the murals went up after the wall came down. and only on the east side i think. maybe because the wall was blocking the east berliners from west. i don't know. good question though.
The East Side Gallery was an art project, and various young artists were commissioned. It's the world's longest open-air art exhibition (about a mile or so). It also has protected status, but over the years the weather and graffiti have taken their toll.
The east side faces the road and so is visible to the passing public, while the west side faces the river. Because the wall followed the river at this point, this was the perfect place for the gallery: no roads were being blocked.
Next time you're in California do a stand at the Wall in San Diego, it's not as famous as Berlin's, but it's growing and more deadly per year than all 28 years of the Berlin wall.
Of course the San Diego wall is keeping people OUT rather than IN. Our economy needs those people though since not a lot of our "legal" citizens want to do most of those jobs. This is not a simple issue that people often try to simplify.
oh...your pants and socks! the fold and roll! dammit ira, you've inspired me again! i'm gonna fold and roll my jeans right now and pull my socks over the top...
i've been waiting for this to come back into fashion for years now;-)
what do you mean how do i know about the baglery, i'm a california girl who spent a good chunk of my life going beach to beach with my surfer boyfriend. our good friends had a big house in s.c. they used as a dojo...so we spent lots and lots of weekends there. i used to eat at the bagelry every morning and at some burrito shack downtown every night. those dojo kids were crazy...seems like another life now...but i still go to the bagelry when i'm in town
