  • The idea that postmodernism has nothing to offer in any areas of critical thought is pretty absurd. Sure the extreme view that there is no objective reality is not exactly strong in its logical foundation. But your rejection of it lacks even a single layer of critical thought.

The idea of things we tend to perceive as being socially constructed is not only appealing (as a partial account of knowledge), it's observable.

You simply attempt to reduce it to hippie plight which is...well dumb.

  • The best thing about this video...you don't produce an actual argument. Instead there's just the half baked analogy. It sounds as though you don't really fully understand postmodernism. Yes, I know you are chuckling to hear that. I get it. Nevertheless, your only position is that postmodernism = debauchery.

You cannot possibly reduce the whole of postmodernist thought to this if you actually understand it.

  • @pleasereason Postmodernism isn't debauchery, but it leads to it. Other things lead to it too. This bogus philosophy will accelerate the decline of our civilization. Look at the lives of its principle adherents, Ideas have consequences.

  • @alyosha24601 I'm not really sure you even know what postmodernism is. Let me guess. You are a Christian who has never actually challenged your own beliefs, and your idea of morality comes from a 2000 year old book, that uses circular reasoning to justify itself.

Now I certainly find SOME parts of PM to be stupid. Sure there is objective truth. But the notions that many 'truths' are socially constructed, is actually empirically observable (which is a bit funny but true nonetheless)

  • @alyosha24601 The thing is, even in your reply, YOU HAVEN'T GIVEN A PHILOSPHICAL REASON TO REJECT POSTMODERNISM. You may think you have because you find the emperor's clothes analogy to be clever (but only because you don't actually get why it's a bad analogy). But, alas, you haven't.

So seriously let's hear it. What makes all postmodern thought untrue? All you do is make claim after claim. You have literally given 0 support for your opinion. I'd love to hear some

    Hint: Bible doesn't count.

  • @alyosha24601 "Look at the lives of its principle adherents, Ideas have consequences."

Great point. Look at the lives of the Christian Crusaders. Look at the lives of priests that rape little boys. Are they evidence that Christianity leads to debauchery? No. See where I'm going with this?

The life of a postmodernist, good or bad, has no relevance to postmodernism itself. What you are doing is using a tool of deception to assure yourself that your ignorant beliefs are true.

  • @alyosha24601 What you are doing is something that almost all Christians do. You are seeking out reasons to perpetuate your beliefs. Deep in the back of your mind, you know that a lot of the things you believe are stupid, but you are afraid to reject them. This is how religion traps ppl and keeps them from thinking. I know it because it happened to me, and ever free minded former Christian I know. You are no exception. Try thinking for yourself for a change.

  • @pleasereason So, I have drawn different conclusions than you have, so that makes me a stupid coward? And now I am trapped and can't think. I see. Truth is I want to be trapped. I grew up in an drunken home. My life was a total mess. Now I have six happy kids, a loyal wife, stability, and a hope for the future. I'm happy. I hope you use your "freedom" well. By the way, I've seen three miracles with my own eyes; it's a bit difficult to go back and become a "free thinker". Good luck to you.

  • @alyosha24601 Wow. So is this what you always do when someone challenges your beliefs? You just plug your ears and say "Yeah well I'm happy."

I'm glad you are happy. I really am. But it has nothing to do with the subject we are talking about, AT ALL. You are ignoring the issue at hand because you don't have a response, and if you acknowledged that you would have to change your mind.

You are being a fool even by the Bible's definition.

  • @alyosha24601 And BTW anyone can consider a chance event a miracle. That doesn't mean it is one. I've had out of body experiences/near death experience. I know that there is something more than the physical body.

But unless you are a mindless dumbass, the belief in a creator or afterlife has no philosophical bearing on logic.

You asked if you are a stupid coward for your beliefs? No. But you are stupid for shutting out any ideas that make you uncomfortable. or at least weak-minded

  • @pleasereason Hopefully God will find you to be as logical, courageous, intelligent, and open-minded as you believe yourself to be. As for me, I know I am a big mess and that I need help. I have experienced God provide this in the past in the most miraculous of ways. As he says, "thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes." (Mt. 11:25). I consider myself fortunate to be what you call a "fool".

  • @alyosha24601 Wow. I didn't think you would be this dense. You just plug your ears and sing LA LA LA over everything I say, because you know I am right.

I haven't described myself as these things. I have described your religion as perpetuating the opposite of these things.

You keep making this about who's better than who and it's not about that at all. It's about truth, and you are running away from the truth as fast as you can. This much is obvious.

  • @alyosha24601 And again, you say God has helped you, but you don't actually know that. You just have faith in it. There is a difference between knowledge and belief. And again, your belief in God is not what I'm attacking.

As I've said, you can believe in God without rejecting these ideas just because your preacher told you to. Why are you so defensive against this notion? What makes you so afraid of it that you won't even respond to the ideas I put forward?

  • @alyosha24601 Are you ever going to answer any of my questions? Why are you so afraid of the idea of post modernism? Why are you so afraid of the Theory of Evolution? There is no evidence that suggests either to be untrue. If there were you would be able to respond to my objections, but you haven't even tried.

  • @alyosha24601 It is physically impossible to have evidence of God's existence. We cannot know whether he is real or not. Even Christians acknowledge this. That is why faith is so important, because it can't be proven. Even you can't argue against this. It is a fundamental teaching of Christianity.

At the same time, you want to deny evolution by showing a lack of evidence. However, there is always at least SOME evidence.

So in the end, it is still more reasonable to accept evolution than God.

  • @alyosha24601 Again I'm going to give you this challenge. (When you ignore it b/c you know you have no answer, it will the the THIRD time you have failed to support your beliefs.)

    1) Tell me why exactly postmodernism in its entirety is false.

    2) Tell me how you know the Bible is accurate whenever God himself says men are flawed, and the Bible was composed by men.

    3) How do you account for the fact that early Christians knew they were pagans who practiced a version of Sun God worship?

  • @pleasereason Prove to me that all moral truth is objective, and do it in an objective and empirical way. Your account must be independent of religlous beliefs or else you are proving yourself wrong.

You yourself are a living testament to how accurate some postmodern notions are. I'm willing to be you got this analogy from a preacher or some moronic Christian apologetic whose views you've never challenged but just blindly accepted.

  • Thank you for this. The only video I've found on youtube critical of post-modernism. Thankfully, I've had prior warning, and started with the classics first, but too many have not. If I have any goal in life, it is to chip away at the foundation of post-modernism.

  • @BerserkExodus1 Hooray for you! I'm so happy you don't like that wacky thinking either! It has emasculated our whole culture. Have a look at "Understanding the Times: The Collision of Today's Competing Worldviews" by David A. Noebel, he influenced me a lot. He's a Christian but does a great job of debunking the postmodern contradictions. And take heart, there are other scholars who take it apart. Alister McGrath is another. Their bibliographies should be full of goodies.

  • Ha, he, hi, ho, huh.

  • @xjxm Thank you for your profound comment. I hope you enjoyed the history of Postmodernism's impact on Western Civilization and are now prepared to oppose your nutty college profs.

  • @alyosha24601 Most definately.

  • When your prof parrots "There is no truth", I give you full permission to laugh loudly! I laugh too - you're actually paying for a lecture like that! Ha ha ha ha, funny !
