Brilliant acting !!! Al Pacino is one of the best actor in thus world !!! I think that everybody who saw this movie cried at this part of the movie !!!! amazing movie !!!! Francis Ford Coppola is genius !!!
How come everyone was saying Sofia Coppola was an awful actress? I barely seen the third installment yesterday and I don't think she was that bad, she was merely an amateur but she did have a grip on acting. Francis Ford Coppola said this scene had the production team crying as they watched Al Pacino deliver an amazing performance....I agree.
Someone explain why exactly Pacino didn't get an Oscar for this or any of the other Godfather films, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, Scarface, Any Given Sunday or Devil's Advocate but he got it for Scent of A Woman? That wasn't even his best film or acting performance compared to those other films. Look at this scene, that scene alone could've been enough for an Oscar but it wasn't to the Academy.
@PrimeTimeJokesta For Godfather 1 he lost supporting actor to Joel Gray in Cabaret. For Godfather 2 he lost to Art Carney in Harry and Tonto. For Godfather 3 he wasn't even nominated.
@nrkgalt I know, I remember. I'm saying that he should've been nominated for this film but he was overlooked. This film is underrated and Pacino gave a damn good performance. It's just a shame he didn't at least a nomination for his work in this film. :(
in the movie commentary, when michael has his mouth open, he was always screaming, but coppola thought it would look better if it seemed like he held his breath for a very long time and in the end realease a desperate scream. so he muted al pacinos voice until that scream.
No one knows what its like to be in that situation. Only a few people ever could have possibly experienced such instant grief on unimaginable levels. Al Pacino interpreted what he considered the correct behavior and emotion for that scene. It is really incredible how he pulled it off. That was one of the most painful things ive ever watched and yet I knew it wasnt even real. That was cting on a whole different level. If it even was acting, it felt like he became Micheal. he didnt need to act.
This scene is awful, Godfather 3 was awful, my dad said it sucked, I thought how could it, the first two were great and then the third was just a peice of garbage, even Al Paccino wasnt good in this one, he looks like he is conctepated in this scene.
@MasterLive013 Ah, I had not thought of that. For 20 years I thought Pacino just held that expression, inhaled and let out that primal scream. But Coppola may indeed have told him to act the part and just cut out the sound. It's an interesting point.
IMO this is one of the best scenes of all the Godfather films. What is portrayed as an extremely strong and resilient figure coming to complete devastation in seconds. Powerful scene.
Like the bishop said, "Your sins are terrible, it is just that you suffer". Sure the mobster life is good, but in the end it will bite you in the ass in the worst possible ways.
This was just a heartbreaking scene..I almost cried...you can feel the devastation in his scream...that's how amazing Al Pacino is..this movie is not given as much credit as it should get...but the ending was weak and the girl's acting was just beyond terrible...but still a classic and sad film...these are movies...
This scene (just this 11 seconds) brought a tear to my eye. As a father, I can't imagine losing my little girl. The emotion he shows here is so unbelievably powerful.
@gkopacz hey, they guy's been killing people all his adult life! Know what you mean, though, the grief is powerful and understandable as a parent. It's a kind of perverse genius that this movie makes us feel sorry for the bastard though!
i couldnt get sad by this lol i dont think i have a soul, it made me sad that Vito died lol but this.. nothing at all i guess the finale ending sucked ass i would have loved to see some more and Al didnt really play the acting of Michael Corelone more the acting of himself i miss Tom hagen to.
this scene sums up the fall of michael corleone. I can feel his soul burning in agony with his scream. it is heartbreaking to see this stoic, strong individual finally break down after 30 years.
it strikes me so much. he tried to do what he thought was right his entire life, only to end up holding his dead daughter. You can see from his eyes how it transitions of a incomprehensible dream into a horrible reality, just before being unable to even breathe or cry for a few eternal seconds. Never seen such a perfect tragedy.
I'm sorry but al saves it, he was awesome. Film was ok, but he made it awesome.... i love the films and this is up there with the other two, fuck sofia, look at the movie, not the one person, was a fitting end.
Sofia Copolla may have been a pretty big problem (which is why she didn't want the part in the first place, she knew she wasn't up for the job), but the confusing story and script and lack of Robert Duvall took away a lot of potential emotional resonance from this movie. It's still better than ninety percent of the crap that's been shelled out in the past decade.
The only half-way effective scene in Part III (and I literally mean this 11 seconds), but even the score is wrong somehow. It's more reminiscent of elevator music.
sofia's acting was straight garbage and almost ruined the movie. diane keaton's reaction to her daughters death was probably the most realistic ive seen on film in some time. great job by her.

