, they "got" each other.

  • @JustLN66 Good description - don't we all wish we found a soulmate who "gets" us like no-one else? I found mine, and I sent him this video :)

  • tune.

  • geee ! make me cry sooo pure<3

  • F-ing incredible in retrospect.

    Inch perfect pop.

  • I heard this song for the first time last week. It is the most beautiful melody I have heard in a long time. What do the lyrics mean, though? Does anyone know what he's talking about?

  • sheer coolness! the wee boy from east kilbride

  • fantastic!

  • fantastic!

  • Excellent Guitar playing . Me Love It!!!

  • where is this filmed? Does anyone know..?

  • @earlscourtsw10 Most of this was filmed in Hythe, Kent. The telephone box at 00:30 is at the end of Albert Road. I lived there at the time the video was shot (can't remember when, but must've been between '82 and '84) Some of the shots near the end are out towards Dungeness.

  • ahhhhh memories, take me back there

  • A 'goosebump' track! in the best possible way ;)

  • What fantastic memories this song brings back for me.......... the 'before i was married' days......... footloose and fancy free .. those were the days :-)

  • Thank you Kondowsan :)

  • whoever posted this THANX! this was my favourite high shcool song...such a feel good song

  • This song hasn't aged a bit in 26 years, just as vital and fresh as it was in 1983.

  • I bought this record when it came out in '83 and used to play it over & over cuising around in my Austin 1300!

  • I can relate to that. I went through that a couple months ago(Im only 19). Aztec Camera gets me in a good mood.

  • Only searched for this song as it was played at the end of BBC's 'Snow Watch' the other day. I'd never heard it before but really liked it. Glad I found it!

  • It s great to hear this song back, thanks for uploading!

  • Great album even now..I was his age at the time. Amazing guitar player who never

    got the respect he deserved

  • I agree with you totally. Back in the 80's most guitar players could barely play three chords, and Roddy was doing these brilliant acoust guitar solos, miles away from everyone else.

  • Holy shit indie bands back then were tight.

  • @Catch22ish Indie bands back then were actually Indie as well!

  • The wonderful Roddy Frame; one of the best records of the 80's it is so evocactive it always makes me cry - oh to be 21 again...

  • Makes me remember listening to this album for hours in my bedroom at my parents house....sigh. How life changes....

  • The wonderful Roddy Frame; so evocative and one of the best records of the 80's it always makes me cry

  • great song, audio quality sucks

  • Aztec Camera to me are like a glass half-full type of person's Smiths! (though I love both bands myself).

Interesting how Johnny Marr was in some way influenced by this song.

  • "A couple of days before I wrote 'This Charming Man' I'd heard 'Walk Out To Winter' (by Aztec Camera) on Radio 1, and I felt a little jealous. My competitive urges kicked in. I felt that we needed something up-beat and in a major key for Rough Trade to get behind." quote from johnny

  • Define guitar. Roddy Frame? Define soulfful lyrics. Same.

  • Agree with Mercurybeam below...has a very emotional impact...found my old single of it the other day and reminded me why it was one of the very few records i recall buying at that time....emotive, evocative...heart rendering....

  • Loved Aztec Camera to death back in the day... Haven't heard them in god knows how long. Still sounds great.

  • One of these songs which make you cry, you don't even know why... maybe because it's pure beauty !

  • One of the all time greats of the early 80's

Their album High Land, Hard Rain (1983) has to be one of the best for that era.

    I love this song.

  • My very most favoritest Aztec Camera song in the whole wide world!!! :-))

  • Collonera, és Sant Antoni a Eivissa.

  • fuck man this is an awesome song.. i love playing the 12inch version..

  • desde san antonio abad ibiza españa youtube...la honorable sociedad

  • lov this song,,back in the ole good days

  • OMG I loved this song. I loved this album! This really takes me back.... Thanks for posting!

  • guys i highly recommend this video to be everyones favorite so please respond

  • this is the best song the 80`s had done.i will never get tired listening to it even a hundred times.

  • ..............that was the first song of Aztec Camera that they use a synthesizer/keyboards done by Bernie Clarke (1982),..............and released in 1983.

  • Johnny Marr wrote Charming Man after listening to this, and 2 other songs on the same night

  • Makes so much sense.

  • brings back the great years, the 80s of course!!!!

  • I knew about this band, but I've never actually listened to them until yesterday. This is a good song and so is Oblivious.

  • this song is very popular in the philippine in the 80's

  • For me...the greatest and most sweetest song ever written....i just love Roddy's guitar at the end !!!!!!

  • Well done you! There is someone for everyone. I am a mad music fan adore 5the beatles and bowie. But this IS the ultimate track, fab lead guitar greqat singing. I thought I was alone.

  • @roddyframe123456 My dad hated pop music, with very few exceptions, The Specials and some Propaganda, come to mind. I could tell how surprised and impressed he was by this, from the 1st time of hearing. Nothing would give me greater pleasure, if he was around now, than to play this for him! Also remember him remarking on how Killermont Street, was highly unusual amongst my record collection, as you could actually hear every word he sang!

