GM cars are notorious for the starter swithces going out in these cars after they have been started thousands of times................try jumping the solenoid or do what I do and just put in a push button starter.
This same problem happened with my Chevy Blazer. If the battery is 100% charged, and still no go, I just whacked the starter motor with a 2x4, and let it roll in drive for a few feet. Repeat as nessicary and it should eventually start.
Basically, the teeth of the starter motor could easily be jammed up or seized with the flywheel gear. Hitting the starter and moving the car around (in drive or reverse) can unseize it.
If you have already hit the starter motor ALOT already, maybe that in itself has broken it.
And, like I said, I did this on a Chevy Blazer, a completely different car. I eventually get a new starter motor for around $60
Ok COANDCAIV,tell your friend to double his mileage...That's what my 70 GS455 has.I only changed the oil pump, water pump and fuel pump because it was parked for 3 years and it still pull its own weight, all 510 lbs/torque of it...
i would say the most reliable engines are honda and toyota engines..they easily last 250,000 to 300,000...no matter the year, my friend has a 92 corolla with 300,000 and it still runs...original trans and engine.
My sister's 89 buick has 226k on it, original engine and transmission. My 94 Chevrolet suburban has 220k on it, also original engine and transmission. Both will likely go over 300k. One of my college buddies will only buy VWs, he had a POS 82 Toyota for a while, it barely worked even when it was doing well. You can find good and s*** vehicles by any manufacturer any year.
They also blamed the dealership for "not taking care of her car." And just for that, the dealership was going to sue GM, but now idk what happened. It was awhile back. But you get what I'm saying I am sure.
Um yea. She had even sent all her repair bills to GM so they could look over all the repairs that were done to her cars. They didn't care. They said "her repair bills weren't enough in order for her to aquire a new car from them" when she had two 3" binders full of all the repair records she had kept. Oh well. We aren't buying anymore GM products.
starter solinoid. grab a screw driver put the key in run position be sure its in park. now go find where the starter is. jump the solinoid on it with the screw driver and see if it startes.
wtf. excuse me? GM products are more reliable than any other company. especially hrhe 3.8 v6 engines they had. onyl reason mine didnt run was casue of bad battery connections, and this car SAT for a longgg time, not becasue its GM.
It's so funny because you GM fanboys think the greatest excuse is that if I never owned one, then I don't need to be talking. But the thing is, that's gayass bullshit. Everyone I know whos owned GM products (except my dad) has had nothing but trouble. They have all had better luck with Kias! LOL My mom has owned 3 GM products and has had them all filed as lemons. GM won't give her another car because they like to act gay. She took great car of them too, and they said it was her fault.
well anyone can have their bullshit times with dealerships.
look im not tryign to defend gm as a whole. im jsut saying form what i have experience and/or seen, they have "some" decent vehicles out their. ANY dealership will rip u off. when my dad bought this car straight off the showroom floor, he leased it and after 4 years, he wqanted ot buy it and the dealershipp charged him 7 grand to buy it RIPP OFF. i like some over the oceon companies, like toyota, decent brands. running out of type
Some GM vehicles in particular year ranges are just plain bad, I do agree. But to generalize a whole company by a few bad years (which every manufacturer has had whether you want to admit it or not) . I buy used Buicks because there are millions of them (and other GMs with the same parts) on the road, even after 20+ yrs. The parts for these cars are dirt cheap because of that fact. If you know a mechanic, ask them about the GM 3800. Most will tell you it is one of the best engines built.
ok were was i, o right, i asume ur a japanese, kia, etc etc fan? their decent cars. by ur experience, GM sucked for u, so u move on, maybe gm will suck for me if i buy a new car from theirs. who knows.
I have never had a part on these cars (GM/Buick) cost as much as the parts for the Fords that I have, and the problems have been few and far between. I couldn't disagree with you more. If you know GM vehicles, the 3800 engine is one of the most reliable in the world with the exception of one early 90s generation with a bad intake gasket. It is a bad idea to summarize all vehicles by a particular manufacturer as failure prone and expensive.
Actually, even when GM vehicles have major internal engine problems after an idiot owner runs them out of oil or coolant they often still run. I have two of those. One has a 3800 buick engine and the other is a Chevrolet 350. Fords are more likely to sieze solid in either case, I don't know about foreign cars but if they use aluminum blocks I would assume they would also have issues. Sometimes older technology (cast iron & push rods) is more robust.
Hey whats up? First of all, I can't tell what is going on by the video 'cause all i can hear is the chime! If you stand off to the drivers side of the car in the front with the hood open, there might be some helpful sounds from the engine compartment. A click or clunk or buzz etc. Let me know if there is anything that you can hear in there when the key is turned or just post a video.
