Manifest Destiny was an Imperialist Doctrine which promoted westward expansionism and basically it was a very racist idea to think that it was ok to steal land away from people, because it was thought that those people were inferior to white people.
see if blacks werent taken to america as slaves would all the black americans today be where they are now? or would they be toy soldiers over in africa for many dictators to piss about with in wars and so on?
@MrJambones OR did the slave trade and colonialism create false borders and rob a continent of its resources which created the conditions for internal African dysfunction? I think my answer is better than yours.
@MrJambones And yes Jefferson did take them out and according to some sects of Christianity would condemn Mr. Jefferson to the pits of hell for all of eternity.

@GoBack2sleepSheep Hold on here....I think people are misconstruing what I meant. I don't "hide" the unseemly aspects of American history. Far from it. I demand more from my students.
If Manifest Destiny had been coined or implemented by any non-white peoples of the earth, it would be roundly regarded as one of the Grestest Moments in Human history--but since it was undertaken by whites, it is regarded as evil incarnate.
Fuck political correctness, right in it's greasy, unwashed, bongo-slapping, dreadlock-sporting, patchouli-drenched, self-loathing, racist, drum-circle-dwelling ASS
I think you might be a racist. I would check it out, if you do have this disease, there are treatments. The very real consequences of war and conflict should be explored and dealt with honestly, blind patriotism does good for no one. Being honest of ones past actions, in my opinion, is the very essence of Americanism. So how bout "f*ck" racism. I have a feeling though arguing with you will be like arguing with the toaster oven. I need to go drum and fix my dreads.
@hughesDV Really? does the term "racism" even have any validity anymore? it is a charge clearly only ever leveled at whites, and those who bandy the term about freely almost certainly feel that either A. ONLY whites are capable of being "racist" or B. If people of other races do hate whites, they are totally "justified" in doing so for the past "crimes" of white men.. I'd say that for these reasons the very word "racism" is racist. Also--aren't you tired of being one of those who tries to reduce
@oldstock1607 ALL of human history into a scathing indictment and character assasination of the European male? shouldn't history be more than that? Doesn't that approach make the study of history meaningless? If the point in studying history is merely to point fingers and attempt to make all people with white skin and penises hang their heads in shame, then who cares? Seriously--the 40 year reign of leftists in history teaching is coming to a close. you had a good run. time to give it back
I am pretty sure you started off the discussion with a non-white - white dividing line. You sir, brought up race, not I. The past IS filled with racism, an honest discussion of the past should be allowed with out people claiming foul when facts are being discussed. Calling Manifest "the greatest moment in history" is not factual. Perhaps economic nationalism is good but the genocide and butchering should not be ignored. My observations are not married to my whiteness.
@hughesDV Indeed. But if you are a history teacher, as I (formerly) am, you certainly know what I'm talking about. Last year I even had a recently-graduated MA candidate admit to me that they viewed their position as a professor of history as merely a pulpit to indoctrinate impressionable youngsters with their leftist agenda. So let's not ignore the elephant in the room. Revisionist history is absolutely destroying the factual basis of history, and the discipline is treated as though it is
@oldstock1607 somehow fair game to complete reinterpretation. The examples I can cite you are too numerous to ignore. I could literally make a career of exposing revisionist history for the fraud that it is. Indeed, the past IS filled with racism, but don't we both know that calling a 19th century American politician a "white supremacist" is also the equivalent of calling water "wet?" Modern history teaching is nothing more than what I described earlier, a left-wing orgy of european male-bashing
I just think sometimes those who lob those charges of propaganda are just clinging to their own bias. I do not "make-up" facts. My job is not to indoctrinate but to allow kids to become independent thinkers. So that encompasses reading the National Review AND Howard Zinn. To ignore either is a biased. Its hard to dress up ugly history, so those who want to carry their notions of US exceptional-ism are engaging in their own political correctness. It revisiting not revision.
I would assume you are bias. What if I felt that way about the text , should I just avoid the facts. Ill wait until the ends of the earth for you to point out one fact in Peoples History which is not researched and validated. The only difference b/w me and you kind sir is my willingness to confront my bias. You seem to wear your on your sleeve. Any how, to each our own path, I guess. Best of luck in your world of old stock, I'll be educating the new stock.