  • machu...

  • Here's another great British band that never made it at all in the US. There are lots of bands like that. Manic Street Preachers, Stereophonics etc etc. the list goes on. I live in both countries but think the music is 100 times better in the UK.

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written. And the rest of the album is at the same level.

  • I was born in 1992 but even i think that alot of the music of the 80s was great and that it puts alot of modern music to shame.

  • brilliant !!!! oh to be back to the 80s and away from the shite of today :(

  • What about the 'B' side 'Set the Killing free' feckin marvelousssss

  • Forewarning, I've been asked to remove my audio of this song and Oblivious from my videos by an unknown 3rd party due to copyright.

  • yep i sound real old doing this....but ah it takes me back to winter of 83 in oregon....snowy...party at a friend's house... these guys and blue nile were two of the best ever (both scots). except blue nile is still around. sucky these guys are gone

  • for me, this song was the last classic brit synth that I've heard..................its so very nostalgic.

  • Why this song is so inside of me?

    Wonderful!

  • Oh how I love this song!!

  • High Land Hard Rain is a perfect album even now.

  • High Land, Hard Rain remains on my list of all time favorite albums. When you can remember every track lyric for lyric - you know it's the truth. Aztec Camera is the truth!

  • Easily one of the most gifted singer/songwriters. I've been a fan since the first Aztec Camera album.

  • I had this tape in rural japan 9/1984..everytime september rolls around I want to listen from pillar to post or walk out to winter

  • sixth form at bossie comp....

  • saw them live back in 1982,bloody brilliant!!

  • questa è musica

  • I have this album, this song have the longest intro ever. I wish I could see him perform live.

  • Thank you Sir.Roddy.because of your great guitar and synth complexion for that song......good luck to the members and former members of A.Camera (1981~1995) and to Sir.Cutler (1923~2006)....................

  • Really great One ob the best songwriters around the world. He did this when he was eighteen. I'm very prouf of knowing him and heis a friend of mine. Keep up this good work Roddy. 25 years on the road !

    Eres grande Roddy !

  • O so great ja ja!

  • No se porque cuando escucho esta cancion siento algo de Virus ...

  • Can someone upload a better sound quality version of this video? Thanks

  • The video is awful and Roddy sounds like he is singing in a dustbin. A truly marvellous song though, I hope someone can post a version with higher quality sound. One of the greatest songs ever, amazing guitar at the end.

  • must be bognor lol brilliant reminds me of summers in Edinburgh

  • Great stuff. Pity is is out of synch at points.

I had to flog all my postcards years back. I had both of AC's postcards Just Like Gold and Mattress of Wire. Luckily I taped them before I sold them.

The tape got eaten in my carcassette a few years ago.

I'd love to hear Just Like Gold again. And the version of "letters" on the flipside was very cool.

  • Where can I download Just Like Gold?? I can't find it anywhere!

  • I own it on postcard records including the postcard! Can't download it- just thought `I'd make you jealous

  • thanks, the least you can do is put the music on youtube

  • I got "Roddy Frame & Edwyn Collins - Just Like Gold [Live in London 09-30-01]", dunno if U'd like that one =P

  • Thanks! I nearly ran away from home over his fringed jacket - was banned from buying one by parents and felt this was cause enough to pack my bags and head for London Ha!

  • filmed in hythe and dungeness - he was one of my heros back then I'd have gone and bought him an ice cream if I'd known.........

  • so much agree with the comments here. The opening is amazing, made me shiver, and the pathos... this was how 16 felt and the Smiths had just got going...

  • I love the atmosphere- classic video!!!

  • Thanks for posting this video. Roddy Frame looks so cool!

  • Because, this is classy in the truth forever !

    - BabyJesus -

  • the synth at the start, really moving

  • Yeah, Scotland does not have nice beaches or good weather, but we sure have some talented musicians :)

Love it! Would also be interested to know where they filmed it.

  • could it be Saltcoats?

  • filmed in Hythe Kent small seaside town nr Folkestone..

  • The Video was filmed in Hythe in Kent.Small seaside town nr folkestone..Very bleak in the winter. Also looks like some shots nr Dungeness just along the coast which is equally bleak.Guess it fits with the song title.Very low budget...

  • It is indeed Hythe, I lived in the flat at the top right of the picture at 0:15!

  • I have the Extended version on mp3 with amazing intro!! 13.121kb so might not be able to email otherwise yous are wecome to have it :) let me know?

  • this song makes my blood run cold!!! it's simply fantastic ... or better, all the aztec camera's songs are fantastic!!!!

  • He's so young! and yet so talented. Beautiful video.

  • This is an extended version in 12 inch, isn't it?

  • from the look of it, it looks they shot the video in Saltcoats or Ardrossan, aren't I right?

  • OMG. notice how Roddy changes dress half way through. LOLZ!!!!!! fantastic video.

  • God, I love this song.

  • This was the first Aztec Camera record I bought, stll love it.
