They have same engine but the radias more voices, R3 is something like a little Radias but is not a Radias, te Radias is more complete but both have same sound engine.
Can the timbres be assigned to different midi channels? Could I theoretically have 4 midi controllers plugged into the rack, controlling each individual timbre? (or more usefully, 2 with a split on each)
Possibly... what you're describing is theoretically possible. It's just a matter of physically trying it. That's the thing about MIDI, you just gotta try it and dig in. But what you're saying makes complete sense to me. I wouldn't see why you couldn't assign the timbres to different channels...
the back panel on the R3 looks like beautiful brushed aluminum, but it's actually godawful painted plastic and looks dreadful (only complaint about either synths!)