@hughesDV I was mostly kidding about Zinn. Certainly, everything in "that book" as I call it, is valid. But it is also very much a screed against the European male. I guess my problem with revisionist history is that it is all based on presentism--the imposition of 20th and 21st century morality onto events from the past--anachronistic at best, complete arbitrary subjectivity at worst..Rvisionism is also heavily reliant on the besmirching of formerly vaunted American heroes. Since revisionist
@oldstock1607 history also seems to ONLY scrutinize the historical "crimes" of the white male, meanwhile ignoring the historical "crimes" of non-white conquerors, it also smacks of "racism." As you and others strive to teach revisionist history to the upcoming generations, I will continue to go against the grain, to impart upon them that the founding of the United States WAS a noble undertaking and a glorious chapter in the annals of human history. Just as you or I never enslaved a black man,
@oldstock1607 or "murdered" a native American, there is no reason to teach young, impressionable whites to loathe their origins. It is counterproductive, and truly a step in the psychological browbeating of modern academia. It is a crime in itself, and I truly hope that history rememberes it as such. I will leave you with the words of that great bastard of history, Christopher Columbus--"Nothing that results in human progress is ever achieved with unanimous consent, and those who are enlightened
Your fatal flaw is assuming we are not teaching their noble pursuit of a true democracy and human rights. Teaching the murk in the waters of history is not to condemn it but to shine light and understand it. I teach everything with context, I am not teaching to hate anyone. Not teaching the facts is actually quite biased. How is not teaching a massacre or the fact Washington owned slaves helpful for those trying to understand our complex past.
Shining light is a pursuit for today not yesterday. We can hold up the greatness of Americas past and her weaknesses without discrediting the actions of our forefathers and mothers. Without a truth we have Michelle Bachmanns claiming our forefathers fought slavery with everything they had until it was extinguished. How is that helpful to developing critical thinking citizens who can reflect on the past and make wise decision about our future. I love my country, as you do too.
@oldstock1607 It's great that one can selectively navel gaze ,and 'airbrush' out those despotic historical events carried out by an the oppressor against hapless peoples. He is talking here of 'Manifest Destiny' and the use of this Doctrine to justify so much misery for so many. With the likes of President James Monroe [The Monroe Doctrine] later refined by likes of President James K Polk ,and so many outhers we see this transposed to outher shores in more recient times.nothing changes
@malachy1847 One glimpse at your page and your country of origin lead me to believe that you are a hard left-winger and that no amount of evidence or persuasion will ever convince you that the U.S. is anything more than an unmitigated evil. Read my latest post. I'm not "airbrushing" anything in my classes.
@oldstock1607 Question Why have many of your'Youtube Friends' Gernan military signs like S.S. and Swatikas up on their Profiles. Some even calling themselves .White Pride!.. Regarding my own Politics if you must know im a Republican! and my Country of origin has a fully functioning Constitutional parlimentary system in place with election coming up in two weeks time the prospect of which will Joint Government of Christian Democrats / Social Democrats sharing power on behalf of the people
@malachy1847 I usually don't "screen" friend requests--especially not by avatars. And a "republican" in Ireland, and a "republican" in the U.S. are two very different things. I see a lot of ugliness coming from Ireland....support for the P.L.O. and Arafat's criminal ass, support for Hamas and Hizbollah, support for Islamic radicals, hatred of the U.S., and yes, in WW2, support for the Nazis. I understand that you people have your own history of oppression, but it is time to let it go. American
@oldstock1607 Indians aren't--for the most part--even interested in improving their situation. They are perfectly content in the role of "victim." Do you respect that? All an American Indian has to do to get a P.h.d. is WANT ONE and SHOW UP. they don't even have to have aptitude. They will just be HANDED one. Yet how many do that? very, very, very, few. And remember....Ireland is Catholic. Muslims hate you too. They're always talking about assassinating the pope.
Being a Brit I had never heard about Manifest Destiny until I heard Stewie shout it in an Family guy video. I know us Brits have done some shocking things but Manifest Destiny is a black mark from on America, my point of view. Its a shame that its still prevalent in America this this blessed people nonsense.
