  • john paul jones is awesome but if u see him its hard to believe that he is a rock legend..he is not looking like other rock stars...

  • Wow, amazingly down to earth

  • is this the guy who sung "Do Wah Diddy"?

  • @fairyfellermaster lol so many acronyms

  • John Paul Jones is awesome

  • No disrespect to JP, RP or JB but JPJ is the one to listen to in interviews. He's probably my favorite LZ member.

  • Why is everyone talking about how JPJ is underrated. He's constantly recognize as not only a great bassist, but a musician, studio artist, and arranger all the time. Everyone knows the guy is great -- as well as Bonham and the rest. That is why Led Zeppelin rules, it was like 4 God's of music came together and rocked the world.

  • Imagine you're the guy who is selling a bass on ebay and its being bought by JPJ? Wow.

  • This man is so underrrated, most of people think Page and Plant are the creative guys on zeppelin, But I think this guy has the same or even more talent than page or plant

  • This man taught me how to play the bass guitar and he doesn't even know me :)

  • HE wrote all the riffs according to Jimmy....HE was the one who WROTE the riff to Black Dog!!!! This guy was the true genius of Led Zep...

  • Brilliant man

  • 0 dislikes for a reason

  • Often people give Keith Moon and John Bonham too much credit for the Who and Led Zeppelin but leave out John Entwistle and John Paul Jones. They still do the same thing today. I love the Drums,Percussion, and Rhythm Guitars along with the Orchestra but what does any Band or Group sound like without a very good natural talented Bass Player or after that Player Dies or leaves that Band or Group? Often the not so legendary Player who replaces them pales in comparison.

  • my favorite zeppelin songs are one is a big part of.@BBQFanNo1

  • in the back you can see that the guitar tuner is tuning to JPJ.

  • I saw him with Seasick Steve in Amsterdam last sunday... HONOURED!

  • JPJ I wanna hug you :)

  • i love you jpj talented blocke!!!!!!!!!!

  • I play saxophone :O

  • Well you should have taken up bass guitar! XD

  • i want to sell a guitar to someone like JPJ :d

  • guru...

  • The best musician in terms of talent....plays everything impeccably.

  • possibly the best person who has ever lived? i think yes.

  • JPJ is a MONSTER talent.

  • I've read all the Led Zeppelin biographies, and John Paul Jones is the one member who always comes off as a genuinely good guy.

  • what a fantastic guy and a brilliant musician

  • the tuner in the background attempting to tune his voice haha

  • @spudedovyick619 Hahaha lol I just noticed that now

  • If he was any more of a genius and prodigy, god would be obsolete.

  • All the instruments he arranged and played in Led Zeppelin made it what it was... I believe that all the members of Led Zeppelin created and where necesary to make the great and amazing music and band LEd Zeppelin where... It makes me feel sad that he was so underrated.... There are songs that without him would have never been songs!!!!

  • he's the secret sucess of Zeppelin, could someone say he made a bad performance? Always perfect. Thank you Jones

  • lol hes good, that has got to be the understatement of the century, lmao.

  • I actually didn't mind the Elixer strings product plug in this.

  • He's good but overrated

  • @PlainPie248 overrated ?? are you kidding ? do you know anything about music ?

  • @epa44 Actually yes I do considering I play 5 instruments. It's just the fact that all I've ever heard from my friends that don't play bass is how amazing he is. He is a very good bass player I guess it's just the fact that hearing people I know gloat about him constantly ruined it for me lol. I probably shouldn't have made that comment so unclear xD

  • @PlainPie248 and do to the fact that he's a good bass play, not amazing.

  • @PlainPie248 sod off he's one of the best and just because you play 5 instruments doesn't mean you've go a higher opinion on music, smug git

  • @identifymenot never said I do dumbass

  • @PlainPie248 it seemed that way, and don't go round critising musicians who will always be better than you he's in led zeppelin one of the best bands ever so until then you can say he good because your probably shit at all 5

  • @identifymenot Well I apologize for sounding that way. Obviously they are, it's fucking Led Zeppelin! No I am not :P Except trumpet lol. Anyways, to stop this, I am sorry :P

  • @PlainPie248 ok no hard feelings

  • I'm 13 and I love Led Zeppelin!!! and John paul Jones is my absolute favourite bass player of all time!!!

