Direct mode shoots the missile arcing towards the target.

Top mode makes the missile climb and then drop on top of the target, which is useful against armored vehicles. They are typically heavily armored only on the sides, leaving the top relatively vulnerable. Plus there's the kinetic energy from the drop, which also helps.

In Call of Duty they were always set on Top mode.