@doctorpapaya I feel sorry for you. I can't speak for anyone else but I chose to respect every race/culture...we're all human at the end of the day. I left that comment 3 months ago and have since moved on to bigger better things. Take it easy.
Okay you spend the first 3 minutes bashing America while at the same time saying you don't want to do that. This isn't teaching - it's liberal theology 101. FYI Jefferson was quite religious, even arranging Sunday mass in the Capitol.
Nor the countless Americans who lived their existence in poverty and disease. Looking backwards and finding morals and lessons in uniquely American. I would assume you think you are a better American dictating the telling of History according to your view. Shall I ignore the plight of those who suffered in order to pump up patriotism.... I thought that was the evil socialism you warn us against. I railed against the gov. Not America. Big difference.
I am not guilty nor do I feel guilty, truth is truth. Should Germany not teach the Holocaust b/c people might feel guilty. NO b/c they didn't do, its just a dark stain in their history that allows them to move on and learn. Same is true here, many of the victims of the gilded age were white. White farmers, immigrants, regular workers, so this has nothing to do with race, it just seems thats where conservatives go right away. Very classy on the hair comment, you must be proud. Best of luck.
Manifest Destiny is one of the proudest time periods in American history. It's basically the reason for America as we know it today. The Gilded Age is the reason we have any kind of economy right now. You just compared the US westward expansion to the Holocaust. Great way to start a weekend.
No sir I compared it to a concept of not ignoring negative pasts. Manifest Destiny had long term positive consequences for the US economy, I understand that, economic nationalism factually created jobs and built a foundation for the future. Teaching about the negative fallout, the Chinese Exclusion Act, genocidal and racist policies, nativism, racism is also factual. By teaching history I am allowing them to understand actions and consequences. It seems like you my may be the blind partisan.
OK, more mud throwing..... ouch, I am boring. But like all of your comments you lack any factual argumentation. (It was a proud period. You hate America. You are negative. You think westward expansion is the holocaust, Your hair is messy. You are boring) Like so many political "experts" out there you have failed to address any of my arguments which were based on factual historical lines of reason.
You sir have said nothing that a big bag of wind would not be able to say as well.
Just wondering if any of your thoughts come outside the dittohead world? I read the National Review, the Wall Street Journal and watch all the cable stations to get multiple perspectives. Tell me the last time you read Zinn or Salinky Or would exposing yourself to other opinions make your mind implode?
Why must you attack with such negativity? Why can't you disagree with some sense of academic honor. Throwing charges of hating my country is a hell of a way to create dialogue. Best wishes
Hay, read your history books and make sure you are getting an acqurate account and then get over it. @doctorpapaya I feel sorry for you. I can't speak for anyone else but I chose to respect every race/culture...we're all human at the end of the day. I left that comment 3 months ago and have since moved on to bigger better things. Take it easy.

Manifest Destiny is based on white dominance...is this supposed to be ok?
joshtj44 1 year ago
@joshtj44
No, it is not OK, just part of the fabric of our history. We teach the good, the bad and the ugly.

@joshtj44 yeah, it is.

Okay you spend the first 3 minutes bashing America while at the same time saying you don't want to do that. This isn't teaching - it's liberal theology 101. FYI Jefferson was quite religious, even arranging Sunday mass in the Capitol.

Sorry I could not find a way to make to turn the killing of Indians and Mexicans and expansion of slavery into a rosy pretty story.

Welcome to White Guilt 101.
By the way, if you're gonna be on camera, comb your F'n hair.

Dittopost 2 years ago
No sir I compared it to a concept of not ignoring negative pasts. Manifest Destiny had long term positive consequences for the US economy, I understand that, economic nationalism factually created jobs and built a foundation for the future. Teaching about the negative fallout, the Chinese Exclusion Act, genocidal and racist policies, nativism, racism is also factual. By teaching history I am allowing them to understand actions and consequences. It seems like you my may be the blind partisan.
hughesDV 2 years ago
okay but your introduction is overwhelmingly negative. That's the most important part because most people won't make it past that snooze-fest.
Dittopost 2 years ago

Best wishes
