Sad but true...the disproportionate displays speaks volumes about priorities. I enjoyed this video. I look forward to viewing the remainder of your catalogue.
You are indeed fortunate to have a multi-topic bookstore in your town! After several years, our Dalton's gave up the struggle, and we are now left with only a baptist book store(It's So.ILL.).Dalton's used to irk me because they listed monotheistic faiths as RELIGION,and anything else as NEW AGE,including Buddhism...?!So to Amazon and ebay I go for a varied selection.BB!
OMFG! how many religious s**t is there. I think christianity is fiction itself. I mean it's like reading a dry fantasy and boring fat a** book that blows.
It is a huge difference, especially when you scan the titles in the science section and see they contain subjects like astronomy, ornithology, medicine and paleontology all thrown in together!
At least, from the photos at the end, books on atheism are availlable to those that want them. Thats something/
The Bible being in the non-fiction section always bugged me. It seems all creation texts are in non-fiction. They can't all be right and I feel confident none of them are.
Seems like a typical American bookstore - although your religious/christian section seems to be a bit bigger... but... look at the state you live in. =/
i had this same experience not long ago, i was horrified that a bookstore could be so steeped in religious horseshit. i still can not find a copy of the god delusion anywhere.
Try your public library. Book stores generally only stock what they know will sell without too much shelf life. Otherwise you can always order a copy through any major bookstore.
Yup. I'm very lucky, there is a bookstore in Bray, Co. Wicklow, called DuBray and it actually HAS a science section. Not as big as I'd like it, but it's there. There are plenty of book stores in Ireland that don't even have that.
It just all depends on where you live. I live in San Francisco and they have a very small section for Christianity and religion at most places. The science is about the same as yours. Sometimes smaller.
Good video. I hope they devote the same amount of shelf space to Santa, Imaginary Friends (and Imaginary Friends Fiction), and the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
They should have put a section on child genital mutilation together with the religious sections.
As for your assumption-it's hard to say. When I lived in a small town, my friends and I were assaulted, harassed at our jobs, and threatened by the cops for being Wiccan. I've never heard of an Atheist being accused each time someone gets hurt or some weird graffiti appears on a building. People are afraid of what they don't understand. No one thinks you kill children because you're an atheist. Not that Atheists don't get shit-they do. But people don't fear Atheists-they fear witches.
here in the Dallas suburbs they have 4 rows of religious stuff and it is right across from the Gay and lesbian section, and science is less that one 8th as large
I tried to do the same thing in my local bookstore but got shut down.
I'm reminded of the Geo W Bush quote, "...you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda." Hmmm...some truth! So no atheist books, no alternative religions? Some kind of faith? I don't know...they might burn witches in those parts....might burn atheists too. Indeed it is pitiful that religion takes up so much more space than science and philosophy there.

people are going to stock what sells in their stores. if more books on science are to but placed there then first they must have more demand.

You hit the nail on the head. The biggest problem with America is that we are forgetting science.

wow, thought this was going the other way at first, like "these crazy atheists are ruining my town"-like... phew.
Good vid - could be chopped down to 2 minutes though. Great ending - I was giddy when I saw two books that are on my desk right now. Well done!

But the future is, I think, longer than the past. And what would life be without a lifelong Challenge. ;)
