  • Can you do an update to this? What are your thoughts now, a few years later?

  • To top it all off, one can have it reversed if they so choose.

  • Thank you so much for your honesty. I am currently waivering between gastric bypass and the lapband. You have helped me make my choice.

  • Hi ! I'm a 26 yrs old guy weighing 330 pounds. I've strictly been adviced by my doctors to get the gastric bypass.. Seeing the success of all the people with their weight loss, I was pretty much convinced in the beginning. But seeing the long term side effects and complications, I've changed my mind now and will be considering other options for weight loss.. Could you suggest me anything which is healthy and effective.. You're really a very strong lady.. Much respect !! God bless u..!

  • I like your videos. I like that you're honest! :) And I love that you're so positive.

  • I admire your off the cuff videos. This is your reality and you get the right to speak it. If other's have a hard time hearing them, they can always hit the back space button.

  • @laravia18 I appreciate it. I have been floundering about starting again, I mean, this was two years ago. And... I bite my tongue.

  • Your seizure, were they due to your low blood sugar?

  • @jawhara2013 No. When tested during a seizure, my sugar was never low.

  • It is so interesting to hear you speak. I am a 54 year old woman who is 6 stone overweight with several co-morbidities. I am being put forward for gastric surgery and have asked for a band as opposed to roux en y .They are trying to persuade me to have the bypass. I am researching as much as I can and I'd like to thank you for your honest account.

  • You are the most brave and amazing person! I give you SOOO much credit. I am 6yrs post op (RNY)... young (36) and now- collecting disability cuz I cant even work anymore. Lots of issues. Would love to chat with u sometime. I'm new to this YouTube-not sure how to contact u. Will try your site! Just wanted u to know I admire you SO much for this video!!!! Try to plug your ears and "la la la la la la" through all the negativity/haters... Amanda, IL... YES! I CHOSE IT TOO!@!

  • You say "who cares how you look if you're dead" and fail to see that so many are dying b/c of obesity. Maybe you were one of the very few "happy" obese women in the world. What about being a 25 year old shut-in because of your obesity? Wanting so badly to participate in life - to travel, go to the beach, ride a bike, date, and then losing the will to live because every day is filled with pain. It's not just "vanity", even when a patient does it just to look better, there is a social aspect.

  • I think she is just sharing her perspective - that's allowed isn't it? She isn't judging anyone - its HER perspective- freedom of speech - she isn't condemning others' decisions

  • thanks for this video! i was one of the ones who was freaked at the 1st video! lol! but, it did what you were trying to do. it caused me to slow down and really think of all my options and to make a decision based upon what was truly best for me. and, right now, i am happy with my decision to go rny. but, thanks for being brave and saying what is apparently, very unpopular to say.

  • I just found your videos, great answer!

  • I've had the surgery, for both health and vanity related reasons. Vanity - well, that's a simple word when you consider all the emotional issues that come with being over-weight.

Would I do it again? Yes, I'm one of the lucky ones who has had minimal side-effects. But for me, all the other non-surgical methods had failed so surgery was my last resort, not my first.

Go into the surgery with your eyes open - nothing comes without a price.

  • This video contradicts your other one. Make up your mind!

  • Protein malnutrition? No one has ever died from protein malnutrition. Point is if you can lose weight on your own and keep it off (all 2% of you obese people who are able to achieve this! Go you!) you won't have any deficiencies. But for the 98% of the rest of us will never lose 150lbs & keep it off taking vitamins for the rest of our lives is a miniscule price to pay. If you disagree and would rather stay fat forever & yo-yo diet then stay away from the surgery. You're not ready yet at all.

  • No I didnt but I have seen you on a lot of websites relating to obesity help sites and selling your seminars abour bypass surgery!!

  • And what I want to know is why is Melting Mama still going round doing seminars promoting Bypass Surgery?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  • You should have been told that lack of B12 was one of the side effects. You were obviusly not very well informed before you had your opertion

  • Comment removed

  • Yes I agree you are a little crazy but Thank you for telling what has gone on with your body and health. But are you tell us that every problem you are having came from the surgery? People need to also know that there are much greater consequences of being over weight than what can come from the surgery! IN MOST CASES not all because everyone's body is different.

People also need to make sure that there mental process can handel this change with there body and life. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!!

  • Excuse me?

  • Thank you. Please keep posting...this is so encouraging not just for gastric bypass patients. I've been feeling terrible about a decision I made to have knee surgery and believe it or not your post has helped me. Thanks.

  • You are such a strong woman. I've been doing research on gastric bypass because my aunt just passed away from complications of it on July 12, 2008. I wish I would have known more about the surgery before she had it so I could have helped her more. Your video was informative and intresting.

  • I felt your honesty was helpful. People don't realize how serious gastric bypass surgery is. I went through hell. I nearly died and should have. I have had almost every complication there is. I am on TPN through a central line in my chest because I'm unable to eat and drink enough to sustain myself. Your story and others like you help me see that I'm not alone and I hope people considering the surgery don't take it with a grain of salt.

  • Thank you for your honesty and candor. All of us need to hear the "good" and the "bad". Basically, you're advising us to be doing our research and thinking very hard about our decisions and the ramifications that could result. We all must deal with our own choices and your video was a very candid reminder.

  • does anyone on Utube have the grastric sleeve instead of lapband or bypass. I would not do the bypass but know of someone who had the sleeve. Best thing he ever did, hes as healthy as an Ox now. I want to get lapband surgery and the waiting list is so long.