People don't seem to understand that Vito was meant to be a romantic hero, while Michael was intended to be the tragic villain. There are significant differences between the two, particularly the fact that Vito was primarily concerned with taking care of his family while Michael desired to reach legitimacy, to climb the hierarchy in American society. Those differences were placed there for a reason, and wasn't meant to be a fault in Michael's character.
@MultiUncensored: She was "going to"? She did, cuz she muted his first scream, because it was too agonizing and put the music over it. And if you ask me: The muting of the first scream adds to this beautiful. Say anything you want about Godfather 3, but this scene makes up for it big time.
@doox420: Oops. I always write she, when i'm not supposed to. I was talking about Sopgia Coppola, who has in fact nothing to do with the scream itself.
I believe it was her though, who admitted that the first scream was muted, because it was too much.
Michael may have done a lot of bad things in his life but yet somehow we still root for this miserable runt and even feel his pain... simply because of Al Pacino's ingenious acting that wins everyone's heart! Whereas the actual innocent victim here (his daughter) we feel almost nothing for her. In fact when she dies it's more like good riddance thank God she's off the screen! The power of acting. WOW!
I know nothing about acting really. I just know like whos good and stuff like that. So when people say "Sophia Coppola ruined Godfather III", I believe them, but the truth is is that I didn't pay attention to that at all. I thought this was a GREAT movie.
@diplomats12353 yes the movie in itself was fantastic as well as part one and two but Sophia Copolla`s acting was BRUTAL! absolutely terrible..... such a shame that Winona Ryder had to dropped out of the movie... she would have done MUCH better...
@lcromy - Amen brother. I walked out of this movie and I wanted to find a bat. All I wanted to do as find a bat and just start swinging. Took me three days to calm down...
@lcromy I don't think she ruined Part III. Part III was amazing like its predecessors, but it obviously fell short of the timeless excellence of both Part I and Part II. There was too many expectations bestowed upon it--and since Sofia was the weakest link, every one has criticized her for the "underwhelming" Part III.
But honestly, unlike everyone else, I loved Part III almost as much as it's predecessors. It may not be better or equal to them, but it's a lot better than 98% of films.
@BBR1394 Agreed. Godfather 3 didn't work for a variety of reasons. Apart from Pacino's confession in the movie, he didn't really channel Michael Corleone in this movie. I know he was older and more frail towards the end, but so was Marlon Brando at the end of Godfather 1 and he still acted his party beautifully. Furthermore, this movie needed more familiar faces mainly Tom Hagen. Lastly, Andy Garcia and the incest storyline was a fail.
@BBR1394 I feel that due to the Golden Raspberries she received and rather vocal critics, Sofia Coppola has become universally hated by many Godfather fans. Sofia herself said that she never really wanted to be an actress, hence she was not prepared for the role. Besides, it was her father's decision to cast her, after the appointed actress Winona Ryder fell ill. Just give her a break, OK? She has become an Oscar-winning director anyway.
