Not bad. Your slightly harsher accent reminds me of Bill McClaren, kind of a Borders accent ( I say kind of as some Borders accents can be a bit Geordie-ish as well).
Good enough, but really not great pal. Vowel sounds are far too exaggerated, the 'soft spoken' (whatever that means) isn't authentic sounding at all. Glasgow accent isn't right either. Don't get me wrong, it's good but it's incredibly generalised and sounds to be a stereotypical english take on a Glasgow accent. In reality it's actually just as soft spoken as the Edinburgh accent. You sound like the big man in Chewin the Fat.
But... you ARE struggling a wee bit with the Glasgow accent - though it's still better than most - and I'm wondering if it's because you have some image of it as "tough" and spoken by tough guys. Why not listen to some nice old guys or women, or wee kids? (Women do live in Glasgow too!) That'd give you a sense of the actual sounds distinct from the emotional impression that's "infecting" this one.
The no-ending thing with vowels = having no off-glide / Y-glide
@jistaface Thanks for your comments, you're absolutely right about emotional effect. All my accents are based on what I've heard or seen on TV and Films or from friends so tend to be specific to that. If you know any good sources of a natural Glasgow accent I'd love to have a look!
@VoiceofJayBritton Getting material is tricky: Scots have always been taught our speech is wrong, ignorant and lazy. At the first hint of officialdom, talking to non-Scots or appearing on TV, we unconsciously switch registers. Footballers could be a good source: less need to talk "nice" watch?v=rG3ezQUodao&feature=relmfu
Ally McCoist (very young!) being interviewed. He starts with a "polite" TV-accent - but a north-Glasgow speedy/choppy delivery comes out as the ice breaks.
Accents in the "Sooside" (south side) They're a bit stilted (thatTV formality!) but the bloke describing the deaf-songs, and the woman in black holding the baby are speaking more normally. You can hear the longer, slower intonation.
@VoiceofJayBritton ("bookbug") might be quite good to go through - it's a parent/child project that goes around libraries around Scotland. You'll probably have "incomers" from other areas in each clip, but stay with the majority and you should get a good idea of maybe some accents you haven't heard befpre.
Just beware the kneejerk register-switch, the posh telephone-voice thing performed wherever microphones lurk!
@TheGhostfacekilla86 Actually if you're Hispanic, a Scottish accent would probably be the easiest one for you to attempt. A lot of Scots don't make a distinction between the vowels in the words "good" and "food" and you may not either. Also some of them might use an "r" sound that's quite similar to the "r" of "pero" or the "rr" of "perro" (the latter is not so common anymore though). Also your plosives ("b", "d", "g", "p", "t", "k") are quite similar to the way many Scots say them.
@TheGhostfacekilla86 I could go on and on. There's quite a few things in Spanish that could help you do a Scottish accent. I have a strong interest in linguistics so that's how I know these things. But yeah, you should try a Scottish accent :)
As someone from Edinburgh most of it's pretty damn accurate, some words like 'down' are too intonated though imo, like when i say down its more sharp and monotonic. My bitching aside though, good job my man
This was so authentic sounding (albeit to a Yank's ears). I have a number of Scottish friends and am exposed to their accent regularly. However, none of my friends or any Scot I've ever spoken with says "little wee" or "wee little" anything. Instead, they just use wee. In fact, I can't remember ever hearing a Scot use the word little at all. Just wee. :-)
Awesome! You sound exactly like a scottish friend of mine! From the not so soft speaking parts :P It's impossible to keep up with him :P
Looking forward to Irish! Could you please try Perigrín Tòk's accent from Lord of the Rings? Or is that Scottish? D: I believe he is supposed to be Irish.
@Muerdeful Thanks, always good to know when you get it right! Off the top my head I think Pippins accent was Southern Irish, I will be sure to throw a line or two into the video for you :-)
@you5450 Hi, thanks for your comment! I do have an Irish one in mind but it's quite hard as there is Northern Irish and Southern Irish to work in but it's definitely on the list!