  • what a dynamic personality

  • he is one of the most underrated bassists

  • this man makes me proud to be a bass player

  • @ginseng1550 and his teeth make me proud to be a denist. HI-HOO!!!!!!!!!!! can I get a high five for that one?

  • @MasterxKenobi you're paid to work with teeth not make jokes... lets keep it that way please

  • @MasterxKenobi Hi Five buddy!!!

  • @MasterxKenobi what the hell is a denist?

  • what did robert plant do that made him an asshole? im confused

  • @pooplover6745 he didn't ask john to play with him in the 80's -2006

  • I think he might be my favorite guy of Zeppelin. Don't get me wrong, I love them all. I didn't always dig them that much. They're all so talented, but he is the unsung hero who happens to be a virtuoso (a.k.a. complete badazz). Plus he seems like really cool person.

  • @Kurtiz76 You are not alone.

But throughout Zeps history JPJ went out of his way to avoid publicity.

Even going so far as wearing wigs and disguises at gigs.

This allowed him to escape much of the "madness", but also reduced his perceived contribution.

People rightly rave about Bonham, but he had the best bass player to work off. They both made each other sound incredible, and they are both incredible musicians!.

  • What a class act

  • Hey folks! Does anyone know what kind of pick John Paul Jones uses on bass, if he uses anything in particular at all?

  • sounded like he said lamb of god

  • THANK GOD HE DIDNT LISTEN TO HIS DAD!!!

  • @movies4u27 well Dunn had a lot better gigs than the damned blues bros ! Booker T and Mgs , Doobie Bros...

  • He's a smart guy

  • you know it pains me to say this but, plant is a total asshole,i mean total

  • @roman14032 What makes Robert Plant a total asshole? He seems fairly amiable in most interviews I have seen, and I have not heard of any instances of untoward snarkiness towards the public.

  • @roman14032 I think that the relationship between the members of Led Zeppelin is totally their business and we don't have the right to judge any of them. They are, in a way, like the members of the same family: if you have an argument with your brother, that doesn't make you stop being siblings.

  • Im so gladddd he got that bass

  • he SHOULD'VE played the saxophone

imagine that, John Paul Jones.. saxophone extraordinaire..

  • Zeppelin wouldn't be complete without jpj or any other member. But I don't get why plant would make fun of one of the most talented musicians of all time. There would be no no quarter without him lol. Jpj will always be my favorite musician no matter what, he always set the mood for zep. Its a shame knowing that they disliked him. We love you jones!

  • @jeremyw5 Robert Plant isn't so musical himself... Hello, the only thing he does is sing! He just take credit for alot of the songs. Btw, No Quarter is one of Zeps best songs :)

  • @jeremyw5 wow, where'd you hear that?

  • i dont know why robert plant dislikes jones

  • dude could imagine packing up your bass and writing John Paul JOnes address on it!!!!

  • the most musically intelligent Zeppelin member.

  • Elixir's strings are really great. As JPJ said, they don't ever get sticky, unlike Earnie Ball. The problem about Earnie Ball in my opinion is that if you don't play your guitar for 2-3 days, your strings get "dry" and rusty. Elixir, on the other way, don't ever get rusty or dry and they keep the tone really well, but they tend to break easier.

  • john paul jones tried to be the best on an organ because his dad was an intimidating pianist. A sentence ripe for innuendo. :)

PS love JPJ, zooma and thunderthief are, in my opinion, the best of the post-zeppelin albums

  • do you think if we find the holy grail of musical creativity upon this earth, we could protect it? i need a trinity of protection and god's will appears: bass & drums a former comment: If I am an istrument..........can you figure out how to play me? there all inn here we just have to let them out.

  • i am all yours and yours and yours, and no one elses, what if you guys had a holy relic to mold/create and pckg to forward the kingdom to come, what do you think you could come up with, a large shield, a large sword, and a word.......love, i surrender, wind me up, turn me on, switch me off and keep me hidden from everything outside of god: surround me with your artistry and i will never want to be anywhere outside of there, according to your wishes, in everything and in everyway exclusively zeps

  • @lionesswest the key is getting all three of you in agreement, i will want to learn the instruments minimal complexities am able influences undisciplined but will give it a shot......willing to listen: stow me away on your ship of love........pls.

  • he's really really intelligent. i wanna smoke bud with him

  • Outstanding interview. Thanks for posting this.

