  • Way to go! That Plymouth ny way you look at it,got smoked. The GN won!

  • I like GN's but the PlymoUth hardly got smoked

  • The almighty GN does it again... Wow that was impressive..

  • I bet if we put the PLYMOUTH and GRANDNAtional on the scale everybody would be shocked at the readings . I would not be suprised if that GN was heavier then that PLYMOUTH old MOPARS were not as heavy as everybody makes them out to be.

I bet the weight is any more either way then a couple hundred pounds, so throw a 250lb women in the passenger seat of the BUICK and the results would of still been the same. It's just hard for people to except the fact a v6 could be so DAM fast.

  • 86 and 87 were not the same power ratings 86 was 235 hp and 87 was 245 hp.

  • I had an 86 and my friend had an 87 my 86 was always faster both cars were bone stock. As we modified them mine always was ahead by a good margin never could figure out why, 87 was suppost to be around 10-15 more hp. Back in the early 90's

everyone knew the grandnational and just expected it to always win. You had to launch just right too much boost you lit the tires not enough you bogged but could usually easily catch up and pass 5.0's and vettes of that time.

  • @TheHorefrost 86 and 87 were the exact same car 245 h.power both instances.you would not easily pass vettes and 5.0 s theG.N. was dead slow once it wamed up.On an average run the vette was faster but when very cold the grand national was as fast as a vette. Most were low 14 second cars with some rare examples going high 13s However once chipped and with drag radials solid 13 second cars.

  • remember its a v6 gentlemen

  • umm it didn't "smoke" it. that 5000 Lb Plymouth was right on its ass, lol! You forget that plymouth is twice the weight of that buick, put that 474 in another GNX and the GNX will run home to mama crying!

  • My GN is 3750lbs. The only GNs that I know of that are 2500lbs, are pure strip cars. Which run low 7s in the 1/4. If that GN was 2500lbs, trust me it would've kicked that Plymouth's ass even more. I'm not sure if 474 is the displacement in the Plymouth, but if it is there is the factor of 2 you are trying to come up with.

FYI, don't know why you are calling that a GNX. It is not a GNX. GNX are very rare and most people that own them, wouldn't bother taking them to the strip.

  • Sorry, I'm not trying to be synnical, I do really like GN's very much. What I meant was, if that motor in the plymouth was stuffed in another GN like yours, it would win, thats all I'm saying, cause your GN won against it by a VERY thin margin, less than one tenth of a second difference, still impressive. I had wanted to get a GN since my brother had one that he wired the wastegate open and was close to 500 HP stock. my brothers was a GNX, and that is why I assumed they were all GNX's.

  • Do you recall what number his GNX is/was? They were only 547 made, all in 87. The regular production GN was the base for the GNX.

Remember though, there is always an increased risk with running boost. My daughter must have switched off my alky injection controller and running 24lbs of boost and that is all she wrote. A couple of pistons, rods, the crank and main bearings were destroyed. Detonation is some serious shit!

  • @ChuckTruck78 Keep on deaming my boy .A GNX was 300 h.p stock and opening the wastegate did not raise it anywhere near 500 h.p I also doubt very much your brother had a GNX as they were very very rare cars.

  • @camirocz LOL! Ok, look, I know my life and what happened in my life. I have 5 brothers and between them and my father, I was witness to many factory Hot Rods from a GNX, SD-455 Trans Am, Demon 340, Challenger 440 six pack, 67 Barracuda 426 hemi, 69 Caddy 472, 59 Chrysler 300 413 dual 4bbl, 67 Corvette L88, 69 Camaro ZL1, 70 Chevelle LS6, My 3rd oldest brother is the one who was the Buick/Pontiac Fan and he IN FACT had a GNX that he tuned and raced, a few simple mods and he was pushing 470+HP.

  • @ChuckTruck78 Do you know how many L88 67 vettes were produced?Do you know how many zl1 camaros were produced? There were 2 camaros made with the zl1 in 1969 and you claim you guys had one of them? The L88 vettes were rare as hell but of course you guys had one of those as well and of the 500 GNX cars produced ....you know what i m getting at.....Keep on dreaming my friend.

  • @camirocz YES, there were 20 Vettes in 67 with the L88 and my dad had one of them. Do you know how many 1959 Chrysler 300 413 dual 4 bbls there were?? there were MORE than 2 ZL1 Camaros as the ZL1 was offered from 67, 68 & 69. You know nothing about me, so who is the one dreaming? I am done playing your cat and mouse game, pal!

  • my friend just rebuilt a motor for his v6 turbo grand national it sounds so badass to be a V6 almost sounds like a v8

  • yeahh red neck drags 07'

  • The sound of that GN's turbo spooling up warms my little heart.

  • i know exactly what u mean. i cant get enough of that sound lol like an orgasm to the ears

  • 3.6 really??? thought it was 4.7??? ahh well still a beast

  • Actually that's a 3.8 Turbo in the Buick, they bumped it when they added it to the Chevy and CMC trucks. This vid should have said 747 vs. 474 'cause that turbo sounds like Buick used a jet engine as a turbo.

  • not supercharger but turbo charged

  • I love Both, especially that 67 Plymouth never see them really.

  • man that was fast. which car had the super charger? i know i heard it.

  • grand nationals are turbocharged, its not blower wine its turbo spool :p

  • that's too crazy. these cars are severely underrated! is the turbocharger come standard or is it a mod? if i remember correctly, the GN's have a 0-60 in the 3.6 sec range?

