My sister homeschooled her kids they used Sing, Spell, Read & Write. In College, my neice was at the top of her class. Direct, Systematic, Explicit phonics programs always work.
During the turn of the century when this stuff was being implemented, it was socialists like Emma Goldman who were calling these guys out for turning children into tools of industry. Just about everyone else thought it was a great idea
I homeschool my children, and I teach them phonics. My 5 year old can read at a 4th grade reading level. Of course, I think we tend to not expect our children to read well these days. Perhaps his reading ability would not seem so astounding if more children were taught phonics.
Another great video. Some of those quotes made me laugh in disbelief. However, the current illiteracy situation we are facing is far from humorous. It is frightening! Is anybody listening??
Thank You for posting this; you are absolutely right. Unfortunutely, this society makes a lot of money off of illiterate people. For example, In the US, the number of prisons that are built depends depends on the results of the third grade reading standardized exams. When a person does not read proficiently, he will have a difficult time finding a good job, which will lead to commiting crimes to survive. This is sad situation and hopefully this will change soon.
Thanks for comment. I've just put a comparison chart on my main site that shows clearly that Phonics wins the reading wars. Google: "37: Whole Word versus Phonics"
