A very interesting SMG you present here - I never knew of it up until right now. Obviously seems a postwar creation, marrying the MP-40, the Beretta and the PPS-43 into a very odd configuration. It's visibly longer than the MP-40, and looks quite openly a blowback system, firing from the open bolt. I would imagine that's why the cyclic action has to travel back further, to absorb the extra kick from the .30Tokarev round as it fires. Thankyou for sharing this interesting piece.
@sauragnmon It's a post war Yugoslavian hybrid that basically arose out of their interesting history with Germany and their new found "friendship" with Russia (which was questionable at the best of times). They didn't entirely like the PPS43, but they didn't want to copy the MP40, so they decided to go for the best of both worlds and use the Beretta as a donor for some of the parts. Worked relatively well, as you can see, but it never caught on anywhere else that I know of.
@Thatevilmidget If you are interested i can PM you a link to the Serbian forum with a very detailed comparison between PPS and Automat M49/57 (grandpa to the M56) and also tons of information and pictures on M56 as well..
@Luka464 I would be very interested to see that. I've had parts kits of the two before, but only ever owned a working example of the PPS43, so I don't know a whole lot about the M56. Never even seen an M49/57 before (heard the name mentioned before, but never actually saw them)
Special consideration given to at least a few canadians for mag restrictions. Interesting videos you posted recently, this yugoslav's bolt stroke looks kind of strange, very neat. Most of your stuff being way before my time, and impossible for me to own. Thanks for putting them up, serves a good educational purpose, little bit of a history lesson as well.
@MarstarCanada sorry y was the firing mechanism so far from clip must make the barrel tiny and therefore inaccurate I wouldn't have thought needed all the middle bit
@n2488 Please take a moment to examine the video. You will note that it fires from an open bolt, using a heavy breech block similar to the Beretta system. Such a system necessitates a fair amount of free travel for the heavy bolt to do its job. The magazine is therefore placed well forward and just to the rear of the barrel, making for an efficient and reliable system.

@robin6512 ugly version? both are ugly

@n2488 It's simply its design-- somewhat common during WWII submachine gun designs.