  • they come stock turbocharged, idk what their 0-60 is tho.

  • 0-60 in 3.6s??? No, there was a range in the 86/87 of like 5.3s to 6.0s. From car to car, they were not consistent and also traction and outside air temperature played a part.

The GNX was 4.6s, primarily due to the upgraded suspension.

  • innerJAG the turbo was a standard option but this car may have an aftermarket one.....and yes the GNs did have a time right there

  • I would like to see a Syclone vs. a Grand National I'm willing to bet it would be one hell of a show :) prferably both being stock no tricks.

  • Why not add the 89 TA 20th Anniversary and GMC Typhoon to the show too?

  • Yes that 3-way would be a great run. I would love to have that race, but my GN's not stock ;P

  • Hell yeah thats right NEVER underestimate a gn uless it doesnt have an engine lol

  • of course the buick whens becasue plymouth are heavy framed cars i wouldnt use a plymouth as a dragcar ever maybe a gorgous show car ya but not a dragcar

  • Man I love this car. However, I put all the extra money I have into it and STILL I'm chasing down an electrical gremblin! I thought about selling and trading but I just can't let her go.

  • Many GNs push over 20lbs of boost. It is all in the tune and setup. Mine has aluminum heads, a front mount, and propane injection and it is set at 24lbs for street usage...

  • That's the coolest thing about turbos is that you can easly change the boost and change it from an 8 second beast to a street drivable car.

  • All the import lovers think american cars are crap. they need a turbo to do anything, and when they do, they think they are untoutchable. that's when you can throw the GN in their faces.

  • LOL!

lawnchairs next to the track...times posted on a flatbed truck...classic!

I guess that track isn't NHRA sanctioned.

    Nice Buick.

  • The race is in Sweden in a tiny town with only 140k. inhabitents on a tiny airsportfield, so.. you are correct, not NHRA sanctioned! ;-)

  • hrm.. sorry.. what year is the GN? dont think these buick v6's can do 20psi without blowin. 9 stock, 12 intercooled. performance modded 16/17? gotta keep your motor safe

  • GN's stock are like 16-18 PSI... it's a GM thing, you wouldn't understand.

  • ahh i built up an early '80s GN block with '87 heads, 4.1 intake, 4-barrel.. got it in my MC right now... not turbocharged.. so im not sure about the turbocharging specifics...

  • 20 psi on a stock motor is very do-able, as long as the fuel system can support. Its all in the tune~!!!

  • Very true!

I've seen people take them up to 42 psi before, of course not on the stock drivetrain :P

  • how did the GN beat a 6-pak?!!??

  • With a turbo and a pressure at 20 psi it makes the tiny V6 a 545 cubic engine, like magic! ;-)

And..... it doesn't have a sixpack, only 1 hole where the air comes through... no magic at all... new car is in progress and one more StageII engine on the way over here....

  • that plymoth got spanked

  • my 99 bonneville can take all yalls shit lol

  • people will never learn, YOU CAN'T BEAT A GNX!

  • That's not a GNX...That's a Regular GN, which there's nothing wrong with a regular GN. I'd take one in a heartbeat.

  • GNX means grand national...as far as i know, ah well.

  • No, GNX is a McClaren company that took 547 Grand Nationals, and customized them for performance, and looks wise.

  • really? wow...so there's a better GN then a regualr GN thats like..Gods god or something:p hahah. Thanks for the info dude. I thought people used the 'slang' GNX like the old Buick GSX, all though that car was called GSX an dthe GNX only ment Grand National but people threw in the X to be..cool? *shrugs* hahah

  • Please.... go to a track. They win and lose all the time. I'm sure that 1700HP street legal Twin Turbo Viper that ran a 7 in the quarter on utube would eat it for lunch.

  • Oh yeah, I also forgot... That was a nice race, good job GN. Although, you better hope your garage buddy never learns from you and attaches an artificial lung to his monster engine. If he does and with very little boost needed (6 -8 pounds), you'll only see tailights.

  • Mike, hate to break it for you, but in Street Outlaw, there's a streetlegal 2000hp 6.6 second Buick GN running. With a twinturbo V6.

  • dude you ever heard of stoking and boring. 474 isn't difficult to achieve. while i agree is it an odd displacement its not unlikely!!

by the way VERY nice GN!!

  • oh i know thats where the 502 came from, the chevy 383 stoker, .30 over with a 400SB crank;) and tons of others. Im guessin ghte 474 is the 426 .60 over ish? with some rod work *stoking* man that sounds gay. Anyhow, great car, both, specially the GN.

  • lol yeah i mean stroking lol sory bout that err lol

  • doh, lousey lack of typing skills, pobodies nerfect. Ok,,,that was lame of me.

  • lol...

  • What the hell is a 474 plymoth?

  • 474 inch cubics of a big V8 engine with 6 barrels

  • I've owned a 60's Plymouth for about 24 years, worked on it ever since. Plymouth never made a 474 cu in engine.. is why I asked. The biggest engine they ever pushed out the door was a few 440s that were over-bored .030 at the factory for a few more hp. Which added about 8 cubic inches (guessing). Also, the three two bbl carb setup was called a sixpack.

  • It's a stroker engine with roller things inside, i know what sixpack is, just wrote little wrong. We share the same garage.

  • Yes, we do. :) Congrads on winning. Looks like a close race.