@animangamania I did give her break, and I did state that I felt that even though she wasn't that great, she wasn't the reason why Part III was the weakest of the Godfather Trilogy. I said that the reason I believed Part III was the "weakest" is because of every one's expectations. Part I & Part II are some of the greatest films of all-time, maybe even the greatest, so a lot of pressure was on the third--people wanted something as equal, if not better, than the first two--to be a masterpiece.
@BBR1394 That being said, it's impossible to measure up to such staggering expectations, so a lot of people (critics & audiences included) crucified the film for being "underwhelming". And like I said, "since Sofia was the weakest link, every one has criticized her for the "underwhelming" Part III", because she was certainly the weakest of a stellar cast, which isn't her fault considering her being forced to participate in the film, due to the absence of Winona Ryder. So, calm down.
I believe the VHS version of the godfather III had an uncut ending where michael was screaming for at least a minute. In this version, we see his screaming muted for some reason. You can obviously tell that his screaming was muted. I dont know why they did this. The original ending is so much better with michael's uncut screaming.
@dingdang321 I don't know. It looks more like he's attempting to scream, but it's caught in his throat at first. Then he's finally able to take a breath and lets out a scream. I'd say this is more powerful than a solid minute of wailing.
Yeah, Vito would have been devastated completely, he would have probably never spoken to Michael again.......and yeah i think Vito would have just kept Fredo out of the family business but i don't think he would have banned him....Vito loved his sons very much and family always came first for him....for Michael it seems, it was always business first and that's why he lost the women in his life....Vito stayed with his wife untill death for example :).
yep...it's because Michael followed a path that was not like Vito's and even though Michael held the family together, he still commited terrible sins (killing his own brother for example....i can't even imagine Vito's face if he was alive and knew this)
@swannyhead Well, in Part I, Apollonia was innocent :). But yes, this film is a masterpiece of its time, although not as perfect as the first two, it is still a worthy second sequel.
No, I think people don't like it because Coppola's performance was just bad. There's really no sugar coating it. Also, I think that the characterization was weaker than the first two films.
It wasn't a bad movie, it just wasn't as good as the first two. They set the bar so high that mediocre looked terrible by comparison.
Godfather III is kind of underated movie because Michael doesnt want to more power to hurt more people but to save his soul and make family legitimate. I think GodFather III is perfect natural sequel for a realistic story. For realistic, I mean, that "appears real". Only when you have dealed with internal demons for decades while performing as a godfather, and committing all kind of sins, only then, you can understand that money is not happiness and then have desire to turn to goodside of life.
I think this was the most moving scene of the whole trilogy. Mary's death was very sad. She was so young. In the beginning Michael couldn't even scream. He needed some seconds to take a breath before letting out the scream. It was the only scene in the Godfather trilogy that almost made me cry. Al Pacino is one of the best actors ever, and I think this was his best role. I'm a huge fan of his.

