Solar flares happen every 11 years but every 100 years or so we have a big one like the one in 1859. If one like 1859 was to happen again we can expect to see this disaster. @shadowofthenacho Even if by chance they did shut the grid down, the flare would destroy transformers and sensitive power plant computer equipment so it would be moot. Our transformers here in the US are, for the most part, made oveseas and we don't have enough spares for most and no spares for others so assuming the US is the only one hit even that scenario would leave us down for years without power until we could get more transformers built and shipped in.