Im in australia and i hear more about lapband and sleev and few people talk about the bypass operation as oppose to those in USA

  • i am going to get a sleeve in Colombia, they have some of the best doctors, but what i was told and reashearched (ALOT) is that the sleeve is a better alternative for younger ppl becasue you will still have the intestine that absorbes vitamis and all that good stuff also if a woman becomes pregnant it is easier to manage the baby nutrition concerns....im spacred of the BAND im not the type of person that likes foregn things inside of me, but i will try to post something once i get it

  • I agree with what you are saying, but your affects are true... so for others who are thinking that you should've held back here and there... Our affects are going to be different...Get over it and live life.. Keep up the good work Beth

  • Yes, I understand what you are saying, but you have to hear it from others who have lived through it...which makes it real. I agree with Serramist - we so much want an "easier" out, but there isn't one. Do the work (eat healthy/exercise) or....deal with the health isssues that come with the surgery. I also have a very good friend who did it (I couldn't believe she thought she needed it)...and she has been severely ill ever since. At this point for me it would not be worth it.

  • You Inspire Me :D

    Your a strong Women!

No im dead serious you realy inspired me!

your making the negetive to the positve!

    your awesome! keep it up!!;D

  • i have done all my homework on gastric bypass surgery and complications so i know what im getting into. I am doing it for my health cause of the diabetes and leaking kidneys . but thank you for the reality video cause people should keep reasearching it before they make a decision

  • After all the problems you said you have, these are ones I have also read about that are complications, My dr said if you get that way you can be reversed. Is the reversal something you have seen in anyone else or have talked to your dr about?

This is a concern that I am gathering information about for doing my surgery.

Thanks for your information and candid approach

  • Right on gal... You know I have my LapBand blog and I scared some people with my video of my first fill, lol. You take the good with the bad. You are helping people, that's all that frickin matters. lol.

  • You did more than scare people.

You have people telling me!! that they are thrilled they got the RNY because it's so much easier.

  • Oh well... that's why there are different choices in surgeries.

  • Indeed...

  • I have had two doctors tell me that people just don't know the complications that can arise four or five years after gastric bypass. I would be better of trying to lose weight without the drastic dicision to cut part of my body away. Thanks for telling the aftermath of the surgery...what people don't want to hear.

  • i think your video was great and i'm glad u are being real. you give the facts and it's up to people to decide what they want to do with the info but they should be very happy that someone is willing to tell their story. i'm sick of those people on tv that say only the good things about the bypass because the doctor that paid for it is sitting right there. awesome video 5 stars.

  • Can't you remember how it felt to be fat? To know that everyone was judging you the second they saw you? I would trade some vitamin infusions for being thin any day!

  • But, for death?

  • But you're not dead! You're very much alive. Very fit, very attractive. I'm really sick of being fat. I think I'm strongly considering the gastric bypass even with its dangers.

  • I know I was being dramatic. :) And thanks for the compliment.

But, and I do know it's more likely I will get hit by a truck than to drop dead of my issues stemming from the bypass, but still... it really stinks sometimes, because I really want to feel better.

  • o yea and i just turned 20 so still young and i really dont know if it was the best choice i could have made but its done.

  • your right i did it because of looks and im about 3 months out and i wish i didnt do it i dont take my protien i forget my vitimans i mean it was just an easy fix solution for me and ur so right in everything u say so now i have to deal with it but anyway just wondering when u started this surgery were u taking ur vitamins like u were sopposed to and this still happened or were u like me that jus doesnt DO it.

  • OMG...I thought you reminded me of Kate too, even before I read the comment below. You not only have the same voice tone, haircut, etc...but you are very direct like she is. You say what you feel and you say it how you want to say it. I'm a huge fan of Kate...so that means I guess I'm a fan of yours too. :)

  • have you ever wathced that show on tlc- called jon and kate plus eight....OMG, when i first saw ur video you remind me of her so much haircut and voice exactly!

  • Wow. You guys are harsh.

  • I think its great that there are people like you who have a more realistic approach. Its often easier to just listen to totally upbeat ones, but there needs to be balance. You seem really well adjusted, i guess like you said you just get on with it. We all know the risks but seeing someone who has had problems kinda brings it home. I suppose some people find that a negative thing, personally i don't. I wish more would vlog this kinda stuff xx

  • we had to live with consequences when we were big also from having to buy two airline seats to acid reflux to chaffing to the whole social stuff...you are right, we are who we are and we do the best to live with it...I use to think I couldn't live without sweet coke...how wrong was i??

  • Hey now.

I sat in one airline seat.

    I drank Diet Coke.

    I pretended. LOL.

    We do what we can.

  • I for one really appreciate your honesty. Please don't edit.

    Virginia

  • OMG I am also still 300 pounds in my head! Even after 5 years, its just the way it is.

Loved this Video! Today is my 5 year anni of WLS and I wonder if I could be doing better.. but I AM OKAY, too!

  • Happy Anniversary. I will always been 300 lbs. in my head. Always.

  • You get what your given it's all how you use it.

You avoided a lot of other illnesses by having the surgery of course. Diabetes among other things. You still have a chance of having a heart attack I think but well you know. And during this video I just put it together in my head. You have a sense of humor of a fat chick.

  • G,

It's because I am a fat chick. In my head, I am 300 lbs.

  • I know. Ross Mathews (Ross the intern, tonight show) said once on one of his video blogs (Ro and Ro show look it up on youtube) that he was uncomfortable during his weight loss until a certain point then when he went past that weight he was uncomfortable again. I would like for you to watch that and tell me (or us) ur thoughts. And it's ok to call me Jodi in the comments section. or anytime.

  • Whew.
