.....great upload....so sad in many ways....a good series of books on the matter is the Byzantium Trilogy by Lord John Julius Norwich.....this is so well done, maybe because we know the tragic ending.....
This Constantinople begins with ancient pagan rome ending with apollo's springs drying up ushering a new age of Christianity, and ending in May 28, 1453 with the "Mary" taking back the image and marking the end of that era. It's interesting seeing a parallel on how the pagan world ended there, and how the "Christian" empire was defeated in the narration. The defeat of Russians to Communism and Ottoman empire in WW1 in 1917 probably closes the final nova roma final chapter.
I find myself watching this series a second time and am actually getting more out of this. May watch it again a third time or many times over to see how much I can extract out of this. The awe inspiring music, narration, all make for a captivating experience. Visiting Turkey, Greece, (I'd like to visit Syria too if it were a democracy) would definately be on my bucket list.
Thanks for uploading these John Romer 'Byzantium' programs! I am a BIG fan of Romer, have been for a long time, but its so hard to get hold of his stuff in the UK. Being one of our finest TV historians and archaeologists, I find this strange! Thanks again.