  • zep would have never happened without this truly gifted man...all of the mandolin, and organ work...was all john paul. not jimmy page. people are really starting to realize this..

john paul was more than just the bass player....john paul is the defining studio musician..he was the brain child behind the mic set up for "when the levee breaks". bonham was able to do that because of john paul..this man does not get enough credit. he should get it from plant and page first...

  • @sleeplessingc

    intelligent people know this....

he worked PERFECT with Bonzo´s drums! He´s a genius!

  • Comment removed

  • Without JPJ, Zeppelin would have been average. He was a giant with Bonham in the rhythm department, great talented musician.

  • he looks really nice

  • @ixcreme not sure but i wouldn't be surprised if he's lived a fairly "healthy" life (from a rockstar perspective, of course). he was fairly mature when he became a star, was a pro musician with the seriousness and professionalism that comes with that, etc. and i'm pretty sure he was married throughout the zeppelin years. and living a healthy life affects your appearance. not sure hendrix would've looked too great if he'd have been alive today.

  • @mandolinroad i meant he seems like a nice guy, humble and stuff....

  • @ixcreme yeah totally, me too.

  • I wonder if he told the guy on eBay that it was JPJ buying his bass lol

  • Is this the same guy that did Man from Nazareth back in 1970 ?

  • I really like how he endorses Elixir Strings... He's very honest, he's not "sucking up", you can really tell he genuinely likes the strings. Amazing guy.

  • you find inspiration in music form life as much as from talent watched a friend write a song from a noise maid dropping a box of stuff he heard a beat didn't pic it up he wrote it down

  • He is such a humble person! You just fall in love with him.

  • a very under-rated guy. no doubt

  • Amen!!!

  • Happy Birthday to John Paul Jones

  • Shaped me as a bass player & to know he played and arranged all of the strings is baffling alone not to mention all the organ work. In my opinion JPJ is the most under rated rock musician of ALL TIME!!! And so unassuming!

Take the strings out of the intro to Stairway & it probably changes everything about the song melodically & harmonically....nuff said!

  • "Son, don't take up bass guitar"?

If there's one instrument we need more people playing, it has to be bass.

  • I so admire John Paul Jones, he is an everyman`s musician, I respect everything that he has done, I love the story about his dad (and watch his left hand) Thank you John.

  • he is so cool, no ego, so unpretenscious, and a monster musician,,,a true legend..

  • the coolest guy of all time! so underrated!!!!! i love him very much!

  • led zeppelin's rock of gibraltar. pure genius

  • Comment removed

  • One of the most underrated rock musicians of all time!!!

  • @bassdman85 im not sure how he is underrated. he is usually placed pretty high

  • He is my influense. JPJ u legend 4ever

  • Holy crap. I love JPJ. I wanted to play bass when I was 15 and my dad thought bass guitars were useless. Also, I never took lessons. :P

  • if someone, say "not" well versed in their "who's who" Rockstar History, saw this gentlemen on the street, perhaps ME, i swear, i would think it's just some "old Granpa' lookin' guy. what a trip. to see perhaps one of the most famous bass players EVER, in Rock, looking so much older, unassuming, non-descript, and anonymous. blown away. don't get me wrong, "Total Respect" here. just that i'm a little shocked, having NOT seen this guy in a while, and here he is looking quite old.

  • my hero

  • j paul jones was the backbone of zepellinhe gave shape to the most famous zepellin songs he was alwaays shy he hates interviws and the spotlight the greatness of this guy is his humbleness

  • John looks great with that hairstyle.

  • I like these guys so much better than when they were famous. Granted, that's when they made there best music, but they're so much more genuine now.

  • Hilarious, his back and forth w/his pop

  • He is so Freaking Awesome, he is the definition of Awesome!!

  • what an inspirational musician and thoroughly nice chap - still proving that he's got it.

  • Does he have calluses on his calluses?

  • jpj is one of the best musicians out there....i have so much respect for this guy.

  • This man...is... to awesome for words. Oh, I feel I need to say this, I can't stand Elixirs. Two weeks and the damn things start peeling. Also, I don't like paying $50 for a set of strings. I like Rotosounds better. There, rant over. Carry on everyone. :)

  • Is it just me or does he still look incredibly young?

  • @TheEducatedPenguin He looks young for his age (64), he looks like in his late 40s/early 50s

  • I've adored JPJ for nigh on 30 years now, but seeing him in this interview he reminds me at times of Steve Buscemi.

