Me understanding the Limit Definition, is like trying to persuade an atheist that god exists. I've been applying this for a decade now, but I never really got it, and I'm sure that 90% of calculus people don't either. XD
Here's a way of thinking about a limit: suppose you are the variable x, and the function is a robot that moves in a certain way depending on how you move. Suppose if you move to a point A, the robot moves to a point B. Does the robot get closer to B as you get closer to A, no matter HOW you approach A? if so, then then the limit of the robot as you approach A is B. If not (say, you zigzag to A, but the robot approaches a point C), then the limit is NOT B.
Why is it so difficult for me to listen to a bald man? I'm listening but I just wanna put a bullet through his head. Its like he is talking but he is eating his own heart at the same time.
thank you so much for that message at the beginning. i was freaking out thinking i was going to bomb this course, so its good to know alot of people struggle with these
"here don't worry if this is your first time with calculus, I will explain it easy for you" (begin jumping to solve an equation without first defining to the audience what you mean by certain terms) Fail teacher is fail
thank you so much sir for uploading such a great and helpful video for me and for all those who have little or great difficulties in understanding the limits.i am very grateful to you and may god bless you for helping me.take care.
The limits concepts require a more intuitive and lay explanation first, before going into the robust and rigorous descriptions. Some numeric trials with the value of ´a´ approaching 2, like 1.99, 1.999,1.9999 or 2,00001 and calculating the value of the function which would approach 5 would help students to grasp the limit concepts. Also, the prof must make sure that every students observe the cancellation of the (x-2) factor.
thank you so much sir for uploading such a great and helpful video for me and for all those who have little or great difficulties in understanding the limits.i am very grateful to you and may god bless you for helping me.take care.
lol sorry but the style you teach has no difference than the one we learn in college. you just jumped into limit without explaining the basics. what is epsilon? what is lambda? why do they have to be smaller/bigger than some values and why are we dealing with absolute value? what is the limit and what does it do? you fail at teaching mr.
With all due respect, if you're a COLLEGE student you're already supposed to know what a delta epsilon is, what a lambda is and so on. That's just my opinion, though.
true, they are letters from greek alphabet but the other things I say still hold. go and see UMKC's channel on youtube and see how calculus should be taught.
@SlaytanicSeries your exactly right but the problem comes when teachers at the junior high and high school level never bother to show it to you among other things that they assume you should already know when in fact you have never been presented with the material
Yeah! In my way of perspective, I think that every time students get into a new subject, teachers should not assume that the students have knowledge of the subject. They should review it anyway just in case. =)
it is amazing how a teacher can make a very easy lecture sound hard , and how other teachers can make a very hard lesson look easy and quite understandable, i want this man to teach us in our college.
@avilesnba They are just variables. Epsolen and Delta are letters from the Greek Alphabet. If it helps you should think of it as X and Y (i.e. letters in the English alphabet). If you are wondering why we use Greek letters, its because they invented a lot of the math you are learning.
Hey, I'm starting a blogsite for those who need help with Calculus. The url is mathematicalwizard(.)blogspot(.)com Thumbs up this, to help others out. Thanks!
or just take things slower. Pre calc really doesn't introduce you to any of these concepts. Read up a little bit on limits and it will be pretty easy.
I have a good business calculus teacher, but you sir make this material so much easier to interpret. Keep up the great work - you have a gift at teaching math!
@hehsaan when you say the expression is "indeterminate," it means it has or more than 2 variables (got that from wiki lol). he says it's undefined (which is the correct term because no point exists at x = 2) at x = 2 which is true since, like you said, it will be 0/0.
@thatguywitcalculator you're right, that's known as an "indeterminate" equation, right? it turns out that indeterminate forms are special cases of undefined expressions. thanks!
thank you. i just took an advanced class on statistics and probability. the prospectus didn't "tell" me that i had to have knowledge of integral calculus. this helps a lot :D
I think this is good, I'm in 8th grade and I'm tired of being held back by my class so I'm schooling myself outside of school. I'm having trouble finding out what epsilon and delta equal. Are they just variables or do they have a value to them?
They vary depending on the function. Essentially, the idea is as follows: you pick an arbitrary epsilon. Then you find a delta such that the definition for limits holds.
Given that the definition must hold for all epsilon greater than zero, it is often necessary to make delta a function of sorts that depends on epsilon (or other constants that are present in the function; in some cases, letting epsilon equal delta will suffice).
I'm getting it! Thanks a bunch! Though, I have a problem, my professor will NEVER give us the equal number, (like 5, in this example) he told us to find it intuitively. Using this exercise as an example, how can I find 5?

Start with something much more basic, like "what is the limit of x*2 when x approaches 2", then move on to something like the limit of "1/x as x approaches infinity ", and so on.

there's a lot of old man- young male relations thats going around and it doesn't involve only teacher to student incidences, it can be anyone and this isn't exactly earth breaking news to most people
this video is to help with calculus, the teacher i'm guessing, can't fondle with you since its only a video and i fail to see the need for you to make such a crude remark
actually its a good idea... uhm maybe better... i guess..but you must go to basic before here...right now we are studying it in school to prepare in college. im also 15 but usually i don't listen to my teacher if he teach a new lesson like this...but no worry i'll just watch Mathtv anytime i want.. lolx... hehe,,, ^^ \m/

candychandelier 2 years ago
@candychandelier
You would apply the limits to each variable separately after applying some operation to prevent the denominator from going to zero as x approaches 2.
For this problem, I suggest dividing every term by x^2 or, as done above, factoring the equation and removing common factors.

there's a lot of old man- young male relations thats going around and it doesn't involve only teacher to student incidences, it can be anyone and this isn't exactly earth breaking news to most people
this video is to help with calculus, the teacher i'm guessing, can't fondle with you since its only a video and i fail to see the need for you to make such a crude remark

Depends, have you already completed College Algebra, and trig? If not, you'll find calculus extremely difficult.
