point of fanned frets is for better intonation over variations in string width

and it is actually pretty natural feeling depending on where you prefer the Vertical fret

i prefer it at the 7th, and have no issues with bends, shred or barring chords

they probrably wernt producing regular 8 strings at the time, so this was normal for about all 8 string guitarists.

the point of fanned frets is because most of the time, 7 or 8 string guitars dont have a long enough neck, so they fan the frets so that they can play 8 string stuff, and have it all be in tune without super-cranking your bridge. :]

why are the frets crooked?

Because of the big range. It's an 8-string with a high A-string. The A-string is so thin that it would break if the scale length was normal. So therefore it has fanned frets (as they call it). Means that each string have different scale lenght. (from nut to bridge saddle). So thats why the frets are like that, so the guitar intonates correctly on each string. The high A-string have the shortest scale lenght of course so it doesn't break, so that you can bend without breaking it.

Rusty has skills, and a band, and all kinds of respect. Personally, I feel he has a way to go to be like the greats ala Becker, Friedman, etc. But clearly this is old. His Shawn Lane tribute song is beautiful. you wouldn't believe it. He's got it in him, this is just some excersizes. Petrucci plays some non musical crud warmup stuff that is fun to watch but sounds ass also. Cooley has some nice runs in this. Not sure what he is trying to do in between though hehe.

Worst Vibrato I have ever heard, no feel at all, and bores me to death in about 2 seconds. Any monkey can get a metronome out and do picking excersizes 8 hours a day, but not many can write a melody worth remembering. This is garbage.

The frets are slanted to accommodate the optimum scale length for each string. A low B would be really floppy with a 22" scale, and you can't tune a high up up to pitch at a 27" scale...unleess you get Gerry Goodmans Octave 4 Plus strings!