  • JPJ and Entwistle. it doesnt get any better

  • @dartvader117 Add Chris Squire.

  • Robert Plant is cool Jimmy Page is as well, and Bonzo. BUT. Without John Paul Jones, there is no Led Zeppelin. No Bassist can be this versatile and as key as he was. Without Bonzo and JPJ, Led Zeppelin should not do anything. They can do like, Page and Plant, but do not call it Led Zeppelin. Anyways, this man is purely a genius. He was meant for music. And he STILL rocks!!! I have seen him live with Them Crooked Vultures Soo many times now.

  • If you look up class in the dictionary they should just have JPJ picture.

  • He always comes across as a really lovely bloke. Very witty too. Outstanding musician obviously without an ounce of pretentiousness or arrogance. Pure class.

  • Does anybody else notice that the tuner is still on behind him? Hahahah that's funny.

  • Even if he couldn't play music for shit he would still be famous for being so goddamn classy. True story.

  • I love you John. You look great. : )

I like the Diamanda Galas "Sporting Life" cd you did with her. Excellent.

  • An absolute legend of Rock music!

  • Talanted player with alot of class...

  • Watch my left hand...*fap fap fap fap*.

  • "Ah, tour dates........this is tomorrow!"

    :)

  • the man played three instruments, and never got much notice. he is a awesome musican.

  • It's about time somebody interviewed him. Never got the credit he deserved.

  • Ya but Elixir does not make 8 string sets..... Too bad, I got an Alembic dying for a set...

  • You are flat, mister Jones... except at 1:44 then you're sharp

  • @AhhThatGuy I meant to give you a thumbs up but I miscalculated my click and gave you a thumbs down. Now I feel like a douche.

  • @redvsbluefanman ha thats fine man, thanks for telling me:)

  • Ha thats sweet that one of his influences was Duck Dunn (a Blues Brother fyi).

  • true living legend of rock.

  • is that a neve back there? if so what model?

  • If elixirs are so good, why is he endorsing rotosound strings in june 2010 edition of bass player magazine (pge 54)?

  • @leroydiamond Because he uses both; John is a long-time Rotosound player that uses Elixir Strings on his 4- and 5-strings and Rotosound on his more exotic basses using unique gauges.

  • @ElixirStringsMedia exactly. he uses 8 string basses a lot and he uses Rotosound LD99 Piano Strings to get a more high tone. They he uses good ol' Elixir to get that nice bass tone.

  • @leroydiamond i like play the guitar... but JPJ in my opinion one of the best musician of the history of the music... im serious.

  • @leroydiamond : B/C HE CAN....

  • Zep was all about JPJ & Bonham. Not to take away from Page & Plant, but they were such a drum & bass band. Funky Brits!

  • @casca520 yeah thats why every had an extended bass and/or drum solo live! or was that guitar... oh yeah.

  • Jones was probably the most musically accomplished member of Zep. He had the most training

  • You prove your dad wrong JPJ, said bass is the worst of em all, and you turned out to be one of the best to ever live.

  • @Videogamer2257 lol maybe the best.

  • 5:22 a shadow... whom it might be... anyway JPJ is a real musician he knows a lot about music he plays the bass really good and the organ as well.. long live JPJ

  • Living Legend

  • just to hear his voice, and knowing he played, with the most legendary rock band of the world is like magic..... it feels, like hearing the voice of a god, a god or Rock N Roll.... Led Zeppelin are my heroes....

  • according to the tuner in the background....he talks in Dmaj......most commonly anyway

  • @SleepingInTheFire He hit an A major at 4:46

  • @BigAussieBloke69 Amaj is in the Key of Dmaj....

  • @SleepingInTheFire I know, I meant that it was perfect for about three quarters of a second.

  • i bet the guy who sold John Paul Jones that bass on eBay would flip shit if he were to watch this interview.

  • @taylor317 lmao

  • im glad he didnt listen to his dad and still picked up the bass guitar.

  • all the guys in zep get more handsome with age!

  • He is a sage.

  • Jonesy's a genius!! For some reason, I think he's kind of adorable...

  • JPJ is just a complete legend in every single way.

  • lol pianist.

  • JPJ never met an instrument he could not play.

  • @ndb1971 Drums.

  • @ndb1971 cept the sax

  • i thought it was stupid how they asked abut the strings. i hate when componys do that