No, seriously, Pacino was brilliant. Again.

that scream was not of the loss of his daughter, but was at the horrible acting that just destroyed his movie

@lcromy yeah, bad actor is bad. although the movie is still awesome.
flektrum 1 year ago
@lcromy I don't think she ruined Part III. Part III was amazing like its predecessors, but it obviously fell short of the timeless excellence of both Part I and Part II. There was too many expectations bestowed upon it--and since Sofia was the weakest link, every one has criticized her for the "underwhelming" Part III.
But honestly, unlike everyone else, I loved Part III almost as much as it's predecessors. It may not be better or equal to them, but it's a lot better than 98% of films.
BBR1394 11 months ago
@BBR1394 Couldn't have said it better. Part 3 takes way too much heat.
Hellblazer311 11 months ago
@BBR1394 Agreed. Godfather 3 didn't work for a variety of reasons. Apart from Pacino's confession in the movie, he didn't really channel Michael Corleone in this movie. I know he was older and more frail towards the end, but so was Marlon Brando at the end of Godfather 1 and he still acted his party beautifully. Furthermore, this movie needed more familiar faces mainly Tom Hagen. Lastly, Andy Garcia and the incest storyline was a fail.
xSayHiToTheBadGuyx 11 months ago
@BBR1394 I feel that due to the Golden Raspberries she received and rather vocal critics, Sofia Coppola has become universally hated by many Godfather fans. Sofia herself said that she never really wanted to be an actress, hence she was not prepared for the role. Besides, it was her father's decision to cast her, after the appointed actress Winona Ryder fell ill. Just give her a break, OK? She has become an Oscar-winning director anyway.
animangamania 10 months ago
@animangamania I did give her break, and I did state that I felt that even though she wasn't that great, she wasn't the reason why Part III was the weakest of the Godfather Trilogy. I said that the reason I believed Part III was the "weakest" is because of every one's expectations. Part I & Part II are some of the greatest films of all-time, maybe even the greatest, so a lot of pressure was on the third--people wanted something as equal, if not better, than the first two--to be a masterpiece.
BBR1394 10 months ago
@BBR1394 That being said, it's impossible to measure up to such staggering expectations, so a lot of people (critics & audiences included) crucified the film for being "underwhelming". And like I said, "since Sofia was the weakest link, every one has criticized her for the "underwhelming" Part III", because she was certainly the weakest of a stellar cast, which isn't her fault considering her being forced to participate in the film, due to the absence of Winona Ryder. So, calm down.
BBR1394 10 months ago
@BBR1394 I know. I just wanted to complement your statement and try to tell everyone else not to put all the blame on Sofia Coppola.

I believe the VHS version of the godfather III had an uncut ending where michael was screaming for at least a minute. In this version, we see his screaming muted for some reason. You can obviously tell that his screaming was muted. I dont know why they did this. The original ending is so much better with michael's uncut screaming.
dingdang321 2 years ago

NOcomunismo92 2 years ago 5
yep...it's because Michael followed a path that was not like Vito's and even though Michael held the family together, he still commited terrible sins (killing his own brother for example....i can't even imagine Vito's face if he was alive and knew this)

Vito Corleone's death in Part I and this scene made me cry, seriously the Godfather Trilogy is legendary

@NOcomunismo92
brilliant film just seen it properly for the 1st time back to back , the saddest thing was the daughter getting shot
it was the 1st time someone innocent died in all 3 films , the 1st time death was portrayed as sad
swannyhead 1 year ago
@swannyhead Well, in Part I, Apollonia was innocent :). But yes, this film is a masterpiece of its time, although not as perfect as the first two, it is still a worthy second sequel.

But I felt sorry for Michael, well, basically throughout the entire movie. Al Pacino is awesome.

Godfather III is the drakest movie of the trilogy thats why ibelive that people dont like it but it's a classic
lilzander84 2 years ago 2
No, I think people don't like it because Coppola's performance was just bad. There's really no sugar coating it. Also, I think that the characterization was weaker than the first two films.
It wasn't a bad movie, it just wasn't as good as the first two. They set the bar so high that mediocre looked terrible by comparison.

great movie... I love this one just as much as the other two :)

Godfather III is kind of underated movie because Michael doesnt want to more power to hurt more people but to save his soul and make family legitimate. I think GodFather III is perfect natural sequel for a realistic story. For realistic, I mean, that "appears real". Only when you have dealed with internal demons for decades while performing as a godfather, and committing all kind of sins, only then, you can understand that money is not happiness and then have desire to turn to goodside of life.
ferrucciog 2 years ago 6
the movie is underrated because it is deeper then the other ones. It's more complicated and thus not everyone could understand it fully.
Omaralkemis 2 years ago 3
I think this was the most moving scene of the whole trilogy. Mary's death was very sad. She was so young. In the beginning Michael couldn't even scream. He needed some seconds to take a breath before letting out the scream. It was the only scene in the Godfather trilogy that almost made me cry. Al Pacino is one of the best actors ever, and I think this was his best role. I'm a huge fan of his.
DON MICHAEL CORLEONE FOREVER!
