Freedom Riders are true American heroes just as much as our Armed Forces heroes. The Armed Forces fights evil abroad- the Freedom Riders fought evil on our own soil.
Take a journey into the future. Occupy today! OccupyWallStreet. Your brothers and sisters are in need of Freedom. In the south they are trying to bring back segregation. Police are beating up peaceful protesters in Oakland, New York, Atlanta, San Diego, Brazil, London, Melbourne, yes this is global. Racism, inequality, discrimination, poverty, slavery are all still very real problem's in today's world. United in solidarity with the 99%.
perfect example no matter how smart we are. we still have animal instic. savages and very easy to influence. this whole country was build by terror, murder, rape, etc etc. racist is still alive and well in the good old USA. we still have a lot of work to do and flush out the goverment hypocrites that still could hurt this country.
@KislotaOo don't forget white people died for desegregation. goodman and schwerner, viola liuzzo, and an episcopal priest, who's name i've forgotten come to mind.
public plea for help! widowed father ,not native to vermont ,finds apathy and discrimination, civil rights violations but ,,,no forum,,, i need lawyer who not afraid of reprisal
@boricuamovement but because of all these trials and tribulations, America has been slowly earning the title of "Land of Freedom." That title doesn't come with the Declaration of Independence. It is something to be nationally earned.
i still don't understand, what did the freedom riders want from this. Segergated interstate buses were already illegal, what did they want to gain. this isn't a retorical question i really need this for an assigment.
they wanted to force the federal government to enforce it since the state governments were not. also, they wanted publicity, to publicly shame southern politicians and law enforcement.
@Cake6595 Yes segregated buses were illegal, but it was not being enforced. It was constantly disregarded, and the buses remained segregated. They wanted to gain equality for all, for everyone to be able to ride the buses with respect and dignity. Thank God they were successful. We all owe them an enormous debt of gratitude.
This is very inspiring part of history, but also an unfortunate one. The fact that the colour of a person's skin could make a difference whether person "deserved" to live or die is scary. It is amazing to me that even now there are people who have strong racist tendancies. There are a lot of people that I dislike because of their personalities or actions. But to truly hate someone because of the way they look is beyond my understanding. It proves that ignorance still exists today. That is sad.

God was like, 'these people must not die, and after 50 years when they grow old, they will be talking on how bad the white men acted!'

God Bless the Freedom Riders. They didn't have to do what they did. They are just as strong as Dr. King and his men.

Does anyone recognize these lyrics? It sounds like it's about the Freedom Ride
It was the twentieth day when they all took a ride. Who would've thought that'd be the day died? They're all heroes.

The song is "The Ballad of the Student Sit-Ins" sung by Guy Carawan. We recorded it live at Fisk University the day before the Freedom Ride.
