Did this route last month and the scenery was magnificent. Saw some seals on one of the beaches next to the railway line at one point, but they scarpered back into the water when the train passed!
'You can feel yourself ageing' do remember there are quite a good few stops announced the train will not call at as they are request only and are rarely used!
Cheek! There is plenty to see and do in and around Wick. The journey's changed from the days when I used to visit regularly, the train always split at Georgemas then and one half went to Wick and the other to Thurso. Much more sensible!! although you had to make sure you were in the right carriage.
More sensible? how would you like a career driving Thurso-Georgemas Junction which is 10 minute all your life? don't think you would like it.... and thats the way the shifts used to work out
And the sooner those selfish folk round the Lairg loop stop stifling the Doroch bridge campaign, the sooner the journey will become a sensible 2.5hrs!
Absolutely correct. The train stops at Georgmas Junction, goes up the branch line to Thurso, returns to Georgmas Junction, then onwards to Wick. This is one of the maddest rail journeys in Scotland, the UK, possibly the world. You can actually feel yourself ageing. Can't say I was that impressed with the scenery either.
Wick isn't the top. Thurso is the northmost town in the UK, Wick is 20 miles down the eastern seaboard of Caithness. The train going north goes thru Georgemas to Thurso then back to Georgmas and down to Wick. It used to split at Georgmas so everyone got home quicker. It is an epically long journey!
@chillfmdude Yes Dunnet Head is the most northernly POINT but it's NOT a TOWN! Thurso IS a TOWN and if you check the map when you get home you will find that Thurso IS the most northernly TOWN whilst Dunnet HEAD is the most northernly POINT! Check out Google earth, it's great!
@neilpalmer400 There's been a mssive amount of archeological work at the castle and it's looking brilliant, they have tons more to do but the history of the building is getting clearer by the day. Harbour chippy is best in Wick and for cakes go to the Home Bakery.
Not really: it's a waste of a unit and FSR're currently stretched a bit. The number of passengers using the service does not warrant four carriages and the unit could be used elsewhere, like on the *much* busier Edinburgh to Glasgow corridor.
Anyway, it's only one stations it's not as though you're spending an extra hour or two going down a fifty mile branchline.

I would recommend going to wick very scienic and it is possible to hit 90 have seen in done but the line speed is 75.
tpws721 3 years ago
I went on this line last week and we definitely went above 75.
wdielwlairajmd 3 years ago
AM planning this journey to wick what it like? scenic would you recomend it to other people? do you hit 90? and whats more scenic this or kyle ta5*
gner125 3 years ago
It would be better to run two units and split them at the Junction, than to perform two reversals!
If 4 coaches are too much for this journey, how about using 153s?
wdielwlairajmd 3 years ago
We also don't have 153s :D And if Scotrail did aquire some, they'd probably be put to better use increasing capacity in the Glasgow area.

just over the yard i think LOL
gner125 3 years ago
not true at dingwall it goes up to 80mph and the drivers dont usually do the full journey some do but some change at lairg
gner125 3 years ago
It says Georgemas Junction Twice Lol
JF991 4 years ago
it stops at it twice
gner125 4 years ago
Yup. It reverses at Thurso, makes another stop at GJ then continues to terminate at Wick.
perman17 4 years ago
That's so stupid! It would be a much better idea to continue with 4-car sprinter running, where they split at Georgemas Junction!

it sounds like a good idea but pointless paying another driver to do a 10 min journey
gner125 3 years ago
u can hear folk laughing in the backgrnd at how much stations to stop at LOL
