Dear friend, if you want to listen to this song again as well as an endless number of love songs I suggest you visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - look for the URL in Google (search Musica para Mimos). Greatest romantic hits of all times!!!
Video filmed in Hythe, but this is a little love letter to East Kilbride which is Roddy's home town and remains bloody baltic every winter to this day. Good for the snow.
A wee Scottish bloke. A Socialist. Dressed like an old American Buccaneer in a fringe jacket singing about the most optimistic song anyone could be fortunate enough to hear.
A video which is pointedly anti-glam. Featuring an old woman following a young man to a beach which I love to imagine is in Leith.
And the sentiment is just to BE STRONG and TRUE.
AND. He wrote the song and is a great guitarist too. Take that X factor!
This song brings back so many memories. Going out on a Friday night after "The Tube" with Jools Holland and the late great Paula Yates. Blimey, where has the time gone............
I am happy that a quirky and cool musician named Roddy Frame exists in this world. I am just saddened by the fact he did not get the recognition he deserved..My favorite song from the 80s !!
Highland Hard Rain - get it and discover genius of Roddy Frame. Blagged our way into Shepherds Bush in 1989, claiming we were Scottish, despite my East london accent. Roddy - the man
one of THE BEST EIGHTY songs.... this band was so jazz/pop/new wave they were cool....listened to this all through high school too bad my school was full of rockers...lol thanks whoever posted this... if only we had u tube when we were in high school....
I heard this on "Old Grey Whistle Test" back in 1983; I was captivated by it, and couldn't believe when I found out that this amazingly talented guy was just a teenager like me! Wonderful lyrics and guitar work - still sounds just as great :)
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Fab. I think the more frantic, less-produced album version is better (no keyboards, guitars sooo fast! - and female backing singers). I have this track on album (High Land, Hard Rain), 7-inch, 12" (actually bought in the 1980s!) and I've even used CD decks to fuse the album track with the 12" extended version which I may post here..... Roddy is a star!!!!

a fabulously simple tune but so affecting in the minor key, feels like it should be a sad song but i'm always uplifted when i hear it. It was one Terry Wogan who got me hooked on this about 3 years back. Thanks Terry ...and Roddy of course
I saw them open for someone back in 83 or 84. Liked them so much I bought their album (vinyl, still have it). What ever happened to them? This was a great band.
I think it's about growing up and having a soulmate to "walk out to winter" with you. I love the line about how they breathlessly talked in tongues -- when they talked together, they "got" each other.
I heard this song for the first time last week. It is the most beautiful melody I have heard in a long time. What do the lyrics mean, though? Does anyone know what he's talking about?
@earlscourtsw10 Most of this was filmed in Hythe, Kent. The telephone box at 00:30 is at the end of Albert Road. I lived there at the time the video was shot (can't remember when, but must've been between '82 and '84) Some of the shots near the end are out towards Dungeness.
What fantastic memories this song brings back for me.......... the 'before i was married' days......... footloose and fancy free .. those were the days :-)
Only searched for this song as it was played at the end of BBC's 'Snow Watch' the other day. I'd never heard it before but really liked it. Glad I found it!
I agree with you totally. Back in the 80's most guitar players could barely play three chords, and Roddy was doing these brilliant acoust guitar solos, miles away from everyone else.
"A couple of days before I wrote 'This Charming Man' I'd heard 'Walk Out To Winter' (by Aztec Camera) on Radio 1, and I felt a little jealous. My competitive urges kicked in. I felt that we needed something up-beat and in a major key for Rough Trade to get behind." quote from johnny
Agree with Mercurybeam below...has a very emotional impact...found my old single of it the other day and reminded me why it was one of the very few records i recall buying at that time....emotive, evocative...heart rendering....
..............that was the first song of Aztec Camera that they use a synthesizer/keyboards done by Bernie Clarke (1982),..............and released in 1983.

High Land, Hard Rain remains on my list of all time favorite albums. When you can remember every track lyric for lyric - you know it's the truth. Aztec Camera is the truth!
Thank you Sir.Roddy.because of your great guitar and synth complexion for that song......good luck to the members and former members of A.Camera (1981~1995) and to Sir.Cutler (1923~2006)....................
Really great One ob the best songwriters around the world. He did this when he was eighteen. I'm very prouf of knowing him and heis a friend of mine. Keep up this good work Roddy. 25 years on the road !
