Syd was not concerned with sounding musical he was shooting for other shores - just listen to the "tonight we make love in london" three video YouTube - it shows he was more interested in event and intensity than being some hot-shot musician, sounds more than recognizable music - similar attitude to Ornette Coleman form the late 70s whereas Gilmour = just another good guitarist playing licks over chord changes
But there is something with Syd's playing that can not be covered by technically proficient guitarists, they are too concerned with 'music' to get the out of control tenuous and tenebrous tones and energy of his sound
Despite that i like alot Gilmour's usual sound and way of playing, and also like alot the sound of Telecaster , i find this sound very thin and weak. I wonder is it from the mixing guy or the fact that David seems to have the Tele on the bridge pickup...for some reason i feel a Tele sound is best with its neck pickup (full and juicy in the same time while keeping the primitive tin ring to it...)...wonder if anyone notices these
Dave played his guitar note for note and not forgetting syd into the bargain. Definately one of rocks gentlemen, and he could play guitar a little also lol
Best version of this song I've ever heard. Brilliant rendition by Gilmour. Does require numerous listens however, to really hear all of the subtle complexities of this piece and become more familiar with it's interesting structure. Once again, great piece!

Steve DiStanislao, he'd played with 'Crosby, Stills & Nash' where Gilmour noticed him. And took along for the whole 'On and Island' tour.
Nick appears in the documentary from the DVD, and has played "Wish You Were Here" and "Comfortably Numb" for an encore at the Royal Albert Hall. Unfortunately, those aren't included... Nick's decision, supposedly...
@gaofule u can unofficially call them 'Half Floyd' as two prominent writers continued to perform Pink Floyd music, and write in such style, until the sad departure of Wright in 2008. the Pink Floyd franchise may have been abandoned, and perhaps they symbolically could've called themselves Floyd, but i'll always see Floyd as a rather long-lasting band being that artistically they lived over a decade after dropping Mason. truly amazing artists
from the 60s to the 2000s dave still jams this.... he hated playin syds stuff too

Nice shot of Dave's picks at 00:05, I think he plays the pear shaped ones most of the time.

Even if David had a relatively blah lick-session, it'd still be gold. He can do no wrong on the guitar.

@KarmicOmen Syd was playing guitar before he met Dave. Dave taught him some licks. He didn't outright teach him how to play.

i think both of them are great players and you shouldn't compare them because they are different
... though if you really wanna play that game - on a technical level there is no way in heck that David could keep up
but they are different
Rory was always bending at the nut and using pinch harmonics and volume swells and all that
and david has some of the best most expressive bends ever