Not much new. Campus life isn't too exciting yet, midterms coming up :(
Too bad on the no start, first place to look is usually the selenoid or positive battery wire. Has the car been sitting since the battery gave out? Just an old battery?
hey when u had ur lesbare sitting over the winter, how bad did it get? (casue i think this buick is gotta sit out int he pakring lot during hte winter :s)
What do you mean? They get hard to start if the temp is under 30 degrees F, the wipers under the edge of the hood are a pain to chip ice out of.
If you are wondering if it will hurt the car any to sit parked (not started) all winter, the answer is no, just be sure you put some fuel stabilizer in the tank and check your air filter in the spring. Mice like to get in there.
I was surprised to hear a chime when you tried to start it up. I thought the 1985 Electra Park Avenue switched back to the scary buzzer which sounded like two buzzers sounding together until 1992. Could you kindly replace the chime with a scary buzzer from an older late 70's GM car?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Because a buzzer suits a Buick this size better than a chime. Plus, it has red interior and is smaller than the Caprice and Diplomat which means that Buick should have used a buzzer instead of a chime and I don't mean the electronic tone either. You can get a buzzer from an old mid-80's GMC truck.
Jac2Mac, I have to disagree with you on a buzzer. Many Ford LTD's and Caprices of this vintage, if I recall correctly, used a chime. I had a 1988 Corsica with the single-tone buzzer, and it drove me insane. They give me flashbacks to the old Chryslers with the god-awful twin-buzzer setup that was used into the 90's on some applications. I would much rather have a chime than a buzzer. Also, the Park Avenue was designed as more of a luxury than economy offering anyway for 1985, just my $0.02.
I should clarify that-I'm thinking of the first tone buzzer that was only for door open, the second buzzer ran only as a bulb check with key ON (brutal to hear first thing in the morning). As far as I can remember, my grandfather's old '78 Plymouth Fury wagon used that setup, K-cars, some cargo Caravans, and even up to the newer body style Ram vans (late 1990's). The Corsica used an electronic tone, which was, on my opinion, worse than any metallic buzzer, especially doing underdash repairs.
Which K-cars had that horrifying buzzer and which K-cars had the chime instead? Also, what years did the cargo Caravans use a scary buzzer instead of a chime?
anyways, pretty much for kseevis. im trying to keep this car original. and because this was at the time a LUXURY full sized sedan, the chime would suit it.
red interior? what does that have to do with anything?
anyways, ye its smaller then a "caprice" but omnly by a couple inches. the interior didnt lose any space, this car was fully redesgined. and at the time, this car would be top of a line and a huge change from carbs, and body styles.
since they changed the vehicle, why not upgrade the warning sound? the old park aves used a buzzer, but ebcasue they upgraded the overrall design, they thought it would be more "advanced" to use a chime.
i want to keep it oroginal. and as 6skeevis says, DO I REALLY WANT TO ANOY THE HECK OF MYSELF BY CANGING A CHIME TO A BUZZZER???
Okay, I like buzzers in older cars because they actually got you to fasten your seatbelts more often than a depressing chime and I wish that Buick only used a scary buzzer on the 1985-1990 Electra and the 1986-1991 LeSabre and Riviera, that's why you should change the chime for a buzzer.
why are u obsessed with this topic on whatever car has a chime or a buzzer? i swear almost eveyr car vid i see ur asking, does this car have a chime or buzzer. what is the point of ur interest in this subject?????
second, we all have the common sense to put seat belts on. chime or buzzer. id rathe rlisten to a stupid chime when i get into the car after work or waking up int he morning then making my day worse with an anoying BUZZZZZZZ
i absolutely agree with you randomrazr. this dude jac2mac asks about buzzers and chime on every car start video on youtube. it's ridiculous because it overflows the comments when hardly nobody cares about it. you're right, this guy belongs on yahoo answers or some blogs, not here. i wish youtube would ban him.

I don't feel that was a waranted comment, I would hope you treat people you don't know as peers rather than enemies. If I offended you in some way just let me know rather than being offensive yourself, especially in an open forum.
ye so uh, since no one realy looks at the description, im going to explain it here.
so we borrowed a brand spanking new battery from canadian tire. we threw it in. hooked it up. we got lights, wipers, all the toys galor, we turned the key, and nothing happened. i recall a posisable click noise but again. nothing. we tried numerous times. we waited. nothing. it ran after 5 years in june. but it didnt today.
well, it strated in june when we were try8ing to drive it onto the trailer, and it started after 5 + years as i said. i dnno what happened this time :S

I agree with the person below, it is most likeley a seized starter or electrical issue.

The starter might be engaged (and stuck) with the engine already, this will usually loosen it so it can retract, thereby allowing you to start it.

SUGGESTIONS?

How is the wiring to the starter?
You may also want to check and see if the connections at the starter are nice and clean. GOOD LUCK.
