@handsewwantabe Great Question. I spend a lot of time on the issue of the under finger in my Hand Quilting Class. The underneath finger manages and stays in contact with the point of the needle. During "first position" pressure is applied up from underneath with that finger, making a little fabric mountain.. Keep the pressure consistent between the under finger and the thimble until you let go for the briefest moment to actually take the stitch.
@ricolet1 There are many excellent award winning hand quilters who quilt without a hoop. I personally find it easier and more manageable to quilt WITH a hoop. So that's how I teach hand quilting.
Thanks for your great feedback! The function of the quilting is to hold the quit layers together, so yes the stitches should definitely be seen from the backside and go through all the layers.
Great video! I'm a beginner quilter. I was wondering...when you hand-quilt, should the stitches go through all three layers of the quilt sandwich and show on the backing or should I only stitch through the top layer? Thank you!
this was great .. i have never tried to hand quilt because i didnt think i could . i tryed this and it worked good for me thank you for shareing Barbara
excellent video when watching the women hand stich their quilts they are so fast and professional you cant see what they have done, where do you get that leather thimble?

Please, what is the hand below the hoop doing? Does one finger apply pressure to the material? Not one tutorial I have watched addressed this
Thank you

To say you can't hand quilt without a hoop is utter nonsense.

:O Wow! I want to make my own now. Especially since my comforter has holes in it maybe I can make a quilt before it dies.

Thank you so much! It's been years since I've quilted, and I forgot about returning to first position. I'm so glad you have this on YouTube.
