Purchase veges? Does anyone commenting know of the CA water crisis? Water being submitted to farmers despite the need for its relevance regarding smelt? As you eat your veggies, think of the salmon and other mammals which need smelt to dine. Human ignorance on the matter is so overwhelming. Regard what you see, not what you don't. Out of site, out of mind. People amaze me, then again, they do not. Solve the problems, don't extinct the methods.

comm. harvest of spec. trout in NC, 200,000 lbs annually, recorded rec. harvest , 900,000 lbs annually, rec harvest is thought to be triple this recorded figure, yet comm. fisherman are being shut down on this specie, go figure ! OVERFISHING BY WHOM ?

Pothila, im glad you mentioned pollution which is a major factor in fish population as well. Here in NC, USA we will never be allowed to harvest river herring ever again, shut down for good due to polluted rivers where the fish spawn. Plenty of herrings show up, but polluted water deters spawning !

There are many ways to contribute to fish population recovery. Was funny, salmon was mentioned. What about the salmon water being used for crops in CA, rather than for the salmon ?

Laws on species, which make fisherman discard many species to obtain the specie they can keep and sell. Imported seafood ! Seafood caught oversees where no laws are implemented to control fish populations. If you buy imported, you contribute to overfishing.

No. You can buy sustainably sourced fish like tilapia, carp or Marine Stewardship Certified pole and line caught tuna/salmon. You can also eat smaller fish like anchovies and herrings and avoid large tuna or shark. Just be more discriminating.

People can not calculate. They tend to think they're alone on the planet. 1 kg of fish for every person per year means 6 million tons each year. The ocean does not produce more output as it needs for its own sustainability. Whatever we take out of it will change the ocean life. Soon we will face an ocean filled with jelly-fish and nothing else. And a few years later, the ocean will become a poisonous sulfur-environment. Dead for thousands of years.

Pollution of the sea is a problem. Plastic waste is killing sea birds that swallow it. I eat fish and I would like people to enjoy sushi and sashimi in the future. That's why we have to protect parts of our oceans and manage fish rather than treating the sea like a dinner plate full of food for us to finish.

Basically we do not need to eat fish. It's not our demand, its the money one can gain by fishing on a large scale, the marketing and our unawareness of the hidden process behind the curtain.

Yes, it is a dire situation. If you read the book "Collapse" by Jared Diamond, some civilizations died off because the exhausted their fish supplies... now the threat is on a world-wide level. There are bigger questions of what population the planet can conserve on a stable basis ("sustainable"). These questions need thought, and action.
